Hey all,

I've had success with the above combo, but have found that the burning phase with DVD Decrypter has stalled at 20% (only on 1 occasion? The elapsed time gets going but the % does not move on.

I was admittedly using other apps at the time, but nothing too heavy at all.

Is it a rule of thumb to leave the app run solo or is it a must?

Also: does running the process 'in the background' make it less likely to hang if I want to use other apps?

thanks AD peeps

Let DVDD do it's job.

If you want to use other apps then expect to collect coasters and incompleted work.

Ripping, encoding, recoding and burning are the hardest work your system will ever do.

If you want to answer emails or Browse the Net - (NO downloading) then make sure you have at least a Pent 4, 2.8 Ghz processor and 1 GB of RAM. If you do not - go watch TV.

Cheers,

Pete

Absolutely. Like ScubaPete says:

I know that I can only use so many coasters, I only have 9 glasses...LOL

Your best bet is to leave the computer alone to do its thing while burning.

Just to reinforce what we're trying to say, Open your "Task Manager". Do so by right-clicking your task bar at the bottom of your screen. Choose "Performance" and watch while your CPU works on a DVD. When it says 100%, it is using 100%. When you were in there stealing little bits and pieces, you were pulling the rug your decrypter was standing on. That's why it lost its balance and go fall down, go Boom.

I hope that answers the question for all who read this thread.

Cheers,

Pete

Hello beach3032 and others,

I have used this program many times and it has generally always worked very well, many times with other apps running. Just lately, and only on one occassion, this has also occurred to me. i've tried only running DVD Decrypter but it continues to have the same problem... could it just be that specific dvd? or..... please help.

Thanks

Alright 9mmruger1,

I tried it and it didn't work. I tried using AnyDVD as well but the same problem occurs. When it reaches a certain point, it says

Failed to read file "E:\"
Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I hope that helps you help me.
Thanks so much again

@badvent

In answer to your question, yes, a CRC error may indicate a bad disc.
You can try ripping it to your hard drive with DVDFab decrypter (Free). Sometimes this program will get hard to rip discs. Get it at http://www.filepedia.com or from the software tab at this forum. It is real easy to use. In my signature there is a link for bbmayo's web site and he has a great guide for DVDFab.

You have cleaned it of prints and smudges right?

The problem that you are having with your DVD drive is that the transfer mode is reverting to PIO Mode rather than DMA. Follow the instructions below to set transfer mode to "DMA If Available". If you are not able to change the mode delete the secondary IDE channel and reboot. The IDE channel will reinstall itself when you reinstall the computer.

1. Right Click My Computer
2. Properties
3. Device Manager
4. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
5. Double Click Secondary IDE Channel
6. Click Advanced Settings Tab
7. Set Transfer mode to "DMA If Available"

When Windows XP encounters errors with the device it downgrades the transfer mode until it reaches PIO (usually after about 5 errors). This transfer mode is too slow to handle DVD transfer which is why it gets stuck at 20 - 22%. If you encounter the problem again just follow this procedure and you will be just fine.

This describes DMA

Direct Memory Access

Direct Memory Access (DMA) is a capability provided by some computer bus architectures that allows data to be sent directly from an attached device (such as a disk drive) to the memory on the computer's motherboard. The microprocessor is freed from involvement with the data transfer, thus speeding up overall computer operation.
Usually a specified portion of memory is designated as an area to be used for direct memory access. In the ISA bus standard, up to 16 megabytes of memory can be addressed for DMA. The EISA and Micro Channel Architecture standards allow access to the full range of memory addresses (assuming they're addressable with 32 bits). Peripheral Component Interconnect accomplishes DMA by using a bus master (with the microprocessor "delegating" I/O control to the PCI controller).

An alternative to DMA is the Programmed Input/Output (PIO) interface in which all data transmitted between devices goes through the processor. A newer protocol for the ATA/IDE interface is Ultra DMA, which provides a burst data transfer rate up to 33 MB (megabytes) per second. Hard drives that come with Ultra DMA/33 also support PIO modes 1, 3, and 4, and multiword DMA mode 2 (at 16.6 megabytes per second).
