I successfully made my first backup of a movie, sort of. We got Polar Express for the grandsons, and I figured the best thing to do was to spend less than 50 cents on a blank DVD that will make a good replaceable movie when it gets gummed up with peanut butter and jelly. I used DVD Shrink to remove extraneous stuff and compress, and that then used Nero Burning v7 to burn the DVD. That was on my main computer. I brought it over to the laptop which runs Power DVD and it ran just fine. Then I held my breath as I inserted it into our old Panasonic player, DVD-X410. The Panasonic didn't recognize the DVD. Though I have no understanding of -R and +R, I suspect the problem is that I used a DVD -R from a stack that I purchased for data backup. The main question here is which blank DVD should I use for this purpose assuming my daughter also has an older DVD player? Or is there some other way to make a backup that can be read by most DVD players?

Thanks,
Linda in Virginia

You are on the right track. I would purchase some good DVD+R media such as Maxell, verbatim, Sony, Taiyo Yuden and then in Nero set the Booktype for the DVD+R media to DVD-ROM and burn as usual. This will make the backup play in most any player.

I am including a thread for you to read about booktyping so that you can understand what I am referring to.

http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

Now I do not have Nero myself but you can booktype in it. Someone will explain how it is done for you.

Cheers and welcome to AD.

Thanks Ruger. I'm on my way to your links. I know nothing about Booktype and assumed DVD Shrink would take care of that since its use of Nero is transparent. I didn't really pay much attention to what I did when I used the software, just blundered my way through it without really knowing what was going on.

Thanks for the quick response. I've been using Ridata DVD blanks and am impressed, no problems so far. I also use Ridata SD and CF cards in my camera with nary a problem. Do you have an opinion about that brand of DVD?

Thanks,
Linda in Virginia

I have never used Ridata so I don't know about the quality of it.

I have found another guide for you to look at. It is for Nero.

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/burn%20with%20nero.pdf

I recommend Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell media. Never Memorex as we call it here Memosux. Crap media even though the name is great.

To Booktype you will have to use DVD+R media. I alway buy the 8x and burn at 4x. Not any faster until you become familiar with your process.

Thanks for that. The Nero Booktype link from the page you originally gave me didn't work. I took a quick look at the Nero tutorial you just gave me, and I'm wondering if I really need to do anything with Nero at all. I guess I won't know until I get a few +R disks to play with. I must have told Shrink that I was using DVD-R though. Are you saying that even if I use +R and tell Shrink about it that I still have to do something with Booktype in Nero? Sorry to be so dense. I can build a computer from the case up and design web sites, but this is all new to me.

DVD Shrink while great by itself is not a burner...it does not have a burn engine. The program that you are using to burn your DVD will be the one to have the booktyping ability. Nero or DVD Decrypter or IMGBurn are good burners, that have enable the booktyping option. I have done it in Nero but I can't remember how...it is on my laptop, and unfortunately I'm on my desktop.

I believe that you open the burning Rom, and look for an icon that looks like a HDD or optical drive. Go to options close to the bottom and there lies your booktype option. As I said, I'm doing this from memory so it may not be correct.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, I have not personally used Nero so I can't help as far as setting the booktype in the program Nero. There is a Nero forum here at AD though and I am sure that one of those kind folks will help you out with that facet of Nero.

I do know that once you begin booktyping your backups you will not have any problems playing them back in whatever player you choose. (Knock on wood). Of course, burn errors may cause different results so try and stay away from having those.

Not all dvdrw drives are capable of bitsetting/booktyping. Give us the make and model of your dvdrw drive and we'll go from there.

Thanks to all. I'll go over to the Nero forum and see what I can learn. My burners are both Sony, I think DRU500 and 800.

Your 500 is not capable but your 800 is a rebadged liteon SOHW-1693S and is capable. I would suggest useing the liteon booktype utility. Here is a link to the utility and there is also a link to a usage guide on the page. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 You can use dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ to verify that the discs are dvd-rom after they are burned.

As Mort81 said. You will definately be pleased with your backups once you begin using the booktype utility.

Happy burning.

the way i do my booktyping in Nero (Burning Rom) is via 'Recorder/Choose Recorder/Option' - set to auto (it will only set +R discs to dvd-rom and won't complain about the -R discs, ie all will just be transparent and work a treat.

Creaky, that's an easy fix. Now for a total newbie-to-movie-backup question. If I want a backup to play on all DVD players, once I've set the Recorder option to auto, do I have to then buy +R media to write to? There's no way to make my -R media to be read by all DVD players?

Thanks,
Linda

that's right..

..i'm primarily a -R man myself, but only as that's what i started out with for the first 1000 or so burns i did!, then i tried +R just to see what all the fuss was about. booktyping works great but as i have no problems with -R it's all a muchness to me :)
