- the burner still can't recognise that disc properly, still no 3line paragraph. so basically the blank discs are newer than the firmware knows what to with

creaky, I didn't mean to give bad advice to Pariah, I didn't even look at that line to be honest. Why? Because he mentioned he made all the changes that you recommended, that's why and that he also managed to make a good burn after those changes. He is also telling us that he is able to burn to some certain percentage of the disk. That is the reason I recommended what I did. Here is where I could be wrong. My understanding is that if your burner doesn't recognise the media you will not be able to burn it whatsoever. Is that correct?
Merry Christmas !

@dr_no - no worries, i didn't see any bad advice LOL. when it comes to logfile stuff i tend to skip all the non-logfile stuff ie poster's explanations/replier's comments of what they think the problem is (for instance) and just concentrate on the actual logs.

Merry Xmas to all

Well, enrage had a good idea - I'll supplement it. If you have a backup drive I would image my working drive to the backup drive and perform a clean format for your system.

If I'm understanding correctly it is a new drive and you're still getting the same problems. This could mean one of two things - the new drive does not recognize the media, in which case just get new media and try again, or there is software that is impeding on the burn cycle.

Now, short of reformatting the drive, do you have the latest firmware for the drive? If the latest firmware is not installed the drive should automatically drop down to 1x burn. In this case I think this is not happening since you're getting partially completed burns.

So, there are alot of variables right now that need to be controlled. What needs to be done is to level the playing field so that nothing else can be in the way of the burns.

This is what I recommend:

1. Image your current system to a backup device.
2. Physically unplug all connections to the internet
3. Reformat your C: drive with a clean copy of XP
4. Install only your burner's drivers (this would be automatic unless the manufacturer has it's own drivers from a separate disk)
5. Install only a ripper and DVD Shrink (don't install Nero until you've verified everything is OK with the test burn)
6. Don't install any other software (including firewall and virus protection since your internet is unplugged)
7. Test a rip and burn

Now, if the same thing happens with the media try another media and try the burn again. If you get the same type of problem then you know it is not the media but the burner itself. It is a new drive so I wouldn't think it was the drive but the media. It's a clean system as well so it wouldn't be anything system-related either. Again, it's been narrowed down to the burner or the media.

Personally, I think it's a combination with something that is currently installed on your system and the media.

I've had situations where I would indicate to the burning software that I wanted to burn at 4x only to get 1x burn. Upgrading my firmware corrected this, however, this seems a bit more involved in your case.

Please post an update if you find that any of this "advice" came in handy!
