Benjimen, where did you read that Hollywood is forcing 321 Studios to give over the names of anyone who purchased their software? I've been keeping up with the case and reading most information about it, so perhaps I overlooked this tidbit of information that you have. Please provide a source so we can see this for ourselves. As for the "technology" to copy a dvd to 4 or 5 cd-r's, aren't we all a little over the vcd thing? Personally I'd rather go back to the stone age of betamax than to have to swap 4 or 5 discs to watch a single movie.

Ok, listen, my wife works for the local newspaper and my best friend also works for the newspaper and they print USA Today over there also, so I have all kinds of news coming into me every day. Just read the USA Today article and you will find the source. About the VCD, if you had read my reply carefully, you would see that it isn't a VCD!! It is actually VTS, VOB, and IFO files burned onto a CD-R and will play in any CD Rom reader without having to have a DVD player, I don't think that warrants a VCD, VCD's are terrible quality and you have to have special software to play them, and you also have to have a DVD player. So next time you want to shoot me down, how about reading the article a little closer.
Thank you,
Ben

Goodness Benji, I didn't mean to get your panties in a wad. All I wanted to know was where you got that information. And if it's in USA Today, then it must be true. As for the 5 cd-r thing, I still don't care for the idea of having the swap 4 or 5 discs just to watch a movie.

As for media that works for me, I've had real good luck with all the name brands (Fuji, Memorex, Verbatim, Sony) but bad luck with Optodisc gold (blue is great), Imation and Princo.

J. H. C. people ! just proof your post for antagonisms before sending, there's no reason to one-up the other guy in this forum unless you feel that insecure. There is some really valuable knowledge in the current dialogue if peeps will just leave their personal issues out of it.

This message is to Benjimen. My first, and only post to date, was to ask for some advice! Not to get some jumped up ars@*l! like you preaching the gospel to me. Your head is so far up your own a%s(, you should watch how you brush your teeth.

Anyway, anyone sensible out there with genuine advice re: dvd-r/rw!

Hey, you don't wanna learn, then get the heck off of this thread!! Your name ought to be BigA*% and not Big Joe, that is an insecure name if I ever heard one anyway. And I know you are secretly trying my experiment out at home and don't want to admit it and you probably get off to it.

Benjimen, BigJoe was just being very direct on how you come across on this thread... Why don't we stick to the subject of the thread, and not get on a He-Man trip... Benjimen while your very knowledgeable, you tend to talk down to people who knows less than you. While we are at it lets state things that we can back up, and not what we thought we read in a paper somewhere.

I got:
-Pioneer A05 (great!!!) (dvd-r)
-Philips dvd+rw220 (my first, its ok) (dvd+r)

as Elfstone mentioned:
Great blanks
-Fuji, Verbatim, Sony, but I don't know about Memorex (never had a good thing to say about them)
Ok blanks
-Maxell
Bad blanks
-Princo, Ritex

Thank You All

I've found that Optodisc (the blue ones) and Samsung BeAll's are good -R discs that are fairly reasonable here. I'm not sure about in the UK. It seems for some reason you all are getting nailed on the prices there. Princo was terrible for me but some people find they work good for them. Ritek is also fairly decent, if you can find them. The best advice I can give is to get 1 or 2 discs from various manufacturers and test them. Stick with the ones that work best for you.

I think at the moment the media in the UK is good price wise compared to the states have you looked recently.

The media to look for is the Ritek based disk's both the G03 & G04 media and the Princo X4 speed media i.e the Princo white and datasafe red X4 speed now coming at £0.80 sterling cracking price

Some of the stores here (Ohio) are selling K-Hypermedia DVD-R 5 for $5. I picked up a package on the off chance they might be decent.
I tried to burn 3.5GB of data onto each one, and each one failed about halfway into the burn.
The disks were manufactured by CMC Magnetics, and are still junk.

Using: Sony DRU-500AX in an addon USB housing.

K-Hyper are not that good, if you read threads you will find people stay away from them.

(By the way Ben, You promise to stay civil..)

