You are probably looking at a bad media problem, have you tried another brand lately?

Sophocles

I was hoping that it would be a long time before some hot shot programmer figured a way to close this loop hole between the File F and ISO mode, but it looks like they got on to it and may have a way now. From what I can determine from looking at the New ARccOS Puppetlock it will really be a problem without AnyDVD.
I have said for a long, long time that a programmer of equal or greater ability can undo anything that can be done by another smart programmer? Period. Hang it there SlySoft.

I guarantee you that IFO Mode will not have any problems with anything as long as there is no change in the Encryption. ARccOS, Puppetlock, Ripguard, etc... are not new encryptions. This is why I can rip any DVD with such protection with a DVD Decrypter version from over 3 years ago. Also, if you notice the guides I wrote on ARccOS, I mention that DVD Decrypter from version 3.1.0.0 and higher will work. I have tested this version up to "The Cave" and have had no problems.

I do not like to call this new stuff "protection". This is because they work the same way as a hole in the disc would work to stop copying. Using this logic, you can come the the conclusion that they will not put a hole on a disc where there is data that has to be read. This is why IFO Mode will work. Finding the corruption is easy. In IFO mode, just look for the cell times that are about 0 seconds. Those are all garbage.

Ok today I tried to burn 40 year old virgin with shrink and Nero and it failed it was on a memorex DVD-RW that i've had over a year so maybe the disc is just worn out, but I didnt wanna try on a disc that wasnt rewritable and waste it. I usually use tdk for movies and verbatim for games but am trying to use up the rest of some shitty imations that I bought that obviously work like crap. Is there a way to burn the full movie using DVD Shrink and just decrypter alone without Nero? I've seen plenty of guides on here but all say to use Nero with them. My x-copy gold isnt working for crap anymore or maybe its just because i've been using the imations lately. Should I just toss the imations and go with the tdk's again?

In essence what you've said is that IFO makes it easier for you to find the encryption in the files. Those files still have to be edited. We're not saying one of the modes may not be better for a particular task. What is being said is that the encryption is present irregardless of the mode being used. DVD Decrypter can still be a useful tool. However, with the Arccoss, Puppetlock encryption, such as that on "The Fog", DVD Decrypter is unable to do the decryption without editing of some sort, whether manually editing or using a PSL2 as a guide. Not saying that Decrypter can't be the means to a successful task, just that it now has to have input of some sort instead of relying solely on its decryption algorithm. If those troublesome "holes" are left in place, what's the use of finding them? Without a corrected algorthm to properly remove the problematic files, the software will continue to fail without help. That's why LUK and other decryption software authors were and are constantly updating the decryption software to correct for the changes introduced. I mentioned that it is a contest of the entertainment industry introducing encryption changes and the decryption programmers rewriting to correct for the changes. 2oldgeek did well in pointing out that if one smart programmer can think it up, another can break it. To date that is what has been going on. Sadly, with DVD Decrypter no longer being supported by LUK, the algorithm is no longer being updated.
Quote:
they are on about file mode, movie but with ifo files, not the actual IFO mode in decrypter, however you could bypass the arccos bit, bad sectors etc using IFO mode where ISO and FILE mode would fail, though you would have to know before hand which cells to untick
As ascii pointed out, manual editing. JaguarGod noted a way to help spot them.

What's going to hurt is that a new breed of encrytion is going to be introduced with Vista. At least it's in the plans. If Microsoft goes along, that means users will have their OS working against them as well. The situation will have some hardware blocked. For certain tasks such as playing the new HD DVD and/or Blu Ray protected content media, XP won't have the drivers for support. So, if things go the way the entertainment industry wants, we're going to see the problems when the new technology arrives later this year (if they release things as earlier planned).

