Gear me old mate, i learnt a lot from here, i won't lie or even try to hide it, but a lot of stuff i do, i try to do it myself on my own time, trial and error, you should know what i mean. Normally i only use guides if i run out of ideas, haven't got the time, or simply just to polish up my technique...
What i done with my SVCDs is on a guide done by Alkohol that i only just found out he had it... It's exactly the same as i do!

I use Nero and CloneDVD2/AnyDVD most of the times! Also have a lot more apps that i use every now and then but those are for sure my favorites.

Yeah Nero is really good. I dinked around with all kinds of BS programs like The Film Machine and Avi2DVD and failed miserably to convert my movie files to dvd. Nero Vision 4 is fantastic. I'm using DVD Region Free+CSS Free in combo with Nero Recode 2 and burning to the MIJ's. The whole process works like a charm. The latest version of Region Free+CSS Free even gets around Sony's Arccos protection with ease. Truly it's a great app. I'd have to say I like it better than AnyDVD, that didn't get around the Arccos protection. Plus it takes out the annoying previews and adverts. Nero is the champ for all around apps. The MIJ scans all have 5 PIF's or less. Cheers!

Actually, i use those programs as well on very specific tasks! I use The Film Machine with Cinema Craft Encoder to put subtitles into AVi's then burn them (using Nero of course) as DVD's. It works a treat! The quality is suberb!
I use AVI2DVD to convert my OGM files to DVD... It's not the best but it's the only one that works for me...

I haven't messed around with subtitles yet. Hopefully I never have to. If I ever download some anime that requires subtitles maybe I'll contact you Permiggs. A lot of anime is in ogg/ogm format, so maybe Avi2DVD would work for that. Nero Vision 4 cant handle ogg/ogm files?

No Tokijin, it doesn't. I don't know if there are any codecs for it either. I'm fairly new to this OGM file thing as well, so AVI2DVD is the only one that works... There might be others, but i'm happy with this one. At the moment i'm using HCenc, for some reason CCE doesn't work... CCE is without a doubt the best encoder i know of... Yeah, by the time you start doing it i should be able to help you on-the-fly.

I would usually agree on the whole no name media thiing, but I have some interesting and GREAT news, I purchased two 25 packs of GC ( Great Quality ) DVD-R's from Fry's Electronics, of course thinking they were generic since I paid $3.00 each 25 pack..... Well.... take a look....

I am assuming sony enjoys makiing them lol.

Well I hate to rain on your parade, but there's a couple things you need to be aware of.

A. Nero CD/DVD Speed's quality scores are based on PIE's. The Sony DRU-810A doesn't support PIE scans. I know, because I have one too. The only way it'll support PIE scans is if you cross flash it with BenQ firmware. It's an OEM BenQ1640.

B. That media you're using isn't too bad. It's good quality Sony Media made in Taiwan. It's not on par with MIJ, TY, or Verbatim, but it's probably better than Ritek/Ridata.

C. Your firmware is outdated, 1d is the most current release. You can obtain it here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2179

D. I'm not saying this to give you hard time, I didn't know any of this stuff before I talked to the likes of Doc, Alkohol, Gear79, ForknDave, Creaky, Mort81, and anybody else who contributed to this thread. I'm relative noob to non PS2 DVD burning, but thanks to these guys, I learned to backup movies like a pro in no time flat. Cheers!

92. Q. What is firmware and why should I care?
A. Firmware as defined by AD:
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
Newer Firmware can unlock new features that are sealed on certain DVD Burners like booktyping, or simply enhance your existing Burner by improving burn quality and media compatiblility. Keeping your Firmware up to date is essential to ensure quality burns and maximum functionality from your DVD Burner. When flashing your burner with new Firmware, be very careful. Make sure you shut down all programs running in the background, the DVD-ROM drive is empty, and you follow all the directions included in the Firmware download exactly. A bad flash can fry your DVD Burner. Proceed with caution. You can find all the Firmware you'll ever need here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

no worries you didnt rain on my parade, I am still extremely happy to have found some pimp media for cheap, makes me smile ^_~, none the less I am extremely new to this scene, ( xbox modding is way different ) and I am pleased to have your comments. I will update my firmware and flash to get more results. Ty.

