Hello all:

I have been using DVDXCOPY for about a year or more now, and I am tired of the COMPRESSION problems I am getting and the problems that I have when trying to watch these discs on my DVD player.

I am looking for other methods in copying DVD's. So I have turned to DVDDECRYPTER and DVDSHRINK. I have used these in the past with no problem, but just recently as of tonight, I am not able to use DVDSHRINK. I am getting an error when reading from the DVD, or an error when going to the directory where DVD-DECRYPTER has put the VIDEO/AUDIO files....

I downloaded ANYDVD thinking I needed that while using the above programs, and I also downloaded DVDFAB PLAT thinking that might work better...still no luck.

I guess, my first question is, will using DVDSHRINK and DVD-DECRYPTER help my problem with compression and my DVD players be able to play these copies better?

2. Is the compression method on DVDSHRINK and DVD-DECRYPTER better than what is on DVDXCOPY?

Please tell me what information you need from me to help me figure out what is going on with these programs...I will supply it to you as soon as possible.

If you use SKYPE, AIM, MSN, YAHOO....I will supply the info at the bottom of this message so perhaps we can talk live and I can fix this faster....

Thanks:
Scott

Hi Scott,

First, go to your post ~ at the top, on the right there is an edit icon. Click tyhe edit icon and remove your SKYPE and IM information. There are too many "Bad" pple out there and you've just given them far too much information.
Quote:

Compression is compression BUT encoding and recoding is something else entirely. DVD Shrink will produce a far better product than your 2 and 1/2 year, out of date XCopy ever could.

No. Your DVD players will play the same as they have always played. If there is something wrong with your players, it's probably cheaper to buy a new one as opposed to having it fixed.

If however you're asking, will the picture look better on your TV ? the answer is, IF you use the Quality Settings in DVD Shrink then Yes, the DVD will have few if no artifacts (bad spots) as opposed to XCopy. Shrink takes more time to use BUT the quality is far better. A good thing to remember in life, Quality usally takes longer OR costs more OR both. IMO, Quality is worth it. If I have the choice between crap and quality - I always choose quality.

As I stated, IF you use the settings on DVD Shrink, the encoding is better. DVDD doesn't compress anything. DVDD rips and it burns PERIOD !

As for using DVDD & Shrink, sea the guides in my sig.

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks Pete:

I was following all your steps on your website step by step and I am now getting an error with SHRINK telling me PROGRAMMING ERROR - EXCEPTION OCCURRED..

Another ERROR once I turned off the options to create a better looking DVD was: "Invalid access to memory location"

Once I clicked ok, the box where windows wants to send an ERROR REPORT came on the screen and I clicked DO NOT SEND, and the program shut down.

I am at the point of BACKING UP my dvd after using DVD-DECRYPTER.I do have ANYDVD installed and running on my system while DVD-DECRYPTER was working and using DVDSHRINK as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks:
Scott

Sometimes there are programs which "steal" your memory. Every time you load a program, it loads itself into your startup folder SO that when you boot up your PC, you require RAM to run all of your programs. The only programs you should have running when you boot up is:
1. Your AntiVirus program
2. Your Firewall

All other programs will take a fraction of a second to start when you open them. It's the only thing you'll notice because they won't already be open when your PC started.

Go to, "Start", RUN, type in, "msconfig" click, "OK". When the window opens, go to the "Startup" tab. Select, "Disable All", APPLY, "OK", OK again and "OK" to reboot. Now you'll have your 512 MB of RAM to work with.

I have seen pple with 512 MB of RAM and they have had only 112 MB of RAM to run a program with. Trust me, you cannot run DVD video backup programs with 112 MB of RAM.

Adjusting RAM -

To increase your RAM you may change your Physical RAM and you can change your Page file (K). If you want to increase your page file *(K), right-click on your taskbar and click Task Manager. In the Task Manager, click on the Performance tab. Look at the entries in the Commit Charge frame. The Peak entry gives you an indication of the maximum amount of memory used by your computer since the last time it was started. The optimum amount of RAM is equal to this value (assuming the computer has been running for several days and you've run your typical programs during that time). See the Limit entry. This is the total of your RAM and page file (K). The limit should be a minimum of 2X the Peak value. If you can't buy more RAM, you can increase your page file size to increase the Limit value.

To adjust your Virtual Memory go to "Control Panel" ~> System ~> Advanced tab ~> Performance ~> Settings. Now under "Performance Options" ~> Advanced tab ~> Virtual Memory ~> change. Now you can enter the value you deem necessary.

NOTE: Remember that adding RAM chips should be done in even numbers. Done in odd amounts, i.e. 3 slots of 512 DDR-SDRAM slows down your data transfer to 1X whereas 2 slots of 512 DDR-SDRAM passes data at 2X.

* Kernel (K)

I hope that helps,

Questions:

1. Are you ripping a DVD OR are you working with a download ?

2. If it's a DVD, which one ?

3. When using DVDD, did you create a folder for DVDD to put the ripped ones into ?

Was it named VIDEO_TS written EXACTLY like that ~ all in Caps ?

DVDD doesn't give you a folder, you have to make one for it.

Finally, Were you ripping in the "File" MODE ?

as you sea, every detail has to be examined. PLEASE try to remember every little thing you did so we can find the error.

Thanks,

Pete

I am workign with a DVD...

Wrestlemania 12 is the DVD

Yes, I created a wrestle/Video_TS folder as you have listed in your site

yes, I was ripping in file mode.

Do you have a program called "ULTRAVNC"...this allows you to come into my computer and take control as I watch almost like PCANYWHERE or GOTO MYPC but better....perhaps you can come in and see what I am doing wrong...

