I have always been a Verbatim fan....also i have been more than a little leery of their CD-R Rightly so it seems......i fearfully ran out of my Verb AZO CDR's and couldn't turn down the price...bad move on my part. I thought I was getting a deal and all I was getting was coasters. Of course Liteon burners aren't very happy on a diary of CMCMAG Format Capacity Blank Disc

Yeah don't let it get out, but I have a ton of PSX games backed up CMC Mag CD-R's as well. I need to order some Taiyo Yuden CD-R's and copy them. No way I'm gonna let them wear down my PS2 laser with their cheap ass dyes. I have like 60 PSX games though, so I dunno how soon I'm gonna copy them. You're not the only one who uses crap media. Even the AD Addicts were noobs sometime. Live and learn. Cheers!

It would be interesting to save that (1) CMC Mag disc and scan it every three weeks to see what happens. This would or should say something about the dye quality being used.

but...a cmc mag disc at the creaksters...words gonna get out LOL

Thanks guys for the feed back. "9mmruger1" Thanks for the site, I am going to see if I can figure out how to use http://www.imageshack.org so I can post some tests. I have a Sony DRU 810a burner and I have the latest Nero CD-DVD Speed I think, Ver.4.06.. My results according to my tests were, a 99 with Verb, a 99 with Maxell (RITEKG05) and a 97 with cheap PRINKO..
My "screens" look like yours "Tokijin".. You have no PI failures or PO failures either, but our screens look different than "alkohol's" on Page 1 of this thread!!!!! The bottom half of his does not show jitter but shows PI Failures as does "blivetNC"... Is there a setting that is different on yours and mine? Look at their scores if you would. The lines are VERTICAL Yellow in the bottom half instead of a blue Jitter line? I have no idea how to get a pic in here.. I dont get it.. Thanks all L

@leewantit

Yes, you are right about your settings and Tokijin's settings. There may be a possibility that something is wrong/messed-up with the settings or drive. Apparently, the reason why Tokijin has been getting 100% on his results is because there's no "PIF or Show C2/PIF" is not supported, it's turn off/disable.

To get a TRUE/PRECISE scan results, both PIE and PIF needs to be supported from your drive. Jitter is not a big deal, all you really care is PIF, PIE and the Quality. Without the C2 PIF, Nero CD-DVD Speed doesn't know what's the real deal, so it won't give you a precise results. Hope this clears things up for you now.

Below is an example from a good scan + the quality of the disc.

Thanks for the info Alky. I love the 100's, but I knew something wasn't right. I downloaded the latest version of CD/DVD Speed and I'll post some of those scans. Weird, I downloaded the latest version of Nero CD/DVD Speed, and I have the same probs. I have C2/PIF checked, but it's still 0's across the board. Maybe BenQ drives don't support PIF/C2 scans? I'm gonna download DVDInfoPro and see if that works.

Thank you for looking at that for me :-) .. Well at least I know I'm not crazy... I have tried everything to get it to work as well as download another version from Nero. I got the same results though. I have no clue as to an off/on for PIF's that I can find, I have them checked they just don't apply. What could possibly be affecting the Drive? I just bought the DVD recorder it a Sony DRU 810a 2 weeks ago. I see you have the one I used to have the 710a, so I don't think it's a Sony thing? Could you possibly look at your settings to see if anything pops out at you? Is it possible it could be a ""Nero Video or DVD Decoder""??? I am not using the Nero decoders with my set up. I installed "DVDXPACK" to get an Mpg 2 decoder which is an Intervideo decoder.. I know that,that codec is being used and not Nero's.. I view or play everything using Windows Media Player and the Nero decoders are not compatible it tells me. I use the ""Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility"".. It is a nice tool if you have never seen it.. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=de1491ac... Have you a way to see what decoder you are using maybe that is it?? Or have you any other thoughts after what I have just told you? Thank you for listening...L

We have the same burner and the same problem. I don't think it's a coincidence. The Sony DRU-810A is a BenQ rebadge. My guess is the Burner itself doesn't support C2/PIF scans. Here's another program you can try which might help. I will try to see if it'll give me a complete scan as well. We should post and compare notes. http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
Lemme revise my earlier statement. After a little checking, the free version of DVDinfopro contains adware. :( So I'm not downloading it. Oh well, I don't why I can't get the C2/PIF errors to come up with Nero CD/DVD Speed. I don't think they'd affect my quality scores more than a couple points anyway. My firmware is up to date, I use high quality media, my burner is in DMA mode, and I shut down all programs while burning, I use quality burning software like Nero, DVD Decrypter, Alcohol 120%, and DVD Shrink, so I know I'm doing it the right way. I think Creaky has a point. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in these scans, that we forget to simply try our backups and see if we have any skips or CRC probs. I haven't seen any, so I'm not worried about it. Peace.

I don't know why your DRU-810A wouldn't read C2/PIF since the BenQ 1640 that it is based on does. I looked up a review on Google and the reviewer was wondering about that also. I guess they decided to leave that feature out of the ones they sell to Sony. I wonder if the Plextor 740 will read PIF since it is also a rebadged BenQ 1640? I suppose that BenQ wants their own line to be perceived as "Better". Who knows?!!

