So I'm getting a good handle on all this rip-burn stuff(thanks to you guys!).

I notice a lot of people like to use decrytper to rip, why is that? I use shrink to rip straight to ISO and everything is working fine so far.

Also, If I was going to buy some software to add to the collection, what would you recommend? AnyDVD looks promising for heavily protected DVD's. If I get that can I use nero (which is one thing I picked up) to rip DVD's?

Is there any other good freeware besides shrink and decrypter?

Thanks everyone!

Here are my methods: *** all of the tools are FREE ***

<><> A <><>
<> DVD Decrypter to rip via Mode File F

<> use DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 to encode/transcode (your choice)

<><> B <><>
<> DVD Decrypter to rip via Mode File F
<> PgcEdit to "process" and "filter" out fake/bad cells/pgcs
<> use DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 to encode/transcode (your choice)

<><> C <><>
<> DVDFAB Decrpter to rip
<> VobBlanker to "process" and "blank" out fbi warning fake/bad cell/pgcs
<> use DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 to encode/transcode (your choice)

<><> D <><>
<> DVDFAB Decrypt to rip
<> PgcEdit to "process" and "filter" out fake/bad cell/pgcs
<> use DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 to encode/transcode (your choice)

<><> E <><>
<> DVD Decrypter to rip via MODE, ISO, Read R
<> open Disk Image via DVD Shrink
<> use DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 to encode/transcode (your choice)

100% success regardless if it's RipGuard or ARccOS, plus it doesn't required AnyDVD or DVD43

Well I think DVD43 is free, doesn't update as much as AnyDVD though. Works like AnyDVD, but if you do buy a program AnyDVD is GREAT!

I do the same as alkohol does, but I have never used VobBlanker. I like to use shrink and re-author to save movie only. And have had no problems doing backups. I also have AnyDVD running in the background.

Just wondering here, but what is the benefit of VobBlanker? Does it just help keep the menu or something?

Along with DVDDecrypter, VOBBlanker is a genius, must-have tool. I've been using it for a couple of months, and seem to now have it mastered...I've had discs over 6 GB's that when removing small featurettes and other unnecessaries with Blanker have enabled my backup to have 95-100% quality and STILL have full menu structure...That's the magic of VOBBlanker. On those discs I also remove the logos and intros at the beginning(and after movie's end) and it boots up right to the menu...Better than original! Apparently also good for removing embedded bad cell protection, but I haven't got into that yet. But as a space saving device for best quality backups, essential!
