Just so there are no misunderstandings. I definately don't recommend Princo, generally they are pure sh_t. The only disks they produce that have had even a level of success are the white topped 4X disks and they had a 12% failure rate. The reason I ordered more is simply an issue of time savings. I can burn two of them in the time it takes to burn two Ritek. Now the economics of it aren't that great, but cheaper than any other 4X solution I have found so far. If the failure rate goes up with the next batch I will let you know. The reason I periodically buy 10 to 25 disks from different manufacturers is simply that many of these companies discover that we really don't buy crap and they start producing some decent quality at least for a while. Keep in mind your favorite manufacturer can suddenly produce pure crap. I bought a 200 pack of Lead Data disks in November 2002 that were perfect. Not one bad burn out of the 200 (that wasn't my fault). When I reordered the same SKU they shipped me a box of dung.

If you're only using 5 CD's though, doesn't that require some further compression, or a different encoding technology? The movie itself is over the 3.5 gb available on 5 CD's. (I realize this is not germane to this thread, but I'm curious).

Zerxez, You might want to try DVDPro (up to 4X) on Meritline.com. Now I am refering to the 25pack, which has the center underside silver. I had a success rate of 25 out of 25. But don't order in bulk cause they send Princo crap. It didn't have the silver center on the underside, and the edges badly cut. The 25pack on the spindle was superb...

If anyone is interested, here are the details about copying DVD to DVD without having to have a DVD burner:
I had orginally hoped by posting that it would generate some pure curiosity. I don't know how many people have really gone over the edge on experimenting with this kind of stuff but you know necessity is the mother of invention. My situation is that I work at a commercial print shop and there is a lot of dead time on my hands sometimes. Well, unfortunately we don't have a DVD player in any of our computers, especially my primary PC that I use. So, since DVD Shrink and Pinnacle InstantCopy is so new, I didn't think people had really tried what I did, but in DVD Shrink, it allows me to custom choose the size of my target disc. I set that value at 700 mb instead of 4.38 gb. This allows me to break the movie into segments and yes there is a maximum level of compression of level 8 and also cutting out subtitles and other languages, but the result is still astounding. Pinnacle InstantCopy doesn't care what kind of recordable media you have in your burner just as long as the media you choose from your hard drive will fit on it. Well, I just choose the segement from my hard drive and of course it is just under 700 mb, however it is still a VTS.IFO and VOB true DVD format quality, NOT VCD or MPEG so my DVD players will see them and unbelievably enought play them. My regular CD-Rom reader will see this CD as a DVD and play it with power DVD and the quality is so outstanding even with maximum compression levels. If you have any further questions about more of the details and are interested in trying this, let me know.
The best part about all of this (and this only applies to ones that are interested) is that this does NOT require a DVD burner and playback does not required a DVD player however, everything is in original DVD format.
Thank you for your interest my friend,
Benjimen

Benji,
I have honestly been trying to ignore you. This is civil no foul language etc. But man you are gifted with the ability to irritate the most placid personality. This thread is about MEDIA specifically DVD media and the quality of said media. We don't want to know about old technology, like CD burning on this thread. There are other threads in the forums that would probably be thrilled to have your superior intellect, newspaper contacts, and patents for CD burning methods. Further there are probably forums that you can share your secret agent credentials, rocket science mathmatics, and even the few movies in which you were the star. However in this particular thread you seem to take up pages of both your profundities and those of us with neanderthal intellects that can't keep up with your errudition. Therefore I plead with you, No I beg you, please go somewhere that you will be appreciated. Let the rest of us languish in this thread of ignorance and preschool education. Let us be content to discuss our lowly ideas on DVD media without confusing us with concepts and ideas that are beyond our comprehension.

Ok Zerxez, well said, well put. Truce? Not used to forums, more of a chatroom type personality, didn't mean to offend anyone with my behavior and sincerely appologize. Sometimes I get very excited when I discover something new that I just want to share it with people. I am sorry if my discoveries are ancient technology, but I do have several people interested and are emailing me and to be honest I know CD burning is antiquated, but using old media with new software and technology, if nobody experimented, none of us would learn cheaper and more innovative ways of completing a long sought-after task. And off the beaten path Zerxez, you missed your calling, I was so inspired by your last post that I think you should be a writer. Your words were very heart felt without the trite one-liners and profanity. You don't know how much I appreaciate intuitive and constructive criticism rather than domicile, trendy or hip teen talk. I don't mean to demean anyone here and I want to say that from now on, my conduct will be to your approval and anything new that I learn I will share with you with a more humbled attitude.
Your Friend,
Benjimen

Having read this forum, bought a sample pack of dvd-r's to burn on my new Sony DRU510. 100% success for ps2 - included datawrite red 4x, datawrite classic 2x, ritek unbranded & others. Went and ordered 50 datawrite red (cheap from playstationmods.com) & guess what - coaster upon coaster. Disks have data on but ps can't see it. This must be batch variation. I'm going for Ritek from now on. Any thoughts?