@ Alcohol >>> OK Tokijin, "PIF or Show C2/PIF" are not supported by the 810a but read this...Go to Nero Info Tool and it is not checked!!! I found this site while surfing for reasons Nero CD/DVD Speed will not read PIF with My Sony 810a ... It is interesting and explains that the drive does not support PIF... But I am too chicken to try the FLASH it refers to. Does anyone here have enough knowledge about Flashing and can it Flashed and undone or Flashed back to original setting if need be??? Leewan Found it here >>> http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=158244 or read below;

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BenQ 1620 is overall a better burner compared to 1625, however 1620 is an old product that has been replaced by BenQ 1640. You can find the 1640 in other OEM brands such as Sony DRU-810A and Plextor PX-740. The Sony and Plextor can be crossflash with BenQ 1640 firmwares and it will perform as good as the BenQ 1640, including full support for Nero CD-DVD Speed quality scanning (PIE, PIF, POF and Jitter)

Another drive that can do quality scanning is Lite-On 1693S, 1635S, or 16H5S, but the Lite-On drives only supports PIE and PIF.

Eh, that's good info, but there's no way in hell I'm cross flashing my burner with BenQ firmware. It might work, but what's the point? Basically the way I look at it, what's a 100 quality score with C2/PIF errors or failures factored in? A 97, 95 at worst. My burns are high quality, and I'm not concerned enough about C2/PIF errors to care. I probably could cross flash my burner fine, but I choose not to. The risk is I fry my burner, vs the reward, oh boy I can get accurate Nero CD/DVD speed scans. Well Odelay. Not worth it in my opinion.

Hey Dave you are right I didnt see you had written on the matter at hand. It is evidentely the same burner as the BenQ 1640 and can be flashed to work to enable the PIF feature in CD/DVD Speed. I am just not knowledgeable enough about the procedure...Brk brk brk brk , lol If anyone is I would like your input.. Thanks guys Leewan

I looked at that thread you mentioned at CDfreaks. Those people are in love with CMC Mag for some reason or other. I read that no one has ever faked a CMC Mag. That sure is a relief. Just imagine thinking you had a wonderful CMC Mag and it was actually MCC or some other media that actually burns well. As far as cross flashing your Sony to a BenQ, I don't know if I would do it or not. It would probably work, but maybe not. I had an old TDK burner that I read was a rebadged NEC. I downloaded some cross flash firmware and killed it dead. It was plenty old and beyond its time anyway but you need to remember that this can happen. I imagine I probably did something wrong.

Yeah I noticed the CMC Mag media lovefest as well. I know CD-Freaks is a well respected site, but I have to question their knowledge of burning (at least the people in that particular thread) if they advocate CMC Mag media. There's no reason any veteran of DVD Burning should ever use CMC Mag media over TY's or Verb's. My number one nemesis in the PS2 forums are noobs who constantly swear cheap media works as well as MCC or TYG media. I can understand why you guys don't venture there much. It takes restraint not to tell people what they can do with themselves sometimes.

I once crossed-flashed my DRU710A to try the Lite-On SOHW 1633S firmware just for experiment, which of course, my DRU701A is a rebadged of the SOHW 1633S and I used it for a couple weeks (maybe 2 ir 3 weeks only) and everything performed well. However, I changed it back to the original Sony's firmware.

If you'd asked me, I really can't say yes or no (50-50), try to cross-flash the firmware only if it's still under warranty and if it's only you have additional burners on hand. It's kinda risky, this is a tough call.

If I remembered it correctly, I think Doc. has crossed-flashed one of his burner before and he said it's burning flawlessly. However, the choice is yours.

Alky, just the man I wanted see lol. I downloaded DVDInfoPro and here is my scan of a backup of Devil May Cry 2 disc 1:

The PIF's are still absent, as you can see. There's no way that's accurate, right? It's just because my BenQ doesn't support C2/PIF scans, correct? Thanks for your input.

The only crossflashing I have done is on lite-on drives and it was only to a later imroved vs. I had a litey LDW-451S that I crossflashed to a SOHW-832S to increase burn speed and it worked ok. The litey I have now is really a SOHW-1633S crossflashed with 1653S f/w. This really improved the performance of the drive imho.

As far as crossflashing from a rebadge to the f/w of the oem maker, I say don't fix it if it ain't broke. Now I can justify and condone flasing with modified f/w to inable bitsetting and or to bypass riplock. Just my 2 pennies.

as to the CMC love affair over at cdfreaks, i'm a member over at cdfreaks but just won't post often cus God forbid you actually diss a CMC Mag disc. all you ever hear is that NEC are great with CMC Mag blah blah blah.

Maybe we at AD need to convince all ppl having burning woes to go out and buy an NEC burner instead of fixing Nero logs/changing media - NOT!

I mean I've heard NEC Burners are decent, but don't you have to use hacked firmware just unlock booktyping/bitsetting? Okay my burner may not support C2/PIF Scans, but the burn quality is outstanding. I mean I dunno, but expert's aren't Litey's and BenQ's a little better than NEC's?

NEC just don't seem to want to prove bitsetting capability (i don't know why) but hence why there are the experts such as Liggy et al who rovide the firmware.

i'm not scared of messing with/crossflashing firmware etc, but when it comes to buying a drive i always buy one that bitsets by default over one that doesn't. (and i rarely even use +R discs!)

I wonder if the Plextor 740 will read PIF since it is also a rebadged BenQ 1640
As far as I know it does not, I owned one of these for a few days and took it back and replaced it with a Plex 716A. The problem with the drive is that it is not a true Plex so it will not interface with PlexTools. However, it is not a true BenQ and will not interface with BenQ suite. It does not know what it want to be. In order for you to get the BenQ feature you have to flash it to a true BenQ 1640 with hacked fw. The only way I could get the drive to do anything was to use DVD InfoPro to booktype and scan.
