I am about to reconfigure my computer to put my 1st drive as master connect my 2nd drive with the same cable and put it to slave and then connect it to the motherboard. Does this provide perfomance problems in shrink and Nero doing this? currently i have them both going to IDE connectors on the motherboard as masters. I dont want to lose any performance when switching...

Your burner should be master, and your other thing, DVD ROM, CD burner etc should be slave. Burners work best when they're on master.

First of all you should never set both devices for either master or slave when sharing a cable connected to the same IDE controller! Doing so can cause hardware/software conflicts during IRQs(interrupt requests),which can decrease performance and cause unexpected results.

Unless they're serial ATA drives which have no master/slave configuration setting to be set, there are two possible correct settings for IDE devices. When sharing a cable connected to the same IDE controller:

1) Your primary drive should be set as the master and the second set as slave.
2) If your motherboard supports it(most now do), both drives can be set for cable select(CS), it's an auto dectection/config feature.

To ensure that both drives are operating at their peak performance, make sure that DMA is enabled for both if available. Click on the link and follow the guide to do so.

Thanks for the replies - I am talking about changing it!! I have 2 DVD burners with each having its own cable going to seperate IDE ports on the motherboard. I just bought a 3rd DVD-burner that I am going to install in my system. Therefore the need to have 2 burners share a cable and turn 1 jumper into master and the other drive jumper into slave. I have 2 hard drives going to an IDE controller card in my PCI slot....

I configure my 4 DVDRW on both of the IDE channels & my 4 HDD on SATA & RAID. I used all 4 DVDRW to read & write but not at the same time. I never have any problems doing copying, burning data or video.
All my 4 DVDRW are on DMA mode. As long as you don't use more than one writer at a time, the performance will not be affected regardless whether it's on Master or Slave. I ever tried using one drive to write a DVD, another drive to transfer from DVD to HDD & a third drive to write a CD all at the same time. The transfer to HDD is very slow & the DVD burning at 8X took 27 mins instead of the normal 8 minutes & the CPU usage peaked at 100%
