Hey All!
This is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyways. I'm in the market for DVD-Rs with a decent balance of cost and quality. After searching around the forums here I found this... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/262299 ... which makes me think that Office Depot may be a decent source of media. They've got a 100pk of DVD-Rs for a mere $79.99: http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=681264&&An=text
Does this look like a decent deal? Or could someone shed some light on what possible brand the Office Depot DVD-Rs might be? According to the previously mentioned post, the DVD+Rs are Riteks - so I'd assume the -Rs are Riteks as well.
Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT: Anybody know of what to look for on the wrapper for Riteks? (Example: For Taiyo Yuden you'd look for Made In Japan)

WOAH THERE NELLY~!!!
you DEFINITELY do NOT want to pay $70+ for 100 pack spindle..that is INSANE~!
the office depot brand IS manufactured by Ritek Co. (which happens to be a taiwanese company, so, they are gonna be "made in taiwan"... :)
the 8x DVD-R will be coded RitekG05 and the 8x DVD+R format will be RitekR03...both QUALITY "budget" minded media~ :)
whether or not they are as good as Taiyo Yuden media, simple answer "NO", but for the "sale" price...i would not recommend any other...
wait for the Office Depot sales on media...their own branded discs will usually be "buy 1 get 1 free" promotion...and the MOST you should pay for them would be about $30/100 pack spindle...during the sales, it's even less...closer to $0.25/each~! i believe last time it was "buy 1 get 1 spindle free"; but i COULD be mistaken...
be patient...DO NOT BUY THEM AT THIS PRICE...for $70, i'll sell you a 100 pack of GENUINE Taiyo Yudens (and i will STILL make a profit, though, not my intent; but you get my point) :)

Heed the warning of Doc. Last time I bought them on sale they were DVD+R's 50 pack for 24.99, buy 1 get one free!
No brainer. You can get a hundred ty's for $47.00 or 200 for $70 at supermedia.

I hate to see anyone pay that kind of price for media. OD does have a sale about once a month.Usually buy 1-get 1 or 2 free! I've seen them as low as 20 cents each!
Don't worry about spindle size.For the 8x speed,riteks are the manufacturer of their media in the 50 pack and 100 pack spindles. This is excellent quality media,for a budget price.They perform great on all 3 of my benqs.There should be a sale coming up shortly.

If you need media right now, go to officemax like catfreak just posted you can't go wrong with verbatim ! ....heck for $14.99 get a 50 pack and give it a shot, i think you might actually like it :)

Verbs are very good, especially in the DVD+R format, whether it be 8x/16x either MCC003/MCC004, when booktyped, the playback is terrific~ :) i've been using my Verbs a little more often these days and when i go to watch the movies, stunning pic. quality..and at that price the others suggested above...you really CAN'T go wrong :)

Those gentlemen are steeering you right Officedepot like BESTBUY has a sale like every sunday almost! and usually it's either maxell DVD+R/DVD-R media or Their own labelled media (OFFICEDEPOT ) The maxells are also often Riteks so all else being equal Go for whichever is on sale /the best deal! You may want to Check the sales on sunday for Fuji media -Usually at BESTBUY ! If you can find the Spindles of Fuji that are MIJ= Made in Japan those are actually Taiyo Yudens ! But if Verbatims are on sale They are excellent as well ! if you just want to spend less than 80.00 dollars you may want to try

saugmon- You tell 'em Got the maxells that OD had on sale Black friday ! But price matched 'em at WAllYWORLD ! so the price worked out to about .20 cents & tax ! & the packs I checked were Ritek 05's & 03's A little + & - and saved myself another trip ! I was at wallyworld at 4:45 am black friday.I picked my dad up one of those 7" flip top tv/dvd players for $68 and then hit staples at 5:45 for their $3 playo-lol/$30 maxtor diamond max 200 gb hard drive/free surge protector/and free 5 sheet shredder with trash can:All after rebate! I had to test that player before my dad takes it down to tennessee for the grand kids, and my booktyped backups played perfect.No disc error on my dash backups.That's why I don't mess with the dash anymore.Heck of a lot less compatability from all 3 of my benqs.
I can kick myself in the a** because they had the sanyo 19" lcd flat screen monitors for a hair under $200, UGGH! I just put my broken pc back together again,and the old monitor was shot!
The last sale at OD, I got 50 ritek +8x ritek-ro3-only spindle they had,and they let me have a spindle of 50 maxell-002-00 for the free one to match. Sweet deal for $25. They had a ton of OD 16x.The 8x are performing very sweet,just didn't want to risk driving 45 mins back to take the 16x back in case I had trouble with them. I think they may code as Ricohjpn-r03?

Thanks for the multiple words of wisdom guys. I wasn't too keen on spending $80 DVD media, but I'm in that uncomfortable space between having just purchased a Benq burner and don't have media. I'll keep my eyes out for deals this weekend. I'd prefer not to purchase on line this first time since I'd like to start my system backups this weekend. But we'll see.

saugmon- waiting for newegg to get the black bezel BenQ DW 1640's in againat a resonable price ! Bought a 400Gigger Hitachi @ compusa with a 40.00 rebate figure I will add a couple of buckeroo's to that and buy my Benq ! So I can booktype like the big boys !Got newegg to put me on the autonotify list for the 1640 !would have gone to staples fer the HDD but no staples here , just the other guys ! Compusa, circuitcity, Bestbuy, officedepot !ect! Plan on removing Nec 2500A & installing 1640 in it's place ! will probably put the NEC in a Usb Enclosure if that would work ! I know about the kicking manouver ! OD had a buy one get one free sale on their media really reasonable and I did.nt get any at the time! But got some Maxells/riteks so almost about the same little more expensive ! But that's why I come here ! If you don't know it's money you'll blow ! Keep up the good post saugmon . i use BOTH TYs and Verbs, as you can see in my sig, so, it's like comparing apples to apples...should i go with green or red? bottom line, it's still a delicious apple, regardless of color~ :)

They will not accept rainchecks for some reasopn. Its alright though. I eventually found some. It was a little out of the way but I was able to pick up 2 packs of these verbatim's.
On a side note, these dvds scored a 95 in a nero burn speed quality test as opposed to a 0-77 that was scored by the HP's that I picked up when I was unaware of the importance of quality when it came to dvd media.

that's cuz HP sucks, along with Memorex, TDK, Philips, and other "store-brand" names, with the exception of Office Depot~ :) the REASON behind why i say ALL those brands "suck" is because they ALL at some point or another used/use CMC MAG as their manufacturer.
that is a proven LOSER manufacturer on here, most will agree with that statement~ i, on the other hand, also think TDK's own manufactured media is UTTER CRAP as well...and i don't really care WHO disagrees with me there, that's just MY own opinion...the ones with the TTG01/TTG02 coding~ :P
stick w/ the "good stuff" and you will be just fine~ my sig. is full of GOOD media ID codes and you will have continued success using GOOD quality media~