I am attempting to try another DVD....Multiplicy and see if I am able to do this one or get the same errors....

Scott,

Listen to me very, very carefully. This is more important than you could possibly know.

NEVER, NEVER, EVER allow anybody except a Microsoft tech from an official Microsoft site to go into your PC. If you ever do, understand that to place a small program into your PC that would tell anyone every keystroke you would ever make, for as long as you own your PC, it would be a snap and take a second, so fast, you'll never see it done. Use a credit card once, it would be on the net for the world to use. If you ever put your address in your PC, then emailed a friend you were going away on vacation - your house would be stripped clean before your flight ever left your hometown.

This isn't a fantasy I'm weaving, it's a fact. Your PC could be taken over at anytime with just one little program. You can get a program such as I've described by downloading a malicious email. Allowing someone in your PC is insane. Do not ever do it again. Don't post your contact info on the net. Do not download anything from anyone you do not know personally. When you have a chance, find a teacher who is computer savvy, and ask what you may do and not do so you won't become causality.

NOW, let's try to get you working, alright ?

Good Lad !

Here is a program called AnyDVD. It is the best program on the net for beating an encryption. You can use it Free for 21-days. It should allow you to copy your DVD w/o a hassle.

AnyDVD:

http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html

If all works well, come back and we'll hook you up with a second program that's Free and may help also. It's called DVDFab Decrypter. I want to sea if AnyDVD solves the problem, if it does, DVDFab will help. If it does not ? we?ll have to look for the problem elsewhere :)

Cheers Buddy,

Let me know how you make out ~

I have ANYDVD already....what do I need to do with this...and what program would I use in conjunction with this....

I think i am going to give up on this...I am tired and I think I have exhausted all the possible ways to try and get this working. I think I should just stick with what works (DVD XCOPY) and leave well enough alone....

Perhaps my system was just not meant to work....as for ULTRAVNC, I know all the risks involved with letting someone in on your system, but Scubapete you seem like a person I can trust and with this problem, I thought it was the easiest way to try and fix it. If you should decide to want to do ULTRAVNC, send me a private message and we can go from there...

Thanks:
Scott

I am attempting to use CloneDVD version 2.8.5.1 along with ANYDVD...seems I got the compression up about 61% and there was not much that I could remove from the disc except the 5.1 audio...

I do not think that is much different than what DVD XCOPY was giving me with their compression so I am unsure if he picture will be any better...

Any thoughts??

CloneDVD2 works better than XCopy as does almost any program of today.

Remember, XCopy has been out of business for over 2 years. Like everything, a lot has changed since then. What I don't understand is why there are some companies selling XCopy for as much as $149.99 when it is out of date, unsupported and will never improve AND freeware like DVDFab and Shrink can run rings around it ? Someone should find them and shut them down. It's like selling a loaf of bread that's a year old, tastes like cardboard, it should be in the trash and yet they're selling it for 20X what it's worth. Selling it for $5.00 - maybe $10.00 would be bad BUT they take advantage of new pple who don't know better.

Much better to use Shrink - I just don't know what's going on with you Scott. Be patient, we?ll get it (:D)

Pretend like this is your first post on the subject and tell me, step by step, setting by setting exactly what you did. You said you followed my guide ~ exactly which one. I wrote a couple. Is there anything ~ no matter how small you couldn't do, didn't understand OR for some reason, couldn't do completely ~

Write me a book ~

Another lesson. When you need help with something, provide as much info as you can. The rule is: Information = Solutions

PS. Thanks for the nice words. I wouldn't ever hurt anyone online BUT I'd rather not go into someone's PC unless it was a world crisis. If you developed a "Bug" sometime, you would always wonder if the nice old ScubaPete might have done anything.

We'll get you going Scott, keep the faith AND write that book ~

Finally, Did you, at anytime, do anything else on your PC while Shrink was working.

Something we should have known at the beginning, What are your PC's specs ?

Hmmm...where to begin....

It was a dark and stormy night...wait that is another book...you want the COMPUTER VERSION of this story...

I get your point on DVD XCOPY, but for me it works, whereas all other programs do not. I tried using CloneDVD and that gave me an error as well when reading the dvd....I then went to XCOPY and it made the copy without an ERROR...so for a 2 year old program that is obsolete....very wierd.

As for my specs...I got all my information from the "DXDIAG" and can send that to you if you like....let me know.

As for your site, I followed 2 sections....

Shrink/Decrypter
&
Shrink/Decrypter~full disc

Thanks:
Scott

P.S. I removed DVDSHRINK and DVDD from my system in order to try CloneDVD. I hate having this much crap on my system, especially when it was not working.

P.S.S Please think about logging into my system...do not just end the discussion here...I think that by doing it this way, you will be able to get much more information than I will ever provide and plus you may see something that I am leaving out. AND TO ME THIS IS A WORLD CRISIS!!! LOL

Hey Scott,
It's been a while since the last post, but if you still have the same problem here's a possible solution. Get dvdshrink and dvd decrypter back on your system. New dvd protection prevents dvdshrink from working correctly(since it is no longer updated), so here is what you do:
1. rip the dvd files(file mode) with dvd decrypter to the VIDEO_TS folder on your HDD.
2. get "vobblanker" from videohelp.com, a new way of protecting the dvd for being copied is to insert blank video cells (causes dvdshrink to crash), vobblanker removes these cells and is very easy to use, input folder points to the VIDEO_TS.IFO file and output points to where you want the processed files stored, then just press process. You can get a guide by doing a search for "vobblanker guide".
3. now dvdshrink should have no problem working with the processed files, just drag the processed VIDEO_TS folder into DVDshrink's window (or choose open files and point to the processed VIDEO_TS folder)and your off.