Using DRU-500a firmware 1.0g on verbatim 4x datalife's.
Topic: Burntimes on Verbatim blanks.

It seems odd that using Nero it takes me about 36 minutes to burn a 2x disc with 4.5GB of data (verbatim 2x's). On the 4x discs it takes me about 25 minutes to do the same.

Nero indicates that I'm burning at 4x 5+MB/Sec. however it doesn't cut my burn time in half or even near it...any suggestions?

BTW, no coasters so far (30 and counting) using verbatim 2x or 4x media.

Hi, Verbatim is top of the line. Have you considered on trying RecordNow Max instead of Nero?

Hello YYZ
check your settings in Nero, there is a setting some where that checks if the disc can be writen to. This takes 10min no matter what and 25-10 is the 15min that it should take. Also are you verifying that the data has been written? That also takes time. I recommend staying with Nero, but see what settings you have.

For Media I have had good luck with Opto discs DVD-RW, a fifty spindle with only 8 bad discs and for only $2.5 a disc with tax (Canadian dollars). The 8 is after formating the discs after writting errors, these 8 could not be recovered. Total of 15 failed in writing.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check my Nero settings. BTW, what are typical burn times for filling up (4.5-4.65 GB) a DVD at 4x. I'm using a 512mb cas2 ram on NForce2 mobo with 2500+ Barton CPU.

Sorry to get off topic, I'll leave it at that.

You might want to try Pinnacle Instant Copy, it is pretty fast and reliable and if very user friendly right off the bat.

I average 14 minutes for a full 4X burn on a Pioneer A05 drive. Using Nero, this is only a burn not including a verify.

I just got a new Pioneer DVR-A05U after my memorex +R bit the dust. The Pioneer 4x media that came with the drive was perfect, but the K-hypermedia that I bought 10 of (like a dummy) are absolutley useless. Every movie pixellates and stops running about 70% through.

NEVER buy K-hypermedia!

there has to be an answer...

You have a really good burner. It accepts cheap media like k-hyper as well as quality media like Verbatim. I would keep away from the cheap stuff, and stick to the good stuff. Verbatim won't let you down... Riteks 4x are good stuff...

The cheap stuff will give you pixelation, skips and freezes if it plays at all..

Yeah. You know the real bummer is that it burns like a charm, and even verifies data in Nero. I have no idea that there is an error until I start watching the movie and it freezes up. What a drag.

I use a Mac, so hopefully there is a Mac specialist out there who can help. Just about every other DVD I attempt to burn comes out a coaster. I use Verbatim 2x DVD-R media, and an internal burner made by Sony.

What media do you suggest that consistently perform?

I have a NEC 1100A and I've compiled my own list of DVD+R media that works for me: Verbatim, Fuji, Sony, HP, Memorex. These name brands are fairly expensive if you don't get them on sale, but it's risk vs. reward when choosing other brands. However, in my research, I found for this particular drive that any DVD+Rs coded RICOHJPNR00 work well (RICOHJPNW01 for +RWs). (Some Verbatims are CMC but work for me too). I think this is just as important when selecting DVD media, so you should definitely find out what code your DVD+Rs have (use DVDInfo app). From my research, I notice people reported problems with differently-coded media - Smart Buy (PRODISCR01), Princo, Nashua (DATATRAK001), DataTrak (DATATRAK001). Please remember I am just referring to the NEC 1100A only! Anyway, you should check this link to see how compatible media is with your particular drive based on other people's experiences: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdmedia
I've been considering these DVD+Rs too:
Platinum (RICOHJPNR00)
Mirror (RICOHJPNW01)
Intenso (RICOHJPNW01)
If anyone has any experiences with these DVD+Rs and also has the NEC 1100A, please share your thoughts.

BTW, I enjoy reading this forum because it is very informative. Probably saved me from burning dozens of coasters already, so I'm glad everyone shares their own burning experiences.

This is one hell of a long thread and ill be honest with you. I cant be arsed reading it.

However, Ritek G04's are excellent and im just starting to have some great success with new Datawrite 4x Yellows (Princo). I now feel Princo have got their act together.

Speaking of which, Best Buy (yes that Best Buy) has 50 Fuji DVD+R's for $75. Seems like a good price. I've had good luck with Fuji on a Sony DRU500A.
