I've been using dvdshrink for almost 2 years now and have had no problem. Now whenever I start backing up it'll get 80% (on average) of the way there and then just restart the computer. I think it might be some codec or software I've installed but I can't figure out which one. The ones I can remember are xvid, divx, ac3, and directx. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling all of them (except directx). I have the latest video card drivers and motherboard drivers. I don't know about firmware.

Here are my system specs (hope it's enough):

nforce 3 motherboard
AMD 64 55FX
1024 MB RAM
Leadtek Nvidia 6800 Ultra 256 Video Card (Latest drivers 81.95)
16x DVD +-RW Drive
200 GB HD
Direct X 9.0C
DVD Shrink 3.2 (latest)

I've even used dvddecryter to decode the dvd but dvdshrink still crashes. And now when I use any software that compresses video in any way it'll either freeze or shutdown the computer. Programs that used to work fairly well like Intervideo DVD Creator 2, Adobe Premiere (just gets an error), virtual dub (freezes), TMpeg (I think that's what it's called; freezes).
I haven't noticed any over heating (it get's warm but never over the bar). When using Adobe Encore it would just get errors and nothing would happen. But when I tried it on my laptop I got simular errors until I uninstalled the ac3 codec then everything worked fine. But DVDshrink works fine on my laptop no matter what. It just used to work so much faster and better on my PC before things got weird. I really don't want to reformat my PC if that's at all possible (other simular threads have done this and it's didn't help at all).
I've tried testing the CPU with some software called CPU burn - it got an error when I tried 10 minutes of testing and when I left it on for over an hour my computer just shuts down. I'm hoping it's not the CPU, is there a recommended method of testing this. Is there a software that can locate a software conflict if I have one (sounds science fiction I know but).
Sorry, I know there's other threads like this one but I thought I'd try this. Any help would be great thanks.

It sounds like heat from what you said. When the heat goes above a pre-set limit the OS will turn the computer off to keep it from burning up the MOBO and CPU. You can try Memtest: http://www.memtest86.com/. If this is what it is the blowing out the dusk and installing another fan might help. Take the side off and make sure the fans on the Power Supply, Video card and CPU are working .

I would also d/l a free Registry Cleaner and clean the registry as conflicts can also cause this. You can Google for the Free Registry Cleaner

I thought it was the heat too but I can play some pretty demanding games like FEAR and Quake 4 and it's never shut down once. I've downloaded memtest but haven't tried it yet it looked like it ran off of command lines and such. I have norton utilities and have ran all the tests and Norton Windoctor should fix any Registry issues. I've defragged and ran Norton Speeddisk and still no luck. I'll try opening the side panel of the PC and see if the heat is the issue. I'm also going to try and install Nero Ultra and try compressing DVD's with that. The only thing is that even if I find an alternative to DVDshrink I'd still have issues with all the video compression. That's why I think it might be a software issue. And I used to get a blue screen that would have an error number but now my computer just shuts down. Any suggestions?

I don't know what the problem is but i've been having the same issues I thought it might be a new video graphics card i purchased but i removed it and am still having the problem, i've been using shrink for a while too without any issues until about a month ago hopefully someone here can help us out. I have a P4 with about 1.7gb of ram a 2.8 processor and 160gb hd.

crimson99,
If it was sitting in front of me I could w/ enough time figure out what is wrong. Your OS is shutting the computer down for some reason. You might need to carry t to the local PC Dr. and have them look at the system.

Lets try this first. Is your MOBO capable of doing graphics w/o the video card. If so uninstall(remove the card from the computer) the video card and connect to the MOBO. Now try Shrink. If it works then the problem is the video card. This is a longshot but worth trying before you have to carry it to the Dr.

dpsalmist,
Welcome to the forum
We need more info. Read Crimson99's 1st post and give us your Systems Spec's info like he did. The more info we have the better chance we have in curing the problem

I'm sorry, what is MOBO? Is that short for motherboard? So you think the issue lies with the video card? I wouldn't mind if it were hardware cause I still have a warrenty.
When I used to get the blue screen with the error message I tried a search on google for what it was and couldn't find the same error code. I don't thing my motherboard has a video out. I think it's pretty dependant on my nvidia 6800. Is there an ultimate hard ware checking software out there?

Thanks again Car.Mike

crimson99,
Mobo = Motherboard like you thought. If it is under warranty there is a conflict that you need to get resolved. Let the warranty people look at it after you talk to them and tell them what it is doing

I just ran a stabilty program I got from the net and it was testing various processes by the CPU like mmx and ran for about 20 minutes then I got a blue error screen with nv4_mini.sys address F6EE34F6
Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Any idea? Sounds like a nvidia driver. If it's just software wouldn't that be easier than messing with the hardware? I'll also give my manufacturer a call about the warrenty. The only thing is I kinda need the computer for work.

Just did a Google on: nv4_mini.sys . It could be part of Nvidia and also part of Windows or could be worse. Google on it but I would first uninstall the card then use a free registry cleaner and clean that next. Then re-boot and then re-install the new drivers and see if that helps. There also might be info at the Nividia site and they also might have a forum that you can take a look at

Hey,

I tried to update the bios and the motherboard drivers and windows would start and then in under a minute it would get a blue screen error and have to be restarted. I tried uninstalling in safe mode but safe mode crashed too. So then I tried to do a system restore and then when windows was loading it would stop saying that windows was missing an important file system in the system32 directory (it looked like a nvidia file). There was also a hpzuis.sys file error that kept showing up. I couldn't get into safe mode either. I called my system manufacturer and they said that I'd have to reinstall windows and lose everything unless I downloaded my files to another harddrive. So I decided to get another hard drive (only because CompUSA had a sale). I reinstalled windows on the new hard drive and began reinstalling my software. When it came to the software for the nvidia nforce 3 drivers, then I would get an error and eventually got really mad and reinstalled windows again. This time I didn't up date the nforce 3 drivers but just the Nvidia video card drivers. Everythings been running smoothly. I installed DVDshrink and it worked. I've shrunk 3 DVD's so far and no problem. The only thing I've noticed is that when my CPU gets hotter that 84 degrees F it's more likely to get an error that crashes a program. Is there something I can do software wise that would keep my CPU from heating up so fast? If not software what kind of hard ware would be the best at keeping my AMD 55FX cool?

crimson99,
84 degrees F is not hot at all. Right now mine is running 84,82 and 82 degrees on the Processor and 2 zones w/in the computer. I think you are talking about Celsius ( at least I hope so). Install another fan inside the computer to keep it cooler. The fans are about $10.00+ and do a good job

It's definately Farenheit (spellcheck mercy). What's overheat speed then if mines fine? I've got 2 fans (one in one out) a single fan on the power supply, single fan plus heatsink on processor, and one fan on the videocard. Has anyone had any issues with AC3 audio encoding. It seems to interfere with adobe encore could it cause conflicts with other applications that use video compression, such as dvdshrink?

crimson99,
Mine overheats at about 154 degrees F and I also have never had a problem w/ the AC3 codec. When I Encode or Transcode a movie it will heat up to about 116 Degrees F. I really think your unit needs to go to the PC Dr. for a checkup as it should not cutoff at that low of a temp as you have verified all of the fans are running. Your temp checking program might be off so uninstall it and re-boot and then re-install it and see if the readings improve.