Yeah I love my Sony DRU-810A. It's been nothing short of fantastic with burn quality. I've burned to Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's, Verbatim DVD+R DL media, Maxell High Grade DVD+R, and RitekG05 with great results. Btw, I went to buy more of the High Grade Maxell's at Wal-Mart recently and they were replaced with.... Memosux! I guess that show's Wally World's knowledge of quality media. Oh well I settled on the Sony DVD-R's made in Taiwan, the same media code as you ended up with. I wanted to give them a try. I've used RitekG05 with good results for backing up movies, but I wanted to try something different. Cheers!

You are real lucky getting Sony for GQ brand. All I've ever managed to get the few times that I bought GQ were Lead Data and others that were worse. I have some GQ +R that I bought sometime last year and they are ISO1 which is some of the worst crap I've seen. I bought some GQ CD-Rs a couple of years ago and they are all blank now. They've been recorded on, but all the data is gone. I tend to not buy any media at Fry's anymore. Actually, I tend to not buy very much there because I've gotten so much stuff that didn't work. I've seen things on shelves there that had RETURN TO VENDOR stickers on them.

i'm with forkndave on this one too regarding Fry's Electronics~ :)

i've personally had 2 bad/horrible experiences with them buying a "supposedly" NEW in box motherboard, when i got it home, it was definitely refurbished and on top of that, was missing a few CRITICAL pieces that were necessary for it to even function~ :P
(ie. the plastic piece that holds/mounts the cpu & heatsink to the actual board was missing as well as a few of the capacitors/resistors being "bent" right out of the box.)

naturally, this went right back to Fry's for a FULL refund the following day, i'm weary about ANYTHING that they sell there now if they advertise a "special combo" that they themselves put together to sell as a "deal/package" :) they use customers returns/RMA'd goods and just put that thin plastic saran-wrap looking thing over the box and melt it to "look like" the manufacturer's packaging/seal~
i know for a fact they DO NOT CHECK/TEST customer returns or else they would have obviously noticed missing parts/pieces for the mobo.

and as stated before, you got VERY luck getting the Sony media ID on those GQs...it's NOT worth my trouble nor my time to 2nd guess and hope for the best with cheap/no-name media (office depot is the only exception at this point IF you are looking for Ritek manufactured media) :)

good luck with your future purchases, while i would recommend you not get any more "GQ" brand discs, but it is YOUR money...do what you will, i'm willing to bet you WILL NOT get the Sony media ID again next time around...you just had a lucky day

I should have passed up the CD's and went to Jackson or something and tried to getrich,oh well, better lucj next time eh? none the less it was a fluke accident that I got them, I wasnt even planning on doing so when I arrived there ( on par with your comment sI bought my wife a new keyboard the same day, went home ( hour away )) opened itto find the thingpretty much ruined, missing 6 keys and the bread board was out of whack... I think the two missing screws on the back showed me someone tried to fix it. Two weeks later ( busy weeks ) I made it back up there and returned it. Yet to return.

Lite-On burners are good and the good thing is that it (they) supported bitsetting or book typing when using DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL. Hence, my DRU710A is a rebadged Lite-On SOHW 1633S. I think I'm going with the BenQ Lightscribe for my next burner.

Best of luck with your new Lite-On burner.

which Liteon burner model you going with Bleiss2? i also use the Liteon SOHW-1693S as well as the 1633S that alkohol uses (i have both the Sony dru-710a as well as the OEM Liteon SOHW-1633S) :p

just curious, that's all...they're good drives...but, i'm gonna get my hands on the Benq dw-1650 when it's actually in stock next...been keeping a close eye on that one...

i personally don't care for the Lightscribe technology, but hey, we all have our own vices and guilty pleasures~ :)
