in a nutshell, thermal dvds are the ones that look holographic...
then there are the thermal printables, which when printed on, give you an almost exact look...
here's a good example...

this is what a thermal would look like printed on.. (and this is just a random pic i found), also, you see alkohols sig, his gran torisimo, thats a thermal that has been printed on..
here is a non thermal, like the riteks you listed above ..and also, not a full hub printable...

It's been my experience that ink won't stick to thermal printable discs. You ned a thermal printer. Although I could be wrong, the upper disc you have pictured looks like a silver ink jet printable disc. Some DVDs look better on them, but I generally stick with the white. I have some thermal ink jet printables that a friend ordered by mistake and I sure can't print on them.

Thanks for the info Gear79. Good to see you're still around ForknDave, keep popping in with the useful tidbits of info. Go with DVD-R's for the PS2. They're more universally compatible with all models. As far as what burner to get, some of the members here could give you better advice. I got a Sony DRU-810A which is an OEM BenQ 1640. The burn quality is great, it's worked out well. I've had 0 coasters as a result of the burner/media. I've had 2 coasters on DVD+R DL media, both as a result of horribly scratched originals. One I later copied and worked out. As far as info on burners, here's some reviews: http://cdrlabs.com/

well, as far as the silver inkjet printables go............ guess what alkohol uses to print his with !!! an epson R300 inkjet... not a thermal..
i guess its just printer quality, i have the epson R340, but all i have used is the white hub faced ones myself...

as far as burners, i have a litey 1633 and i just love it, but thats my opinion....

I dunno, do you really want a Light Scribe drive? I don't know much about Light Scribe technology, but I think they're more expensive then conventional burners. Keep in mind that CD-R labs review is a little outdated, there have since been numerous firmware upgrades for it. If you're comfortable with that drive, then go ahead. Liteon's are excellent quality.

i'll clarify this on alkohol's behalf, because i have some of the SAME discs he uses...
Quote:
well, as far as the silver inkjet printables go............ guess what alkohol uses to print his with !!! an epson R300 inkjet... not a thermal..
the silver inkjet printables that both alkohol and i use are Taiyo Yuden silver inkjet printables, NOT thermal printables...

they are identical to the white inkjet printables with the exception that:

1. they are not white, but silver..giving the final resulting backup after printing on Epson R series printer the "holographic" look to it.

2. the white TYs inkejet printables ARE HUB PRINTABLE, while the TY silver inkjet printables are NOT full-faced printable...meaning, not all the way to the hub...

the Taiyo Yuden flavor, there is a BIG difference between the "silver thermals" (which are the "normal" dvds that people usually buy...or the "silver shiny" or "silver lacquer" depending on who you ask, it goes by various names) and the Taiyo Yuden silver inkjet printables...they are 2 ENTIRELY different "types" of discs in terms of the "printing surface"...

you WOULD need a thermal printer to print onto the "silver thermals"; but, you can use the Epson R series inkjet printers to print onto the "silver inkjet printables"...it's exactly the same as printing onto a white inkjet printable TY, same process... :)

if what i'm saying is confusing, here is a link to what both alkohol and i use in terms of "silver inkjet printables"...they are very diff. than the "thermal silver" discs...

http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-inkjet-printable-8x...

these you can print onto using the Epson inkjet printables... ^^

i think some people are getting these confused with the "normal ones" found here below:

http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-r-me...

these ARE NOT printable unless you have a thermal printer...the Epson ink WILL NOT adhere to the surface~

and finally, these are the full-hub WHITE inkjet printables...

http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-white-inkjet-printable-8x-...

hope i didn't make this more confusing that it already seems...but, Taiyo Yuden makes 3 flavors of "printable discs"...2 of which you can use an Epson printer, the last you can only use a THERMAL printer to print onto, hence the name "silver thermal lacquer"

@Bleiss2

The sony drive should be a rebadged lite-on, NEC has a good deal at newegg plus many others: http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=5

Best buy has the Epson R200 on sale this week for $49 locally, but I couldn't find it on the website.

@tfarsrsx
it depends on what your doing. i use dvd+r because my burner prefers them, and i can bookmark them to dvd-rom easily, so it really doesnt matter. dvd-rs are cheaper i believe

Thanks for the clarification. I was going to reply back, but since you're the DocTY, I'll let you do the speech, so others can comprehend better. Evidently, you handled it 3 times better than me, LOL.

Yeah I had a little party with Sin City, it's one of those non compressable deals. I was aware of Alky's tutorial with VOB Blanker, but it was the wee hours of the morning and I was too tired to read. So using AnyDVD and Nero Recode 2, I got it down to 4503MB's. My Sony DRU-810A supports overburning of DVD's, so I said what the hay. It gave me a couple burn error's, but the end product worked. I know you're not supposed to burn that close to the edge, but again it was 6 AM and I was tired. Anyway the movie plays fine, the extras have no sound. I had to take it out. Next time I'll just use Alky's tutorial lol. Btw, I backed up Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on the HIJ Maxell DVD+R's with Nero Recode 2 and AnyDVD, the picture quality is incredible. I'd dare anyone to tell the difference from the originals. The MIJ's have matched my TY's so far. Nero Recode 2 is a great piece of software as well as AnyDVD. I'd always wanted to take the stupid previews out of the movies. That combo has replaced DVD Shrink for me. Thanks for the great tips all. Cheers!

@DocTY

You're more like our media GURU! LOL

@Tokijin
Nero is a fantastic package. A lot of people don't realize the potential of it all, they use this program for this, then that program for that... Nero would do it all from the start all along... I had a lot of barney turning my old SVCDs into DVDs... Had quite a few programs for the process... None left me 100% happy... One night, at around 4 a.m. i opened NVE, and imported the files directly from the cd... Sh@t! It worked! All that time messing around with loads of apps, when all i had to do was use Nero!

I know this sounds like one of those slim fast adverts, but sometimes it's worth using the apps we normally take for granted...
With good media preferably...
