taiyo yuden does NOT make DL media at this time... :)

also, some of my burners are NOT DVD-R DL capable, so, i've personally never had a need for the DVD-R DL media...

sorry, can't help you out much here in terms of what you are looking for...but, for DVD+R DL, i strongly recommend Verbatim, made in singapore, VERY HIGH QUALITY DVD+R DL media~

Totally agree with the Verbatim +R DL, I use them and Lov them..
Also they can be Book Typed to DVD-ROM, which makes them more compatable with all players?.

Yeah. I bought two 10 pks yesterday ($20 each)! Don't know why, though... I would REALLY prefer the printables, but they are still rather pricey as compared to single layer. The best price I've seen is $58.00 for 20 online at Dell.com (over $80 per 20 at NewEgg), and I haven't seen them in stores period.... I guess I'll hold on to these two 10 packs until the printables hit stores...

All I'd got to say is "Tai-yo Yu-den ROCK!!" And yes, for DL media, I highly recommend Verbatim DVD+R DL (made in singapore). The Verbs DVD+R DL rank #1 in my book.

Hi there,

Father in law and myself have ordered some

200 x each DVD-R 4x Taiyo Yuden (TYG01) from http://www.blankmedia.ca

DAMN, one of the packs are TYG03, 16x Silver Lacquer DVD-R TY with the hub # GH0000xxx

My TYG01 were GD00000

Can't wait to open the other 3 but no where to stack the, so it will be a surprise in the future :)

I have an older 4x LG-4040B drive, those TYG03 should work on it, but seems some older 4x drive may not work with those new TYG03.

I will need to test this soon, anyway they will get burned in my Dell OEM NEC-3450A so it's all good !

@cougar

IF your older drive has a recent firmware update, you should have NO problems with the TYG03s... :)

naturally, NONE of my 6 drives have problems with the TYG01s, but i also keep my eyes out for ANY and ALL firmware updates associated with each drive...

for your drive to burn the TYG03s properly, "recent/updated" firwmare is a neccessity~ :)

good luck

docTY~

p.s. ur inner hub coding checks out just fine on those TYG03s :)

Hi there,

I have done my tests with the DVD-R TYG03 (16x Media) and here are my results:

Drive / Possible write speed:
-----------------------------

LG-4040B (A304) / 2x

I think it's using a Default Burn Scheme, since it's not recognizing the media as what it is, burn worked 100% at 2x

Dell OEM NEC-3450a (103C) / 2x 4x 6x 8x

NEC-3520a (v3.06) / 2x 4x 6x 8x 12x 16x

The DVD-R TYG03 burned at 2x on the LG-4040B has a quality result of 88% (If Re recall) (PI/PO Scanning with DVDInfoPro on father in law's NEC-3520a)

The DVD-R TYG03 burned at 4x on the NEC-3450a has a quality result of 94% (PI/PO Scanning with DVDInfoPro on father in law's NEC-3520a)

on the newer drives that DO allow faster burning, namely, your NEC 3520a (i have this drive on my 2nd computer as well), i have found from PERSONAL experience that you will get a better quality score burning @8x~ :)

i know you may be hesitant to burn above 4x, but, on MY nec 3520a, i have gotten a 98 quality score burning @8x using Nero cd-speed/drive checking on my litey after the burn...

just something to consider...burning slow on TYG03s has proven WORSE quality scores for me the slower it is burned...but, that's just ME...

Hey kivory666,

Too bad TY don't make RW media, I can't find any :)

What's your opinion on Verbatim DVD+RW or DVD-R ???

I might just try a pack (Cake of 30 DVD+RW Verbatim).

The others I have at home are Fujifilm (Media ID: RICOHJPNW01 )

They are ok, but quality score is not hi on a PI/PO Scan !

Based on http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia if I get 4x ones, I should be ok !

I will be putting this to the test tonight. I am anticipating total agreement, since my TY burn at 4x was poor at best.

Cheers.

Not as good as I had hoped, but this was 8x on the NEC 3550a.

Burned with CloneDVD2. I will be doing another tomorrow using the LG to burn at the same speed. It will be interesting to see the comparison.

Cheers.

@cougar

while i don't have extensive experience with Verbatim's DVD-R format, i do have a few hundred squared away with excellent results...i'm mostly a DVD+R guy, got well over a thousand flawless burns in the 8x and 16x rated speeds, MCC003 and MCC004 respectively.

when buying Verbatim, assuming it's a MCC coded media, you should be JUST FINE~ :) Verbatim uses the advanced AZO dye, just like Taiyo Yuden, so quality control is adhered to under the Verbatim brand... :)

in terms of DVD+RW, i have less than 50 TOTAL and all of mine happen to be 4x Ritek Ridata dvd+rw~ :) i've never had a real need to use DVD+RW, so, my expertise does not lie in that format~ :) my Ritek DVD+RW work just fine, despite my lack of experience with them...i think you will be far fetched to find anything better than the Verbatim 4x DVD+RW anywhere...those SHOULD be very good, i just don't have any to test this theory~ good luck~ you should try to get the 4x ones to be on the "safe side" :)

@9mm

i don't have the latest NECs, i have the old one, 3520a...so, not much i can comment about the burns on the newest models...the newest NEC should be a very good burner, however, with it being so new, i think firmware might need a little while to catch up with that drive.

how are your results burned @8x? on my nec 3520a, it's FAR better than my 4x burns or slower...how did you do?

docTY~

The 8x burn on the NEC is a little better than 93% quality, see three posts above. I will be doing an 8x with the LG next to compare using CloneDVD2. I would assume that the burn engine may have something to do with the quality of the burn as well as the burner.

After that comparison I will be doing imgburns at 8x to see the difference. This is kind of interesting to play with the variables and see where I will get my best quality.

Thanks for the interest. I will keep you updated as I go along.

Cheers.

@kivory666

Thanks for the welcome to ADA status.

Back to the scan issue, I have an interesting link from CD Freaks regarding NEC's.

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=161859

It would seem that these drives provide inferior scan ability. Guess as long as they play it will be okay. I just can't seem to get above 94 on my last several burns with TY media. I scanned two burns done last night and got a 92 and 93 respectively. Movies play fine.

I will probably have to get a benQ or a Plextor next time I need a drive.

Anyhoo, cheers.

@9mm

join the boat about poor scanning abilities...my pioneer is THE SAME WAY, couldn't do an accurate scan if it's life depended on it...i usually scan with either my benq or my liteons for the most accurate results.. :)

i don't own a plextor, but am considering the very newest one once it hits U.S. stores...after hearing Plextor teamed up with Taiyo Yuden in regards to it's media, i'm all for Plextor now~ :)

anyways, play it by ear...if the movies play just fine, good chance that they might scan higher on a diff. drive...guess NECs and Pioneers are notorious for inaccurate scans...that's not just MY opinion, guess a lotta people agree~
