I like to usse DVD Decrypter to burn. It is easier to change burn speed and lets you choose any speed you want. When you back up with Shrink, make the Target an ISO image file. Then use Decrypter in ISO mode. It also has an option to auto launch Decrypter.
For changing the Speed in Nero, you will have to change it in the "Burn" tab. Yours is probably set to "maximum". Set it to 4x. Also, if you buy DVDs, make sure you get ones "Made in Japan". Sony, Maxell, and Fuji all make DVD+R from Japan & Taiwan. The Japanese ones are top of the line Discs. Also Verbatim is good.

You think it might be possible that either your DVD-RW drive may be going bad?? Also since shrink will use a good amount of your CPU and RAM when encoding. If you have a older/slower system when multitasking during the process of copying, it might cause issues.

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:
1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.
Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604
You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912
Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".
Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Some Maxell DVD-R are CMC mfgd. Not good stuff if that is what yours is. It might be okay if you set the size as temj suggested and lower your burn speed to no more than 4x.
If your burn does not work copy and paste your Nero log file and remember to remove your serial number from the log. It starts with something like 1A21.......

Here is some information about DVD-R and DVD+R
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/250409
As for media some of the best is Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell (+R), and Sony (MIJ). (MIJ) = Made in Japan.
Office Depot Branded +R is very good as well, Ritek R03-02. When it is on sale you can get is for under .30 per disc.
I alway use +R so that I can bitset to DVD-ROM so that my backup will play in any standalone player 99.9% of the time.
