Within the last five days I've downloaded DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink 3.2, DVD Fab Decrypter and AnyDVD. I already had Nero StartSmart. I've actually been able to successfully copy 3 movies: Something's Gotta Give, Escanaba in Da Moonlight, and Are We There Yet?' but I couldn't tell you how I did it. Nero SmartStart worked for one movie, but not for another. I'm totally confused!

What does each program do and in what order to I use them to copy a movie?

AnyDVD doesn't seem to do anything - when I click on the icon, a box opens with file tabs on the top. I click on them to look at each of them, but when I click on the 'OK' button, the program closes. So what's this program supposed to do?

Hello, kimcq. Try the following step-by-step guides:

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm

In a nutshell:

AnyDVD works in the background to dekey your files. DVD Decrypter is used first to rip an iso image file (ISO Read mode) or a folder of dvd video files (File mode) to your hard drive. Then DVD Shrink can accept as input the output from DVD Decrypter to either recompress the dvd files to fit on a single layer disk or to reauthor the dvd to reburn only the main movie. DVDFab Decrypter serves the same purpose as DVD Decrypter and sometimes works better with some structurally copy protected titles. The output from DVD Shrink (an iso image file) can then be burned back onto your blank DVD using DVD Decrypter in ISO Write mode.

Thanks laddyboy! This is all so confusing. Right after I posted my question I looked around some more in forums and found a link to a guide that someone created in PDF format that's step-by-step how to do it with pictures! I think it's the link you put in your response to my question. I'm printing it right now. It says the software to use is DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. It's a really nice guide, written specifically for me!

Save a step! Get AnyDVD as described above to decrypt on the fly, even the decrypt the newer movies that Shrink cannot rip. With AnyDVD Shrink sees disk as "not protected" and then can rip and encode. Burn with Decryptor (images) or Nero (files), for DVD backups in only two steps.

I by-pass the DVD Decrypter step. I have mine set to rip and compress with DVD Shrink and auto burn with Nero. Open up dvd shrink/Edit/Preferences/File-I/O tab. Make sure enable burn with Nero is ticked if you want to burn with Nero, then click OK.

Now insert original disc
Open up dvd shrink
Open disc
Either keep entire disc or reauthor
Backup disc.Click the backup tab for all the backup options:

This is where it gets confusing at first. This opens up the target device. You want it set for burn with Nero and your DVD-RW drive should be listed there for Select backup target. Also note where those files go after the backup in case you need extra copies. Double check the rest of those options like region/quality options/settings/and your burn settings.

The combination of DVD Shrink and Nero can do well over 90% of my original dvd rips. The others may need ripped with dvd decrypter/anydvd/dvdfab decrypter/ or dvdfab decrypter express.

Anydvd is a background ripper. Once you see the little red fox icon in lower tray,it is activated. I keep it unactivated until the need arrises when DVD Shrink doesn't recognize the newer encryptions like the sony arccos encryption.

Thanks everyone. Saugmon, I copied your cut and pasted your message into a MS Word file where I'm saving notes on how to do all this. I didn't know I could set DVD Shrink to autoburn with Nero.

Set me straight on some terms. 1st 'Encode' meaning get past the copyright stuff on a an original movie. 2nd 'rip' meaning save the movie/files onto your harddrive after removing or getting past the copyright stuff, and 3rd is to 'burn' meaning the process of putting or saving the files on a new blank disk, right?

Ask me anything about how to manage a $1 million dollar budget for my employer, but learning this DVD stuff has really been a challenge!

Hello kim, once you get dvd shrink set up,learn all the quality enhancements and settings then it's a pc of cake.Sounds so confusing at first and then wham! It's so simple. If you have dual drives,it's even simpler.

Dvd shrink usually pulls off the encryption, except infamous sony arccos. It does a quick analysis in about 2-4 mins, depending on your pc specs. If you can't get through that initial analysis or dvd doesn't recognize that original, then activate anydvd in the background and try again.

Those backup options are confusing at first. You set your backup target for your dvd-rw drive and burn with nero.Make a new folder for the the files to go after the process or dispose of them is the same file for all your backups.Depends how much hard drive space and how long you want to keep them around.

Make your backups region free.

Then there's the quality enhancements. If those are grayed out, then no compression is on them so you won't have the option to choose them. Check the number that dvd shrink tells you for compression. If it says 100,then no compression. If it says 80,then it is being compressed at 20%. The more compression, the lower the quality, that's why I reauthor most of mine. Still on the backup options under quality:
If there is compression, then you have the option to tick perform deep analysis and below that compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation. Highly compressed backups may need these enhancements to improve the playback quality. They'll slow you down, but improve your backup.

Options: Run backup in low priority mode, which I leave ticked. There's also an auto shutdown setting you can use if desired.

Burn settings: Keep the burn speed at 4x to start with.If your burner is capable of booktyping the plus format and you are using plus media, then you can tick that booktype box. Last,I leave box for burn at 30mms.

Once you double check all those backup options settings, click ok and process starts. If you used the quality enhancements: It will analyze/then goes to encode to hard drive/and then burn with nero. It'll look like it goes through dvd shrink twice.
If no quality enhancements are used: It will encode to hard drive, then auto burn with nero.

No multitasking during the dvd backup process.Shut down any unnecessary background programs.Dvd shrink will max out your processor,so any program that starts up,may give you playback issues.

That's the easy part, getting your backups to play in all your stand alones is another story. That's why it is a good thing to use quality media. It'll save you a lot of problems.

It sounds like a lot,but all the info you need is right here.Go through some of the guides, any questions, then come on back.

thanks everyone. I also downloaded a step-by-step guide using DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and Nero. I'll play around with it.
