I use DVD Shrink for all my DVDs. After I hit the backup, it goes to the decryption, prior to burn, and it displays inormation in the viewing box. I noticed that some dvds decryption rate is around 6200 KB/s and others are as low as 2900 KB/s. Is this type of variation normal and is there something I can do to get the rate up to the 6200 range on all dvds.
Thanks,
Larry

I've only noticed this fluxuation when I have had other things going on in the background. Make sure you have everything that you don't need running turned off.

If you compress more, it reads slower.

What sly_61019 said is pretty much all there is to it. I did a movie from the 50s and I was up to about 16,000KB How much RAM you've got will also be a factor. To free up as much memory as possible I recommend enditall to shut down every thing. Also your quality settings will add about an extra half hour or so.

Thanks for all the responses. I usually dont run anything else when using the dvd software. But if i remember correctly the higher speeds do come when the compresion is less.
Thanks and have a merry Christmas,
Larry

My videophile buddies tell me the "complexity" (action, color variations, and etc.) of the movie can affect the rate. For me "Fargo" encoded at 17,000 KB/s; Serenity at 5,300 or so, and others down in the 1,700 - 2,300 range. Maybe because there was so much white in "Fargo" and very litle action did it run so fast. Maybe my buds were pulling my leg...dunno.

5,300 - 6,100 seems to be pretty normal for me and DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter have always been almost the same.

What bugs me is different rates for the same DVD on identical machines.
