I keep reading that for movies such as Fantastic 4 that people have had better luck with the movie if they re-author it. I have tried 3 different times with Mr. & Mrs Smith and I figured it worked fine...I watched it today (my copy) and it worked all the way until they were on the freeway at the end...then it glitched, froze and went back to the beginning. So, as of right now I am analysing Fantastic 4, before I get to the burn portion...what do I need to do in re-author? I can't seem to find a tutorial for it. Thanks in advance!!!

This is actually for putting 2 disc together but it's all the same, plus/minus a few steps.

Your problem may lie with your burn speed, media used or buring to the end of the disc. Which brand are your using? Burn speed? Firmware up to date on your drive?
You can also set your target size to 4300 in shrink so that it doesn't burn to the end of the disc.
I had no problem w/ Fantastic 4 - did whole movie - blanked out some special features - playback was fine.

Simple DVD Backup Steps with Shrink and Decrypter

First create a folder for your HD backup. Try to put it someplace where you won?t forget it (i.e. C:/All DVD Work).

Next download DVD Decrypter (link below) and under mode select ?ISO, Write?. Un-tick the box that says, ?verify?. Where it says, ?source?, you?ll leave that blank, as DVD Decrypter will find the location of your backed up DVD file automatically. Next, where it says ?Destination?, select the drive where your burner resides. Next , in the lower right corner under ?Settings? select 4x for a write speed max.. (Burning a movie faster than 4x has caused problems for some people) Feel free to close DVD Decrypter; DVD Shrink will open it when it needs it.

The link for the newest DVD Decrypter -

Download DVD Shrink (link below). Open it and click ?Edit?, then click ?Preferences? on this page we?re going to select ?Target DVD Size? as custom and set the size to 4360MB - we do this to make extremely sure that our disc isn?t too large. Then under the ?File I/O? tab un-tick ?Enable burning with Nero? then click ?OK?.

Place your original DVD in your DVD-ROM drive and a DVD blank in your burner?s drive. I am currently using Ritek Ridata, Fuji +R made in Japan(Taiyo Yuden), Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim blanks which you can get for approx. .20 - .30 each (+R).)

Click on ?Open Disk?.

Before you rip with Shrink, you have the option of selecting ?Full Disk? or selecting ?Re-author?. Most of the time before I rip with Shrink, I select re-author and then double-click on the Main Movie (usually Title 1). This moves over only the main movie to the left to be ripped. I don't even bother with the menus, as you can still select chapters with your player.

Now, click on ?Backup!?. Take just a second and under ?Target Device? go to ?Select backup target? once there, select ?ISO image file and burn with DVD Decrypter?. (Note: If you only have a burner drive you will select ?ISO image file?) Finally, where it says ?Select target image file?, browse till you find your created folder (i.e. C:/All DVD Work) for your backup and click ?Save?. That?s it! Click ?OK? and DVD Shrink burns that ISO image to your HD. It then opens DVD Decrypter and has it burn the ISO image to your waiting blank DVD. (Unless you only have a burner, in that case you will then place your blank into the burner, open Decrypter, in the source section go to the file ?all dvd work? and open the movie that you want to burn and simply click on the green arrow by the disk in the lower portion.)

P.S. You will find it easy if you place a shortcut on your desktop for ?All DVD Work?. This way you can open it and empty it often as the movies stay there, in case you need to backup again. However the more you keep in there, the quicker you run out of HD space and that can be a problem for people who don?t have a large hard drive.

Also don?t use your PC for anything at all while it?s backing up, including turning off anti-virus, screen savers, and all other programs that might be running in the background. This also means turning off auto updates on your programs such as windows, anti-virus, etc., you can always update programs manually. You don?t want a program connecting to the net while you are burning a movie.

Good Luck

THANKS GUYS!!!

Since I really do not care about the menues or the special features...Under the compression settings I just put DTS for the sound and it took the compression setting to 93.7%...I hope that helps me out. As far as setting the target size to 4300...what does that mean and where do I go to do that?

The target size is what shrink will reduce the original file to. By changing to 4300 or 4360 you will not be burning to the edge of the disc. The end of the disc is where problems happen - skipping freezing etc or burn problems.
How to can it in shrink - from oneacer's post above:

Thanks. Well I have spent just about all of last night and today trying to get a good copy of Fan4. I did it all in the re-author mode which I think is perfect for me...I do not care about the other stuff. But, I went through about 6 blanks trying to get it right. My last attempt I ran it through DVD Decrypter first and then through shrink along with changing the target size from whatever to 4300. Then instead of maximum on the burn process, I did it at the 3.1 (I believe)setting. Probably total overkill and more or less not needing to have done it...I went and put it in the player and it still glitched and froze on me. I about threw the copy acrossed the room when my wife said to put it in our player in the bedroom...and it worked perfectly. Needless to say, I am going to blame all of my problems on my home DVD palyer....

Yep - dvd players can be picky on what media they like - to cut down on problems only use good quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim and keep the burn speed down.

There is a fantastic guide for using DVDdecrypter and shrink in my signature block. It is a pdf format so you can print it out. I did and since getting the process down I have not had a failure.

Another thing that I would mention is that you should purchase quality media. Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Maxell. Keep away from Memorex (commonly known at this forum as Memosux). Cheap and bad quality.

You can purchase quality media for the same price as memosux, and sometimes cheaper if you follow the sales.

Cheers.

9mm....thanks for the help. This forum has helped me out alot. I have learned so much this last week. As far as quality disks are concerned, I have been using the Sony DVD+R's that I get from Sams club. 100 for $28.00 That is all I have used since I have started with my back ups. My wife even told me that some of our hard copies have been glitching and freezing...Then she reminded me that our player is pushing 5 years old....oh well, time for a new one.

Is your burner capable of booktyping? If so, you can booktype those DVD+Rs to DVD-ROM and they should play in any DVD player.
If you're not sure if your burner can booktype, you should post the model type of your burner and someone here will let you know if it can and if you need help booktyping, we're here to help with that as well.
Use quality media, burn at 4x and booktype those DVD+Rs to DVD-ROM. If you do this, you shouldn't have any problems.

Yes it is...but that is not the problem. I read through so many different things and I read on one of the guides that I should turn off the booktype dvd-rom thing...so I did. So far since I have learned my main player is done for, all of the copies I have made work 100% on the player in my bedroom.

Can you provide a reference to the "turn off DVD booktype thing"? I would like to read it.

I would question it as commercial DVD are generally DVD-ROM format and play in anything.

9mm...as far as a reference goes, uh yeah it was a picture that had that little box not checked. I was going off the pictures where I could not understand what they were talking about (-;

I went to Wal-mart and picked up a Phillips DVD player for $58.00 tonight. Brought it to the house and hooked it all up...put in my copy of Fantastic 4 and it was flawless. To double check, I played it in my old Sony DVD player and it glitched. So I believe my problems are solved. You guys are awsome with your knowledge and I thank you for your help. I will keep checking in for more information here and there. Right now I am going to read up on DVDFab platinum. A friend of our sent us a link for a 30 day free trial. Gotta learn. Thanks again!!!

Happy that you got the issue worked out. Sometimes it's as simple as a player problem. I am going to get a new player after the first myself.

Merry Christmas.
