First time post at After Dawn ...Hello all : )
I have backed up a few movies now but I'm unsure on my method. Currently I use a 2 stage method:
Stage 1 dvd shrink 3.2.0.15
Stage 2 nero 6
DVD shrink says it removes macrovision...but does it also remove CSS and all the other protection?
Is my method wrong ... should I be using a 3 stage process starting with DVD Decrypter?

Basically you are on the right track - DVD Shrink with handle over 95% of movies currently available and also remove the CSS protection.
Shink will encounter some problems with some of the newer movies that have ACross or Ripguard protections and you may have to use DVD Decrypter or similar.
Other useful programs for newer movies may include AnyDVD (need to buy after initial 21 day trial period), DFV43 or DVDFab Decrypter.
All these programs can be downloaded from the software section of this site - however DVD Decrypter will dissapear forever after this weekend (courtesy of Marcovision). It is still a very good program to keep in your arsenal.

Hello Colw,
Thank you very much for helping. I seem to get some burns that work fine whilst others have pauses, pixelation, stuttering. I naturally wondered questions like:
is the problem with the blank media?
is the problem with the burning software?
is the problem with the ripping or decryption software?
is the problem with the hardware of the burner or player?
Of the ~5% that DVD Shrink can't handle...how would you know that it can't handle it? what symptoms would it display? Does it give any error messages to say it can't decrypt the dvd or does it seem ok and then just not play correctly?
Finally if i want to be sure of every disc should i burn using the follwing stages:
1)DVD Fab Decrypter
2)DVD Shrink
3)Nero (or would DVD Fab Decrypter be better for burning)
Thanks,
David

My preferred method is to use DVD Shrink to rip and compress. I also have DVD43 running in the background
After analysing has been completed, I use re-author mode to do the main movie only. I then use Nero for burning.
This method tends to handle ACross protected movies including titles such as Bewitched.
If Shrink can't handle the movie, it will normally give you a message such as: out of memory at 26% (or something along those lines) - I don't see it much.
If you get a Shrink error, I would try DVD Decrypter.
I have not used DVD Fab Decrypter to any extent other than having a brief look at it.
Pauses, pixelation stuttering are normally due to poor media (try Verbatim, Ritek or TYs), burning too fast (stick with 4X) or the use of paper labels on burnt DVDs (remove).
To copy a Ripguard movie such as Madagascar - try this method:
Rip with DVD Decrpyter using ISO Read mode
Open the resulting Disk Image in DVD Shrink
Let Shrink analyse the movie
Use Re-author to do main movie only - get rid of all unecessary languages/audio streams etc.
Burn the movie using Nero or similar.
It is good alternative way for doing movies that DVD Shrink may have problems with.
Doing main movie only is a useful way of circumventing protections that are often included in the extras or unreferenced materials part of DVDs.
Have done over 1000 burns and have approx 400 movies in my collection - there is only about 4 or 5 that DVD Shrink could not handle.

Thanks Colw and 9mmruger1 for your replies they are very helpful.
9mmruger1 - I tried the AnyDVD and clone dvd2 option...I maybe didn't give sufficient chance before uninstalling it....but I felt as if i couldn't control it : ) ...I can hear you all laughing but I was thinking why has it started ripping i haven't made my selection about what parts of the film I want yet...but off it went regardless and then i made my selection and it starts from the beginning again....aaah i thought I know its got a great reputation but i'd rather they binned the sheep cartoons and just provide a GUI that gives control to the user. I reckon i'll study the guide you recommened in your signature and maybe give it another chance.
Colw- I downloaded DVD43 and that seems dead easy to use. One query i had though is how it works...is it like saying when it goes green 1) I know how to decrypt it and will be encrypting when you rip the dvd or
2) I have decrypted it now
Finally is there a website i can check where i type it the film and it tells me how it's protected? e.g ripgaurd, CSS, Sony etc

Hi This is in response to COLW's message above. I have made a number of copies and have had some problems with them having a pause or pixelation. I do copy at the slowest speed and have a great read writer. I noticed that COLW states that paper labels can cause this. Does that mean that you do not recomend labels or just certain labels. I say this since I checked them after writing with no porblem and after labeling them and as they get older I seem to be having more problems all the time. It seems that you recomend to remove the label Will this help.

@ gordma
Do not recommend paper labels as they tend to unbalance the disk or cause heat problems - this tends to increase over time.
While some members appear to have no problems with label, the majority of experienced members of these forum would recommend that they not be used.
Try removing the labels from some of your disks and see how they play - you should get much better results

@gordma
As colw states - paper lables are a no no. I personally use a sharpie. Of course if really want lables there are ways to do it with inkjet printable hubs, or lightscribe.
I don't need the pictures, so I just write on em and they play fine.
@svalbard
Clone uses the sheeps cause of Dolly. I understand the premise, but don't care for munchin sheep either. Oh Well.
If you study the guide I referenced at cd-freaks you will gain a more thorough understanding of the operation. It really is a very good program and works very very well.
That being said, I use AnyDVD to break the encryptions, Shrink to compress and make my selections, and decrypter or imgburn to burn to disc.
Cheers.

If you really want to do it right get rid of the Memorex discs. Not only are they unreliable in the burns with bad burns, they also tend to deteriorate in time.
Regarding software: for a long time I've used SmartRipper 2.41 in combination with Nero Recode 2 to backup my DVDs. Lately though, I've been using DVD Decrypter or AnyDVD to rip the images. I still use Nero Recode 2 but I've also been playing around with DVD Shrink - they virtually are done by the same author but it could be argued that Recode is just that much more advanced in the authoring portion.
Additionally, Recode (like DVD Shrink) allows you to replace resources on the DVD, remove unwanted soundtracks, and change the compression ratio for the individual resources. You can even rip just the movie at it's highest capacity compression.
Anyways, some pretty cool programs.

I have backed up all of my dvd'd that I have bought over the years 'just in case' so not new to ripping or copying.
I mainly use Shrink & Nero combination and as stated here it must do 95% of films.
I also have Any DVD, DVD Decryptor and DivXCopy Platinum
So far I only have 2 films I can't backup, Fear & Loathing and Ong-Bak. fear and lothing was a foreign DVD I bought and the issue is with the firmware of my DVD writer I believe, but the disk is badly damaged so not a biggie.
The one film I do want to backup however as is a new disk is Ong-Bak. It fails with ALL the programs listed above at approx 48/49%.
shrink gives the cyclic redundancy error, where as the other apps just sit there chugging away doing very little. I even set the rip settings to agressive and ignor failures but no difference.
the disc as I said in brand spankers, clean and without scratches. the dvd drive is functioning 100%.
any idea's what protection is causing this problem and how to remove it? I believe the file causing the problem (from memory) is VTS_01_03 but not 100% as have slept since I had the problem yesterday.
Thanks :)
