New poster here. I'm grateful for this site and all the knowledgeable folks helping others.

My problem - I have a Dell Dimension 8100, powerleap upgrade to P4 running at 1.87 (from Belarc), 640 mg ram. Everything had been fine, ripping and burning backup dvd's at 45 minutes to an hour. Installed an ASUS Nvidia GeForce 6600 (128 mg memory), and now Shrink estimates days to complete analysis/encoding.

Obviously, the new graphics card would seem to be the culprit, but can anyone tell me why, and is there anything that can be done to improve the situation. The machine runs fine, the new graphics card runs fine.

Everything else is in order - running in DMA, no virus/spyware. Nothing different from when it was running normally, other than the video card. Thanks for your help.

bilzincal,
Welcome to the forum. From your description I would have said DMA but you said all was OK. Somewhere you are having OS conflicts so I would suggest that you D/L a Free Registry Cleaner and clean up any conflicts in the registry as that can cause a comupter to slow down. Let start there and see if that helps. If you remove the card and use the MOBO's graphics does it speed up Shrink. You did not mention the MOBO so I figured that is what you were using before the new Graphic card was added

I second CarMike.

By the way, can you post a screen shot of your DMA's? It's not that I don't believe you, but I've seen tons of members that has Nvidia drivers are having troubles with DMAs in regards to Nvidia that's all.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

Thanks for the quick response. This is actually my son's machine and he is at school. He has a cleaner, and I'll get screen shots from him as soon as I can. But I did look at his IDE controllers and they were both ok.

One thing, when I was researching a video card upgrade (they are both agp cards, by the way), several Dimension 8100 users indicated that they had to upgrade their power supply in order to get it to work. I had no problem at all. But with two hard drives, the video card, and twooptical drives, could this be of any concern?

What watt power supply doe the dell have? It if is a 250w you may want to up it to a 350 or 400 to make sure that you have ample supply. Most newer PC's come with at least a 300w.

Here's the screenshot of the DMA settings (I think here's the image if I've done it correctly). If not, both primary and secondary indicate DMA if available.

Regarding the power supply, unfortunately it's a Dell proprietary, either expensive dell or mod the case to fit in a new. But, again, is it at all likely that this could cause the Shrink slowdown?

If Shrink is shutting down during any operation ( especially transcoding) then it is due to an OS Conflict. Has the son run the registry cleaner yet?