No need to seek me out in particular. Sophocles and others know this material better than I do. Sometimes I'm here and sometimes not, as requests on my time dictate. That's why I'm not familiar with a bunch of the names here. I'm glad to see you and others poring over the software looking for methods to improve the decryption process. My only request is that before stating something as an absolute, find some of the more senior members who have been using the software to discuss your theories. Often they will be willing to help as they can, whether pointing to a flaw in the reasoning, or to help research your findings. With any theory, it's best to put it out there and see how it works before saying "that is the way it is". Then those guys in the backroom may change the playing field all over again. ;)

I'd just like to note that the good folks at Fengtao have given the public a nice tool in DVDFab Decrypter. They're online at http://www.DVDIdle.com . They've given us DVD Region+CSS Free and other backup apps. I'm amazed they're giving away a nice piece of their programming efforts; though it is something of a "hook" to get the attention of users. Nothing wrong with advertising, especially when it's with a handy piece of freeware. My complaint has been with their speed at updating the decryption software. As I mentioned earlier, their last version, 2.9.6.8, was good at ripping the troublesome DVD, "The Fog". If they continue to update the app, it could be one to rely on. I ripped "The Fog" with this one, opened the ripped, cleaned, file in the encoding software, and proceeded to backup the movie with no problems at all. I'll add that the AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter gave me a successful rip, but I was limited to DVD Shrink for transcoding, among the transcoders and encoders at my disposal. I can't say for them all, that would be some serious work, lol. With this duo, I got a file count error with RB in the final segment during rebuild.

Sophocles and all who have participated in this thread,

My grammar, vocabulary and penmanship are not as sophisticated or polished as some of you, so please bear with me. Where I come from ?Them horses is mine!? may not be grammatically correct, but it gets the point across. LOL

Sometimes, one must ?Think outside the Box? in order to find an answer.
I am guilty of staying in the box too long because until now, I had not run across a disc that I couldn?t rip in the ISO Mode of DVDD. When someone said that they couldn?t rip the same movie that I had just done, I laid it off on a Bad Pressing and suggested exchanging it. Now, I am sure it was a different protection level, even in the same region, that was being dealt with and I was guilty of comparing apples to oranges..

I am also guilty of making a naked statement, which in the form that I presented it was erroneous. I should have put some drawers on it?.
brobear caught this and chastised me for it.
I said:
Quote:

If you really think the two methods, ISO and File, are the same then try this:
Rip a protected disc in the File Mode and open it with DVDShrink in the Open File Mode. It will throw up?..
Next, Rip the same disc in the ISO Mode and open it in DVDShrink in the File->Open Disk Image Mode. It Loves it, because the protection has been removed?

What I should have said is:
I have a copy of Brothers Grimm with the following protection level as displayed by AnyDVD.

Summary for drive D: (AnyDVD 5.8.3.1)
Drive (Hardware) Region: 1

Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)

Video DVD (or CD) label: THE_BROTHERS_GR
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1!

RCE protection not found.
Found & removed wrong DVD structure!
Found & removed Macrovision RipGuard protection!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Found & removed 2 bad sector protections!
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!

I was able to rip this disc in the File F Mode of DVDDecrypter but when attempting to open the file with Shrink in the Open Files Mode, Shrink came back with the error message:
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.

I then ripped the same disc in the ISO Read Mode of DVDD and opened it in Shrink using File -> Open Disc Image. I was then able to work with the file and it appeared to contain no protection at all.

This, and prior dealings with these routines (ISO and File), is the basis for my saying that the two methods ?Handle? the files differently.

Please understand that I am not trying to beat anyone with an experience stick. At my age, I?ve been down a lot of roads and most of them weren?t paved. When I began programming, there was no Internet and no forums where you could have discussions and ask questions. Even if there had been, no one knew anything about the new microcomputers anyway? Times have changed for the better..

This is the protection per AnyDVD for my copy of The Fog:

Summary for drive D: (AnyDVD 5.8.3.1)
Drive (Hardware) Region: 1

Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)

Video DVD (or CD) label: THE_FOG
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1!

