Have you guys ever had trouble with DVD Shrink It getting hung up while it is burning? I usually don't have a problem but since I've replaced my DVD burner it has been getting hung up in the burn process. Copying is ok I beleive so far. When I go to re-author and burn the dvd it will get through the encrypt/decrypt process and then it does the lead in and cacheing, and then through the burn process it will just stop. It won't give errors or anything like that - it just stops progressing. I have to close out of the program and pop the dvd out because it never errors out. I left one day and it was stuck on like 17% for over 5 hours.

I know that sometimes when i try to do other things while shrink it is running - even just like opening windows explorer, it can hang the program and it won't do anything. Has anyone experienced problems like these before??

I'm also looking into my burner to see if it is the cause - maybe I am trying to burn too fast??? 16x is what i'm burning at.

You need to change your burn speed to 4x. I was having the same problem until I lowered my burn speed. You might make sure your new dvd burner supports the media you are using also. We had to buy a new burner for our computer because we could only burn dvds on sony media. I hope this helps.

As gabby suggested, it is only recommended to burn at 4x. Also ensure that your firmware is up to date for your burner, this could also be the source of your problems.

If you've replaced your burner the first thing you should do is check and see if there is a new firmware update for the burner. Firmware updates provide greater/extended media support for the burner, this alone might solve your problem. AS always use good quality reliable media, keep write speed at 4X, and try to keep file sizes for single layer media to approx 4.3gb...

I usually use DVD Shrink in combinations with DVDFab Decrypter and Nero to burn. Since Shrink is no longer updated and new copy right protections have emerged, it's been hard to use Shrink alone without help from other 3rd party programs. Then again like the rest of the guys just said, it's probably a compatability issue with your media and the 16X burn speed. I'll take an accurate slow burn over a high speed coaster any day. I've got a 16X DL burner and the fastest i've burned is 8X because my standalone player is kinda finiky with 16X media. Just my 2 cents anyways, take care..Later

Now when you say burn at 4x, do you mean that Shrink It needs to burn stuff at 4x, or my media needed it.

DVDshrink is not a burner so it can't burn your backups. What ever application your are using to burn your backups with (DVDdecrypter for ISO images, Nero, Roxio etc...) is what needs to be set for a write speed of 4X.

lol you wanna bet? I burn most of my DVDs with DVD Shrink. I have DVDD also but i only use it to break encryptions that shrink can't. DVD Shrink v 3.2 can copy to harddrive as well as burn to blank dvd's ;)

As far as I'm aware dvdshrink gives you two option:

option 1: when you press the backup tab you have an option to burn files with dedrypter

option 2: in it's preferences section you can check the option to burn with nero

Either decrypter or nero is called upon by shrink to perform the burning process, but shrink itself cannot.

Quote:
Description

DVD Shrink is software to backup DVD disks. You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your choice, to make a backup copy of any DVD video disk. DVD Shrink does not burn DVDs! The output from DVD Shrink is saved as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn to a DVD-R using separate burning software, such as the software provided with your DVD-R drive.

It seems that everytime there's a burning problem, it's always the media & burning speed at fault. I used DVD Shrink & Nero & never have any problems burning at 8X using 8X media. I ever mentioned in another thread that to ensure a smooth workflow in ripping & burning, your video or DVD file must not be fragmented. It must exists as one single piece. You must do a complete defrag before ripping. I have a dedicated 40Gb partition strictly for video capture & DVD ripping. Before using, I will do a quick format - much faster than defrag.

Oh i see - well you have beat me sir ;)

Danget!! i just updated my firmware and out goes another coaster. This time I tried burning at 8x, its a 16x dvd. Verbatim dvds. I have some 8x ones i bought though that I might try... I just installed the new version of Nero, 6.6 that came with my dvd drive so i'll try doing it with Nero option instead i guess.. We'll see if another coaster comes out lol. This time it got 50% done..

@Exodus12

Yes I would like to bet...how much are you willing to put up?

As stated by johnl123, DVD Shrink is only a transcoding tool, it does not have a burn engine. It relies on either Nero burning Rom or DVD Decrypter or Imgburn for the burning process.

Get back to us in a year and let us know how those Memosux are holding up...those Verbatims are usually considered high quality. Some other quality media would include Taiyo Yuden, and Sony, Fuji, Maxell (made in Japan). Memorex/Imation are considered to be the worst media around. Here is a thread: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/me...

The new 16X Verbatims are all I use. I burn my backups at 16X and they all playback perfectly, but some credit has to be given to my plextor 716A (there's not a better burner on the market).

Get one if you got some spare change lying around!, you'll be glad you did.

So long you have a clean system, totally defrag HDD & sufficent system resources, any media will do. If you can afford more than one DVDRW, go for it. Anyway the prices have been dropping especially when they are made in China. I have a choice of 5 different DVDRW. I may encounter cyclic redundancy in one drive but it works in another.
Nothing to do with the software.

Well I don't know what to tell ya - ever since I had those Verbatims I've had nothing but trouble with them. I may have gotten a bad batch of them.

I tried burning them at 16x, 8x, didn't try 4x because I was tired of burning coasters. After the first two after i upgraded the f/w i just went ahead and tried my other media and the memorex 8x all burned through fine.

I'll go through and read those media posts you linked me though.

So the general thing I'm getting from those posts are that Memorex are just re-branded CMC stuff and the major problem with them is that the burn won't hold on them.

Well what's good then? Because obviously my DVD player doesn't like Verbs... I see TY of course but I don't know where to get those at. I don't really think that I need to have the best quality media anyways beacuse the burner i have apparently isn't the best quality burner but eh it works ;)

Memorex is considered bad because you don't know what you are getting...they use CMC Magnetics to manufacture their discs along with countless other good and bad disc manufacturers, so the problem is when you buy a spindle of discs you don't know what you are getting until you've already made the purchase. CMC Magnetics also makes discs for imation and countless other brands, but are considered to be the cheapest, and lowest quality dye manufacturer in the industry. If you are lucky and get a good initial copy with those CMC discs, you are just that...lucky. As soon as six months down the road you may see deterioration in the dye, until eventually, the copy will be rendered useless.

Here is a nifty tool that tells you who made the discs you are using, it's a free prog and you can get it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

As suggested by johnl123, you should also check to see that your firmware is up to date. If your firmware is not current it may not be able to handle those 16X verbs, and thus be the source of your problem. Here is another free tool for determining the firmware version of your drive: http://flashman.rpc1.org/ about half way down the page it says "what's my firmware?"...that is the one you need. After finding out your firmware version you can go here to see if it is current and download the upgrade: http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

These are very simple suggestions and easy fixes, but can make all the difference when backing up movies.
