Hello Guys,
I've stored up many important files (media files) on my blank VERBATIM DVDs and HP DVDs.

I acess these DVDs everyday. I have kept them in jewel cases.

I want to know that will these DVDs be readable forever (although they will be free from any physical damage), or should I make copies of it after a certain period of time?

If storing data on DVDs is not recommended then what is the best way to do so?

your on the right track half way.
the media verbatim is very good, and especially the ones labeled Advanced AZO dye right on the label.
tere have been many articles on this before, and from what i remember, the media should last well up to and over 100 years.
a few tips i'd add in, keep them in a cool dark place, or in the case itself. avoid heat, direct sunlight, try not to scratch them (handle them from the outer edges or center ring) and lastly, dont use cheap media.
hp is junk media...

there are lots of members in here that have their own preference, but the majority will rule on verbatim, taiyo yuden, fuji, sony, maxell..... (MIJ) with the exception being verbatim (the only one thats made in taiwan, but excellent media)
you will get more help here from others, this i know.
but the media i listed and tips will get you going, and your data/info will last years and years... no need to reburn often..

and welcome to after dawn !

Thanks so much, that was realy a quick reply, thank you once again

VERBATIM rules, but I'm from India and I've got only a few of these and moreover here in India, no body holds stock for VERBATIM media (I KNOW THATS STRANGE, BUT IT'S TRUE)

Is HP really bad? Well it costs me around 1$ (Rupees 45/- here in India) each DvD! and I've tried my hands on SONY as well, but the data was not readable at all on the very first attempt.

By the way the HP DvD case says Limited lifetime warranty and it says MADE IN INDIA.

If possible list outsome websites which can ship VERBATIM DvD's in India. Well my budget can't cross 2$ per DvD with the jewel box.

Thans again!

That's funny I was told BURNED media will only last several years, no where near a hundred though. And if he accesses it daily then he's exposing it to heat daily. So will it still last 'a hundred' years?

Note-I know you were exagerating w/ the 100 years thing, but honestly over 10 years?

@ glue

i would not say it if it were not so..
it's here somewhere in the forums, i just cannot recall where.
it has been a big debate on how long and such, but i remember the thread has a link to it where extensive tests have been done to say otherwise
check here, and scroll down to the paragraph titled "what is the life expectancy of a dvd"
for some reason, i cannot copy and paste that paragraph, so i'll paste the link instead

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

note, if your lucky (they say) it will last a century, but decades is very common..

Heck in ten years we will probably have some different way to store memory and cd/dvd's will go the way of eight tracks. i can't imagine what there will be going on in 10 years?? i remember when i was a kid happy to have am radio:)

This thread is something I've been interesting in learning more about as well. For the most part, I keep all my backups stored in slim jewel cases in a bookshelf...does this sound like as safe a way as possiblel to store them? For some lower priority flicks that I figure I may never watch again I keep them in a CD book with no case so I'd be a little more leery of those, but I was curious what you would recommend for storage?

I keep my DVD movies in DVD cases stored vertically.
Because if you store them flat and there exposed to heat
it can warp the disk.

Thnaks for your advice, but here in India, I do not get VERBATIM branded DvDs. I guess I'll have to adjust with the DvDs I get.

The options I have are. HP, LG, SONY(its crap here), SAMSUNG, MOSER BAER.

I really can't say anything about SONY unless I see the label. Sony made in Japan is one of the best media you can buy out there. If it's made in Taiwan then not so much. But if there is no POSSIBLE way of you knowing then get the SONY anyways, b/c there might be a small chance that it's MIJ.

@rushab143 - you need to give us the media info as per one of gear79's replies above, ie download dvd identifier, use it to 'identify' one of those discs and paste the results here

getting a tad bit touchy there BUDDY !!

but you need to identify the media........ meaning, pop a disk in the drive, use that link to I.D. the media, the post the results.

a copy of what you bought, a link to what you have means SQUAT...
the unique ID code from the blank media will reveal all !