Yeah, those Khypermedia discs are really bad. I bought some over Christmas and one got stuck inside my machine. Made a real mess too. Took them back and got my money. Also, I think they are the same as the Kingston brand and Optimum that are sold by some office depot like stores. I've learned to stick with name brand for the most part, even though they usually cost more.

I have been sticking to Verbatim & Fuji because of the quality and I get a perfect burn everytime (unless its my fault). But, at $2 each from BestBuy, I want to find cheaper. K-media is not good, Princo not, I had problems with Ritek. DVDPro is ok most of the times, and Maxell is the same as DVDPro. Suxs...

Try Universal media... http://www.dvd-supply.com has them, they are great but I believe they are out of stock, I guess that's what happens with good and cheap media. Princo, K-media,DVDPro and other media never runs out of stock... BECAUSE NO ONE BUYS THEM LOL.

I have been using Verbatim +R's and Maxell +R's 4.7 gb. They have worked great for me, mostly movies, very little data. I tried DVDXCopy Xpress and it made two wonderful coasters for me, so I would steer clear of that until it is finalized. I use DVD Shrink and Pinnacle Instant Copy and have had the best luck with it. Office Max has a sale going on Sunday on Verbatim +R media. $32.00 for a 15 pack of +R or -R and is a buy one - get one free. So if you have an office max in your area, I would suggest that you get down there quickly, it is only one buy per customer per day, that is the only drawback I see.

Well, good luck on all your burning
Cheers
Ben

Oh my, my, my. It seems that someone's vocabulary is very limited to only profanities and abusive one liners and generalizations aimed at other forum members. What a small, narrow minded person this one must be. Hopefully this individual hasn't figured out how to reproduce.

I believe I gave some disinformation regarding the Optimum discs. I think they are made by Emtec and not Khypermedia. Irregardless, they aren't really good so I wouldn't try them. I think out of a 10 pack I was able to burn 2.

I thought the whole idea of this thread was for poeple to talk to each other about a media that could work for us all.

Not to bitch about each other.

At at the end of the day, we all will have different views on a certain disk.

That is what makes this so Damn interesting.

Hello
Finished using Optodisc spindle of 50 DVD-RW, only 10 fails first run through. Only five fails allow to be erased, so really five total fails. The spindle is green on top but the discs are whitetops. Also run through some Princos DVD-RW with only one work and now after six rewrites it also doesn`t work. Surprised someone had sugess with Princo.

Some rants, It is possible to make a four disc DVD set. These are called miniDVD and been around for long time. But a lot of DVD players today will reconize the disc type and when a CD is inserted it will only think that its an audio CD. Thus most of the time this method will not work!
I am not surprise that the crack of DVDxpress didn`t work, When you crack something you break it!!!!!! So buy it, Keep computer software developers imployed and try things the legal way.
Ben where do you teach a computer course? Are you a High School teacher?

I am a graphic designer and layout prepress manager at a commercial printing company and I teach people the design software here and several outside students who come in I teach. I also tutor several people out of my house on using PC Operating Systems and Macintosh Operating systems and burning CD's and making DVD movies and copying movies. And if I crack something it then mine, whether it works or not, so let's not even go there my friend.
What I have works and the midiDVD's you were talking about I have never heard of, however I was able to span the Spiderman movies over 5 regular CD-R's in true DVD (VTS.IFO) format to play on all my stand alone DVD players and on every computer, regardless of whether they have a DVD player in the computer or not. They only require that you have a CD-Rom reader and of course DVD playing software.
I hope I clarified myself a little bit from the ambiguity, and feel free to email me with your thoughts on some of my experimentation.
P.S. - I only download programs and crack them to see if they really do what they claim, if they do I go buy the original. I am the kind of person who likes original stuff rather than a copy, I only copy movies for my dad and sister only because they are family, and are too stingy or broke to buy DVD's, so I am happy to share a copy with them, however I do own the orginals, and so far that isn't breaking the law from what I hear from others on this forum. I guess that article in USA Today was just a big lie and USA Today is just reporting fraudulant news and they are just not credible anymore. (scarcastic ha ha)
Cheers,
Benjimen