Found & removed RCE protection!
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Found & removed structural copy protection (Arccos, Puppetlock)!
Found & removed invalid VOBUs!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Found & removed 3 bad sector protections!
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!

This appears to be the same as the one posted by brobear.
He said he was able to rip it in the File Mode with DVDD. I can?t!
It stops on VTS_01_1 when the read rate drops to Zero!
And yes, Sophocles, I read everything else and skipped the offending file then went back and set my read rate to 1x, but No Go..
Changed Drives and tried again. No go!
If I try again, I sure hope someone calls the Funny Farm to pick me up. LOL

I'll have to wait until I get The Fog to prove that I can do it in File mode no problem. I'm doing flight plan right now which has similar protections and I just ripped it in file mode. DVD Shrink encounters an error and won't open it but Nero Recode which is authored by Dr. Shrink too, opens it with no problem. Why is that? DVD Shrink is dated, not that I used it much anyway but it's going on two years since it had an update. I can also open it with DVD Rebuilder which I do use, but poor old DVD Shrink gets an error. I keep it around to better identify soundtracks and nothing more. Here is my AndDVD read. I would spend more time analysing and finding the solutions to this debate but I'm inovled in a couple of beta tests and they deserve my time. Good luck!

In settings under the I/O tab I had the Elby option selected as the interface and under the General tab I unchecked "Check for structural protection". Other than those the rest of the settings were on default. With AnyDVD + Decrypter you may want to try that. As sophocles stated, some equipment doesn't like to dip into low speeds. I noticed mine will dip to 0x and still read at a low rate. VTS_01_1.VOB was where my PC encountered the encryption in both the File and ISO read mode. In both modes I got
Arrrrgggh! Too Many 'Pack Header Not Found' Warnings!
'Pack Header Not Found' logging has been halted for now.

The logging stopped and the computer and software waded on through and completed the task. This one could pose hardware issues for some. I'm not saying that's the case, just a possibility.

As for "The Brothers Grimm", I have no idea what you encountered. It's been a while since I backed that one up. I ripped it in File mode and encoded it with RB/CCE and burned with Nero Express. I didn't notice anything difficult on that one. Had you interacted with the forum on "The Brothers Grimm", before using it to make a deduction, you may have found a different set of circumstances, as you have here with "The Fog". Note I had a different experience as well with "The Brothers Grimm" from yours. So, using that example for a variance in ISO and File would have needed comparisons's of the encryption found and the decryption logs; similar to what was done here.

@ 2oldgeek Am I to understand that you haven't been able to burn the Fog yet. I see you have AnyDVD. Or are you saying you could not use Decrypter to rip the fog in either mode? AnyDVD will handle the Fog with Shrink and set to burn with Nero. I first tried Nerorecode with AnyDVD and it would not open the files. I've been saying for 2 months now that all the discs for the same movie are NOT equal. I think there are different encryptions on discs in the same areas. BestB, BlockB, and CircuitC may recieve different versions to market. I read where someone 's having trouble with something I did 15mins ago easy and then I have a problem disc and everyone else has managed to burn easily.

Did you open the disc with AnyDVD on for transcoding with Shrink set to burn with Nero? I have a habit of ripping to the hard drive and didn't try that recipe. It shouldn't make much difference, if Shrink will do the ripped files, it should handle the same data stream direct from the source. With AnyDVD in use, Decrypter is merely recording to the HD and producing a log.

In case you missed it, DVDFab Decrypter (free) successfully ripped "The Fog" and "cleaned" the source well enough for most transcoders and encoders to do their job. As a note for those that had a failed rip with DVDFab Decrypter on this one, check http://www.dvdidle.com to make sure you have the latest version. Decryption updates often make a lot of difference.

This is the exact same log that I received while running AnyDVD in the background.
I ripped it and thought I had accomplished the task, then I looked down and saw a little Red Fox head on my tool bar. LOL
I exited AnyDVD and ripped again with DVDD barefoot. This time I didn?t get the ?Pack Header Not Found? warnings and it failed at VTS_01_1. Dropping the read rate to zero?.

