What about DVDFAB Decrypter? Did you ripped it with DVDFAB Decrypter version 2.9.6.6 successfully into your hard drive first? Then open up PgcEdit and browse to your VIDEO_TS that was ripped by DVDFAB Decrypter and continue with the guide from there. You shouldn't be getting with only 2.82GB, you should have the whole/full dvd files (inluding main movie, extras, menu, trailers/previews, etc.)

You didn't have DVD43 or AnyDVD running in the background did you?

I do believe I may have had 2.9.6.5 instead of 2.9.6.6. I deleted the old one, but I can't get the newer one to start download from DVDIdle. It keeps timing out for some reason.

You have to manually put the plugins into the pgcedit plugin folder and then Plugin will appear in the toolbar.

What kind of blank media did you used to burn/backup? If possible, can you verify the MID code from the blank media you're using with either DVD Identifier, Nero CD-DVD Speed, DVD Decrypter or DVDInfo Pro? What speed did you burned on?

The only media I recommend for dvd burning are: Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim "advanced azo/datalife plus" and Maxell (mij by Hitachi), these are top notch (high quality) media. In query to the burning speed process, I recommend burning at 4X only. On the other hand, if your firmware is up-to-date and you're using high quality media like those I've mentioned above, then of course you can always go with 8X. However, I DON'T recommend going beyond 8X, but the choice is yours.

Either version is fine (PgcEdit v0.6.1 or v0.6.2) with the latest PSL2 plugin v2.9. Here read this, this is the "readme.txt" installation instructions:
Quote:
PSL2 (Anti-ARccOS) plugin for PgcEdit and DVD Decrypter

Installation:

Note: This plugin works only under Windows (preferably Win XP.)
It has not been tested under Linux with Wine.

1) If you don't have PgcEdit v0.6.1 or a later version already installed on
your computer (shame on you!), download it at www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/.
Put the PgcEdit.exe file in a folder of your choice. I strongly suggest
"C:\Program files\PgcEdit".
Then launch PgcEdit. PgcEdit will create a "bin" folder with several files and
an empty "plugins" folder in its installation folder.
(You may also want to create the shortcuts and the file associations with the
Options -> Install menu.)
Quit PgcEdit.

2) Extract the psl2_plugin archive to the plugins directory created by PgcEdit
(ie. in "C:\Program files\PgcEdit\plugins\") You must copy at least the files
"psl2_plugin.tcl", "FixVTS.exe" and "crc32.exe". (Do NOT create a subfolder
within the plugins folder!)
(If you prefer so, you may put FixVTS.exe and crc32.exe in the PgcEdit's
installation root folder, or in the "bin" folder, but the psl2_plugin.tcl file
MUST be in the plugins folder.)
As FixVTS can be used independently of the plugin, you may also want to create
a shortcut to FixVTS in your start menu.

3) Launch PgcEdit. A new "plugins" menu, with a "PSL2 (ARccOS)" submenu will
be automatically added by PgcEdit. (You can check which version of the plugin
you are using with the About menu item.)
If you can't find it, verify that you are running PgcEdit v0.6.1 or a newer
version, and that the psl2_plugin.tcl file is in the plugins directory.

For everyone having the problem of your movie being cut short, make sure you have DVDFab Decrypter 2.9.6.6. I had this problem, updated DVDFAb, and all went perfect. You MUST have the newest version.

I do believe that updating DVDFab solved my problem. I haven't tried The Cave again yet, but I had the exact same trouble with Lords of Dogtown and I got it to burn perfectly after I got DVDFab 2.9.6.6.

Thanks for your help Alkohol, great guide!!

@whom may concern,

This is what I originally stated on my guide:
Quote:
Here's what you need to do:

<><> TOOLS NEEDED <><>

DVDFAB Decrypter v2.9.6.6 http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
PgcEdit http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html#download
PSL2 plugin http://forum.digital-digest.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3729&...
or VobBlanker http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm
*NOTE: I stated it clean and clear that you MUST NEED DVDFAB Decrypter v2.9.6.6 to successfully ripped the movie (THE CAVE) into your hard drive first, then continue with the guide from there.

The reason why I put on this guide is because you'll end up with a 50-50 chances of getting an error of "not compressable" and or a "black screen only" when playing with your backup (DVD-R or DVD+R) if you DID NOT used/followed PgcEdit (which is STEP 2) to process. Therefore, if you want to have a "successful backup (full disc or main movie only, your choice)", then you MUST NEED to process/follow it through PgcEdit (STEP 2).

Hopefully, this will straight things out. Good luck and happy burning!!

@wymie

You're welcome, glad I could help. Yes, if you can get around with DVD Decrypter then it will work as well. The main process is STEP 2 (PgcEdit), this is the most important step because PgcEdit and FixVTS will process and filter out "fake/bad cells".

Happy burning!!

Amazing!!

I have a few questions

1 - How do you know when a film may have ARccOS protection?

2 - Do you feel this method can be applied to 'ANY' newly released dvd that may give dvdshrink/dvddecypter similar issues as did the film 'THE CAVE'? IE with ARccOS protection? IE Madagascar, Hitch and any other "PROBLEMATIC' films

3 - I haven't yet watched my backup fully yet but, it seems to be fine (chapter navigation, a picture!!). Was the only reported issue that of a black screen being shown upon watching the backup?

4 - I'm ignorant about VOBblanker but how is it similar (if at all)/ diffrent to PCGEDIT/PSL2. What is it exactly?

5 - Why do some members have success with films while others fail? IE Hitch, Brother's grimm (assuming that they are using similar software).

Cheers, nice guide!!

Well, you can easily tell by the cover of the original dvd ie columbia/tristar, screengem, sony, etc.

Don't quote me on that simply because I'm not a computer guru, I wish I am though, LOL. However, I do believe that if you're an advanced user (familiar) with PgcEdit, PSL2 plugin, FixVTS and VobBlanker, then you shouldn't have any problems. It is likely that you might have a 95% - 100% chance of success.

What method did you used to backup yours?

Honestly, I'm not the creator of VobBlanker, so I don't have a good answer for you here. However, I do believe that VobBlanker is a very useful tool to "process/filter out" fake/bad cells/sectors. In addtition, it can "blank, cut, preview" any/certain scenes easily, such as trailers/previews, extras, and other unwanted stuff.

Again, honestly, I don't know. Perhaps, it's "an operator's fault" to begin with or it could be a badly pressed original disc, but then I don't have any issues at all with those titles.
