Hey everyone, Good News "War Of The Worlds" has no special encryption. I backed up a "Full Screen" copy to SONY 8X DVD-R media using the latest version of DVD43 and SHRINK. I also bought "The HoneyMooner's" and will also back up a copy next. So I don't know the science behind which DVD releases get the tough encryption, But rest assure "World Of The worlds is no "MADAGASCAR" with regards to it's ability to be copied. I'll let you know how the HoneyMooner's turns out.

Same here, War of the Worlds backup flawless with DVD Shrink and AnyDVD. Mine is a W/S copy, Region 1.

Also Polar Express was flawless!

"ARccOS? is the first and only available digital and dynamic DVD-Video copy control which effectively prevents unauthorized DVD copying on PC. ?Our customers are pleased to finally have found a copy control solution for DVD-Video that protects their content successfully."

I did notice I cannot open the C:drive file that contains the "The War Of The worlds. "I'm getting an error". Unless I try DVD Fab or DVD Decrypter. This movie will only back up using a media disc copy or original DVD disc. Which is ok. I was able to back up my copy with no trouble DVD43 to SHRINK and then Nero. The encryption because of what I described is a little tricky but not enough to keep anyone from backing up a copy the way I descibed.

Honeymooner's is also a simple burn using just DVD43 to Nero Recode2 temp file "Slow Burn".

War of the Worlds was relatively protection free however, the main movie file was enormous for a movie that is only 1 Hour 57 Minutes long. In the Re-Authoir mode, DVD Shrink shows just the movie file to be 7.1 GBs. If you strip out all the excess foreign lanuage audio tracks and Sub Pictures, it still results in a 67% compression. That's an exceptable compression but I still had problems when I burned the compressed movie file to my expensive Verbatim Super AZO 8X blanks. The last couple of minutes of the movie was a dazzling array of little boxes poping up all over the screen. I don't think this was the result of Spielburg's direction. I haven't tried a second burn yet so this just may be a random blip !

I had no major trouble burning this film (WOTW), I have to back up the movie from disc media original or copy as mentioned previously. I would call the encryption on this disc as tricky at best.
I did notice that the original as well as the copy in "Full Screen" appear to have a somewhat grainy picture as if to say this film was shot in widescreen and basicaly intended to be viewed that way. Add that Tom Cruise has been filmed in a previous futuristic film dealing with crime intent and the goverments plan to detect it (Can not remember the name?), It too was shot with this clouded dreamy mist affect which I see when blown up to full screen reduces the original picture quality.

cruise movie was minority report. I also noticed the grainy picture, and put it to test. Tried hard disk copy after decrypter, compressed copy on disc after being shrunk, and original dvd video on 2 different dvd players and 2 hdtv's. That grainyness is intentional. Why? Who knows.

Well, I burned a second copy and it came out ok, I hate it when I get a bad copy on those $1.50 Verbatim Super AZO blanks, really expensive coasters.

This movie has been somewhat under promoted ever since it's initial theatrical release last summer, no big promotional campaigns until recently with the TV ads for the DVD release. Obviously their looking for the Christmas Bucks.

The studio, Dreamworks, has had a bad year financially and it appears that there was little funding available to promote this movie. They didn't even spend the money for a second Special Features DVD, not much room on the movie disk for SFs with a 7.1 GB movie file. It's really a shame as I personally think this is one of Spielberg?s better films from the last fifteen years.

Below is the AnyDVD report on the WOTW's retail disk, really only CSS protection.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)

Video DVD (or CD) label: WAR_OF_THE_WORLDS
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1!

RCE protection not found.
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Structural copy protection not found.
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Bad sector protection not found.
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!
--------------------------------------------------------------
This was way too easy, I'm suspicious !!!

mufin_man - What do you mean they didn't even spend the money for a second Special Features DVD? There is a 2-disc limited edition DVD out right now with the movie on the first disc and the special features on the second disc. I know because I bought it at Best Buy yesterday. The regular price for the 2-disc edition is $28.99, but it's on sale at Best Buy this week for $24.99. I used a $3.00 off coupon to get the 2-disc edition.

Single Disc Edition:

Features:
Designing the Enemy: Tripods and Aliens

2-Disc Edition:

Features:
Revisiting the Invasion: Introduction with Steven Spielberg
The H. G. Wells Legacy
Production Diary: Part I - Filming on the East Coast
Production Diary: Part II - Filming on the West Coast
Pre-Visualization
Designing the Enemy: Tripods and Aliens
And much more!

DakotaFan,

My mistake, I hadn't seen a two disk version.

My wife told me that Wal-Mart or Target had the DVD on sale for $14.95. Most new releases start out at $21 to $24 so this is a real deal! She didn't mention if this was a two disk or single disk set.

I'm sure it was the single disc edition. Best Buy has the single disc edition on sale this week for $14.99. I was at Walmart yesterday as well and they had the single disc edition for $13.84. I didn't even see the 2-disc edition at Walmart, unless I passed it up by accident.

@creaky, you may have noticed that if you backed this movie up to your hard drive that the file will not open using just SHRINK or DVD43. File is copy protected but manages to back up to a blank media disc using Nero recode2 temp file option when using the original DVD disc or copy, i.e. tricky.

Yeah, look again, Cause I'm sure that I cannot open the C:Drive file that contains this movie, without the use of DVDFab or standard DVD Decrypter, which I have not tried. **Correction** error says: "NERO Recode2 encountered an error and cannot continue". "Failed to open file" War_Of_The_Worlds. "Ther are no more files".

I tried backing up my copy of WOTW, WS single disk version, but DVD shrink can't perform a deep analysis after 61%. I tried ANYDVD, DVD decrypter, and DVD43. Nothing.

@xweasel, If you have Nero use Recode2 with DVD43 running. Place the original in your CD or DVD rom drive, place your blank in your DVD burner drive. Use recode to create a temp file (Choose the option: "Recode Entire DVD To DVD")which will burn directly to your blank once Recode2 compresses the original to a temp file. As I have explained here I too have had trouble copying this movie using a C:DRIVE file. But a direct 1 for 1 copy works and records the entire movie as I explained.
