I'm currently experiencing extremely long back up times. Before it would take @ 30 mins. to back up a movie. Now it say 300+ hrs. to back up. My computer has a 2.5 gig processor, I have McAfee virus scan and virus gaurd, Ad Aware. No viruses or spyware found. All other programs run fine except DVD Shrink. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, same result. Is there something I can do.

If no virus or spyware, then suggest run pc clean up and defrag to improve speed.

I strongly recommend you to get the below programs/softwares and run them in "Safe Mode" after you've successfully installed them on your system.

CCleaner (free)
Ad-Aware SE Personal (free)
SpyBot Search & Destroy (free)
AVG Free Edition (free)
Microsoft AntiSpyware (free)
HiJackThis (free - be very extreme careful of what you delete)
Then run any of your desire Anti-Virus programs that you've installed on your system.

Once that process is done, then we'll talk about DMA issues -- that is if your DMA is Off or in PIO Mode instead of ULtra DMA Mode.

I checked, run in low priority mode was already checked. Alkohol what's DMA's and safe mode. And if I run anti-spyware and anti-virus software, if a virus or spyware is found does it delete vital files to get rid of the virus or spyware?

I said to run the below programs/applications in "Safe Mode/Boot" only, once you've completed downloaded them and installed them on your computer. Then disconnect from the "internet" and now run them in "Safe Mode or Safe Boot".

(To run your computer in "Safe Mode/Boot for Windows XP")

1) click on START, RUN then type msconfig and hit OK
2) click on BOOT.INI and put a [check mark] on \SAFEBOOT and click OK
3) now your computer should restart automatically.
4) now run the below programs/applications to wipe out any spywares, adwares, virus, trojans, etc.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 AVG Free Edition

http://www.reviewlocator.com/download-77/ Microsoft AntiSpyware (free)

What is DMA = Direct Memory Access. If one/any or two of your DMA (including DVD burner/DVD-ROM's driver and IDE Controller's Channel driver) is in PIO Mode or Off Mode, then your computer will "rip, transcode, encode/compress and burn" really really slow. To enable your DMA back On or into Ultra DMA Mode, follow the below guide to troubleshoot/uninstall and see if you're able to bring them back On.

((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" its driver ?for Win XP users? by alkohol))

Here are some helpful pictures for references.

A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER," left click on "PROPERTIES"

B) left click on "HARDWARE," left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"

C) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

D) double left click on either ?Primary? or ?Secondary IDE Channel?

E) left click on "DRIVER," left click on "UNINSTALL"

You will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system," just click "OK," now "SHUTDOWN" or "Restart" your computer
F) once you restarted your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

**NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "Uninstall" it from the ?DVD/CD-ROM Drives?

****at Device Manager****
(A) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
(B) double left click on your DVD burner or your DVD-ROM drive
(C) click on "DRIVER," "UNINSTALL," "OK" and then "Shutdown" or "Restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!

Enjoyed it..!!

@alcohol

from another thread:

it says DMA if available, but under current transfer mode it says NOT APPLICABLE.
My system says this for both the primary and secondary. Would this be normal? If not what do you think is at issue?

Appreciate it.

I am new to the DVD burning universe, my computer is a few years old, I have 320 MB of RAM and an 801 Mz procesor. It takes me about 2 hours to rip a DVD to my hard drive with Shrink and another almost 2 hours to burn it with Nero. I can live with it, but I am wondering if I upgraded my RAM (I can upgrade up to 768 MB) it would speed up the process or if my processor is just to slow no matter how much ram I have. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I made sure I am in DMA mode.

@1drew76

Welcome to AD!

You could add more RAM but the improvement won't be that noticeable. You need a faster processor. In my sig below, you can see what I have, but I want to get the AMD Athlon XP 64. I just like AMD better than Intel. These days you need the P4 or similar with at least 2G proc. speed and at least 512MB-DDR(double-data-rate) RAM and one that you can multi-task efficiently on, something like HT(hyper-thread)Technology. Burning movies uses most of a computers resources to do so. In the 4hrs. it takes you to produce 1 dvd, I can do 8, even more if it's just the main title! Take your time, don't over extend your finances. Save up and get the one you want. I'm going to build one that will be a multi-media WHALE! I'm taking my time and saving my money. When I'm ready, there'll probably be new and improved technology out and I'll be like a kid in a candy store. Good luck!

Thank you very much, I appreciate the advice. I am going to do just that, I can burn DVD's, takes forever but that is ok, I won't rush into a machine, I'll wait and get one with the specs I want.

thanks again!
