Hi folks,
I haven't seen an Article on this lately ... so here is my Question ...
Q1: Is a SHARPIE really a Non-Solevant Based Marker?
Q2: Can I also use a Sharpie for my CD's? I don't have the time or the patience for Labels!
THANKS!

OK Great ... TAHNK YOU all for quick reply.
One more Question and I will shut up on this item ... I am using Sharpie's NEW product that it is aimed at folks like us called "CD/DVD Marker" and it is a two sided marker pen ... one side is "Fine" and the other side is "Ultra Fine" head. I personally like the Ultra Fine side. I have also used their old style with "Extra Fine Point". Now the Questions
Q1: Does it matter which one to use?
Q2: what is each of you folks PREFERENCE on the Tips?
THANKS AGAIN!

1. NO, shouldn't matter at all, depends on how YOU like it to appear on your disc...whether it be FINE or ULTRA FINE, etc...

2. as long as ink comes out, i don't have a preference, i used multi-colored Sharpies, so, whichever color i feel is "good" for the day, i just use that color..all of mine are the "normal" nothing fancy out of the box kind...mine says, "FINE POINT"...so, i guess that it's not "ultra" fine and it's not too fat either~ :) lol...

happy marking! Sharpies are sweet

I used to use Sharpie, but now I'm all into Inkjet printable media (gotta love my Epson R300), plus it looks more professional in results.

DVD's have both a lacquer as well as a polymer top coat so it's perfectly safe to use a Sharpie marker, which is my preferred method. I have a lightscribe but the disks are a tad expensive and I am not gonna put out the bucks for a printer, so it's Sharpie for me.

I have audio CDs with sharpie pen labelling I burned 8 years ago that still work fine.

Also have DVD movies I burned and marked from 4 years ago that still play fine.

Matter of a fact, I've never used anything but sharpie pens to mark optical media since I first started burning in 1998. I think it's an "urban legend" that somehow the sharpie pen somehow degrades the media over time...

Hi folks (Kivory, Grampaw, Alkohol, and the rest of you wonderful folks), THANKS for your answer on Sharpie.
I have another matter that I need an Answer to before I get myself in trouble. On an Australian Forum I read that STORING DVD's and Especially CD's (since they are Thinner than CD's) in the CD Wallets like I have been doing it is a BIG MISTAKE ... since over few months or 1 year plus storage, the pressure from the DVDs and the Pages will WARP the DVD's and CD's and make them UN-PLAYABLE. I use CD Wallets like "CD PRoject" "Case Logic" "Targus" or whatever half-way decent Brand on Sale.
Q1: Am I storing my DVD's & CD's incorrectly?
Q2: What STORING METHOD do you folks recommend? Guys like "Kivory 666" who has approximately 4000 plus DVD's, or Grampaw who seem to have a bunch of them also ... how do you guys STORE YOURS?
Q3: I have seen online that some folks are using "CD/DVD MASS STORAGE CASES" which store the CD/DVDs in these Sleeves VERTICALLY ... so they DO NOT press against each other ... but the Boxes store 300 CDs and I think only 150 DVDs (since DVDs are Thicker) and the Boxes cost like $60 + Tax + Shipping ... so may be about $70Plus Dollars. HAS ANY OF YOU FOLKS USED THESE and how do you like it?
PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS! THANKS!

Not only am I not buying a new printer just to print labels, but I don't have the patience for making labels. With a Sharpie, I just write down what it is that I backed up, then I'm done with it.

@gonwk

i have all my originals stored upright (vertically) in the cases i bought them in, on these shelves that i built in a dedicated room~ :)

as to my backups, i too use a binder, actually, about a dozen binders, that hold approx. 240 each~ :) my wife bought them for me locally, don't know where and i've never had problems with my backups as long as i store them vertically...it relieves the weight and pressure of "stacking" them on top of each other~ :)

i think for the most part, as long as you don't place added weight ON TOP of your dvds, you should be fine...AND using QUALITY MEDIA will definitely extend the LIFE of your backup too~ :) i've used some poor quality media in the past that were well taken care of, but, due to the quality of dye...it became unplayable about 3 months after the burn...so, the INITIAL quality of the dvd media burned is important to a certain degree.

i don't spend money on expensive, fancy cases/boxes for my backups, only because i PERSONALLY feel the money is better spent on media..mind you i buy media in BULK, so...it would take me TOO long to print covers for everything, hence why i take the Sharpie route~ :)

that's just my 2 cents and how I personally store my backups, everyone has their OWN way~

@ kivory666, just a quick question for you as doc ty, do you know through your Ty rep why we are not able to buy them at regular retail outlets. I mean everyone is advised to use them, but at retail outlets they are disguised under other brand names, or you have to buy online poorly marked packageing no coloured label etc just a cakebox. Why don't they sell them themselves directly on the open market like all the other makers. With such a great product they should sell like hotcakes.

Framit I been wondering the same thing. At BestBuy the employee that helped me find the Vertatims 16X AZO DVD+Rs knew his stuff. We got into a discussion about it and I made no sense.

Hi folks,
Kivory666, at the risk me sounding Stupid (oh what the heck, I rather get it right) ... how do you mean "Storing cd-Wallet case Vertically" ... You mean I stand the cd-wallet Case on it's leg ... you know assuming it is a 8X11 paper and you set it standing at it's 8" edge or at it's 11" edge!?!? I am confused.
By the way, I have been stacking my cd-wallet cases (208's, 224's, and NOT larger than that) on top of each other like 3 or 4 on top of each other ... since I have a ton of back-ups ... like 6 or 7 cd-wallets of dvd's.
I have also heard some folks hang them by their ring-holder ... I sure as heck don't have enough hanging room in my closet to hang the cd-wallet down and THAT would definitley relieve any pressure off of the dvd's.
THANKS for you folsk Replies as usual.