Look see if you had AnyDVD turned on?

I assume you're talking about the cave in the first paragraph. WithAnyDVD running I ripped the Cave to HD with DVDDecrypter and reauthored with NeroRecode and burned as well with nerorecode. I may have done the burn on the fly with NeroRecode.(I don't often do that) I'll have to notate that to my discs in the future. As far as the Fog, it went AnyDVD -(I tried Recode)no success then Shrink which ripped and was set to burn with Nero. I think I have better success with Decrypter and then recode. But hey, get all the tools you can and usually something works. I've been doing this for over 2 years now and I made my share of coasters but there has not been a single movie to date that I have not been able to back up. Some were a challenge. But I like challenges. You have to stay 1 upgrade or 1 tool ahead.

Yes, I have ripped The Fog using AnyDVD? No Problem.

What started this thread off was my statement that one didn?t need AnyDVD to rip with because DVDD in the ISO mode would handle it..

It seems the original theme of the debate went off course LOL

And I still believe that I was right, up to the point that I discovered a protection level that I had never had dealings with?? As in THE FOG?

Where did I go astray, I've been talking about DVD Barefoot while others are blindsiding me with AnyDVD... hehehe

2oldgeek once again we come to a situation where you are having problems and others are succeeding with the same methods and failing with ones you claim success with. I'm not blindsiding you with AnyDVD on, AnyDVD off. Also, AnyDVD isn't always the great panacea. In this case, with "The Fog", it left a somewhat "dirty" structure that I could only get DVD Shrink to process. DVDFab Decrypter did better. Did you mention DVDFab Decrypter didn't work for you? (I hate to wade back through the posts, but I believe someone said it.) You've been lucky with the DVDs you've worked with, there have been a large number of them that cause problems for DVD Decrypter since the loss of support. People have encountered those encryptions in File, IFO, and ISO modes with DVD Decrypter. There is no magic system anyone has come up with to defeat these encryption changes. Work by software programmers has kept pace with the changes. Those without support obviously can't handle what they weren't programmed for. Even the great LUK wasn't clairvoyant. There are those that are successful at editing, but that isn't the automatic decryption features of a program such as DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter.

If the difference is different algorithms for different batches of a release, that would make it difficult only if a person tries to use obsolete software on a DVD with a newer encryption. To date some of the software apps seem to be updated and working. If older encryption strategies are used, then older apps and even older versions of currently supported decryption apps will work. But for the newer (different) encryption algorithms, it takes the updated programs to handle those; not saying DVD Decrypter or other apps can't be used. It does mean it won't work automatically, the user needs to edit or use a PSL2 file as a guide. DVD Decrypter will still do some of the DVDs being released, but those are still using the older algorithms. As most of us have noticed, there are at least some of "The Fog" DVDs that have encryption that defeats the automatic decryption of DVD Decrypter.

We've covered the file structure and even gone as far as getting down to the bit level that moglex wanted. The factory put the DVD encryption on the DVD. For a complete read of those files a software program will read the complete set of files. The software or user must then edit out the encryption. With DVD Decrypter, there is a different emphasis on how the files are read in the different modes, but those files are read. That's why I encountered the same encryption at the same spot with DVD Decrypter in both ISO read and File modes. Those results are repeatable for any user of DVDD. If encryption is encountered in one mode, simply run it through the other modes with the same settings and it will appear in the same files.

I backup most of the newly released movies, at least the ones I like, and Sony with the heavier encryption seems to be in there constantly. To date I have a 100% success rate. On occasion I've needed to burn when Nero issued a warning and in some instances only Shrink would process the "dodgy" files without editing. I realize I've been lucky, but I keep my decryption software updated and try to stay current on methods and apps being used. Rarely do I get a release on day 1, so the software programmers usually have a fix before I do a backup, if a new spin on encryption has been introduced. I intentionally got "The Fog" to check the encryption. Nice it turned out to be a decent movie. LOL I've shown it to be doable and others are claiming success as well. I have no doubt Sophocles will get it as soon as he has time. As I said, he knows more about this than I do. He's tied up though, so by the time he get's it, this may be old news.

No one that I've noticed is saying DVD Decrypter won't handle algorthms it was programed for. That covers your successes. However, it won't automatically process newer encryptions, that accounts for the failure of others and your recent failure with the app. As for your successes with ISO and failure with File while ripping the same source, I don't have I clue as I'm not there with you. I'd want to turn those DVDs "every which way but loose". ;) I've never suffered the same experience. We apparently are able to come up with separate results even when showing the same encryption systems. There I suspect equipment, but no way to prove or disprove that situation. The conflicting info from other users and their different successes indicate that using one file method over another is no cure all. That brings us to a simple deduction, old algorithms haven't been correcting newly developed different ones. Algorithms (operation rules for the non tech group) have a specific function. In the case of these algorithms being used for encryption and decryption, an encryption algorithm is successful if it falls outside the scope of decryption algorithm and thus defeating the software. The decrytion software is successful if it encompasses the variables included in the encryption algorithm and thus processes the files. That's a situation you can bank on.

That post was a bit long, but I thought some things needed clarifying. Most reasons for your successes and failures can be explained simply by the encryption (algorithms) you encountered. Had you done the research, you would have found them in the logs of DVD Decryter in the various modes. No one is blindsiding you, only asking that you do more in the line of research and discuss findings before telling everyone that a certain technique works. Newbies are susceptible to things they read and have a tendency to repeat them incessantly if it happens to give them a backup; not realizing another method would have worked just as well.

On a serious note, do you see any flaws in the way I've presented the analysis of the situation with encryption and decryption as it relates to DVD Decrypter and it's various modes?

Trust me, if it's on DVD I can back it up in file mode using any one of several strategies that I've learned over the last few years, you might want to try a little experimenting. Secondly, if you're interested in quality backups drop DVD Shrink and get into encoding for a superior quality picture. Have you guys considered taking up fly fishing? And now that I've sniped, I'm off to test the new RB beta with dual core support.:) LMAO

Sophocles,
You're going to make me build that dual core system yet. ;) See how far I am behind the times. I'm using the new version of RB Pro and you guys are already testing dual core betas. What's the world coming to when 3.4GHz CPU, 2GB CAS2 RAM, and 600 GB storage just doesn't mean much anymore? ;) By the way, I'm into catching fish, if you like flies, that's your business. LOL

2oldgeek and anyone else with the stamina to have stuck around:
I'd like to clarify something. I've been saying "new, different encryptions, systems" often they are only new permutations of the older algorithm.

Meat fisherman Eh!

Actually I just finished running procoder with RB and it's strange to see two instances of the same program running twice. If get back to dvdhounds you'll not that there's and application called dual RB which is also being tested with hyper threading. Rumbah its creator has joined and jdobbs was around last night. He's pumping out betas faster than we can test them. I started an encode tonight only to have to stop after about 20 minutes and update. I don't think there are any benefits to be had using hyper threading and procoder but there is using hyperthreading and dual HC encoder.

Believe me when I say, I have No problems backing up or getting the best quality from any DVD I backup.

My original intent was to provide ?Freebies for the Newbies? until they were ready to step up to the plate. No more, no less.

Only until I found out that everything I had said was based on the misconception that my DVD?s had the same protection level as everyone else?s did I realize what was really going on.

I really hate to admit it, but sometimes there?s no fool like an old fool?.

When you're prepared to move out of transcoding into encoding give me a call and we'll help get you setup. There's a no restriction free version of everything to get you started. I have to warn however you'll probably have to rip in File mode but the good news is that it can still be converted to an ISO. LOL
