Hello all, I am sorry if I sound novice-like but I have only really burnt two DVDs successfully. I use DVD Shrink 3.2 to rip the DVD movies and then I use Nero Premium 7+ to burn them on my NEC dvdRW 16x, just bought it a few days ago. I have burnt a total of 5 dvd-rs(TDK 16x by the way) and three of them have failed, 2 were at burnt at 4x, 1 was 8x. I usually don't have any applications running on my computer while I'm doing the encoding and burning.

They give me an error message at the end when the DVD seems to be finalizing, like everything is finished burning its just the ending the cd, and nero says it can do something, and the burn process is failed. I have no clue what I am doing wrong? Thanks for the help beforehand.

@rujin
Welcome to aD!
Your best bet woud be to post the last Nero log. It's located at c:program files>ahead>nero>nero history.log. Make sure you edit out the serial #'s.
The error your probably getting is that the disc can't be finalized and it may be due to those TDK's. They don't always use the best manufacturers. Your log should tell us who made them.

Shutdown some background programs, you are using most of your memory. Other than that nothing really jumps out. You might want to try some better media such as verbatim, taiyo yuden, sony, maxell, or fuji (made in japan). I've never used TDK media but a very experienced and wise buddy of mine swears they are garbage and has had nothing but problems with them.

TDK are not great, but these aren't so bad...you don't know what you'll get from spindle to spindle.

But I would let someone else confirm the drivers, I may be totally off base.

hey guys thanks for the quick replies, I don't understand because I am not running that much things, I know burning at 8x was a little bit fast, but I had 2 fails with 4x, I read something about TDK's being quailty DVDs on one of these stickied posts. I just bought a 50pack spindle of TDK media, so hopefully I didn't totally waste my money on these. I can try on closing most if not all my programs(processes I assume because no programs are really running just my anitvirus, firewall, things of that nature.) Anyone know of a good place for cheap DVDR media? Also I have the question about DVD+R and bookset typing, would it be beneficial to me to use these instead of the DVD-R or does it really not even matter? I played the ones that burned correctly on my ps2 and it works.

In order for your NEC drive to be capable of bitsetting/booktyping to dvd-rom with DVD5 media it will require that you flash it with hacked firmware. You can shutdown excessive background programs by clicking on start then run then type in msconfig then click ok then click startup then disable all and apply then ok. Reboot. Go back and enable all after the burn. I never have to do this but you aparently have a lot running in the background.

I've got the 3540A with hacked firmware and love it, 9mmruger1 has the 3550a that you have with hacked firmware too...let us know if you want a link to get it, either one of us would be glad to help you out.

Thanks for the firmware link, quick question, what is the purpose of bookset typing DVD+R's does it just make it more compatiable for more sorts of DVD players?

Well it seems to have happened once again, I did as Mort suggested using the msconfig and ended up successfully burning one DVD, after that I ripped another DVD to the harddrive, then tried to burn with Nero it failed at 4x, then I tried it again still failed. Not sure if its a resource problem but I don't understand why it would everything was closed. This is happening with no reboots, the NEC drive is also an external USB drive if that helps any. Could also post the log for the failure if that could help, thanks m8s!

DVD ROM is the industry standard, so all drives are supposed to play that format. However, booktyping isn't really necessary unless you've got a standalone that has extremely limited support. Even players a few years old support +R and -R. The ones that don't are now the rarity. Many of the newer players support RW and CD formats as well. It's all about compatibility. Hacked firmware can sometimes cause problems and when they do they have invalidated any warrantee on the drive. Also, a bad flash can kill a drive, so be careful, even when using an OEM firmware.

One thing that many beginners forget with the Nero suite, or don't know, is to NOT load InCD. It's a batch writing app and it interferes with DVD video recording apps. So, if you have InCD, delete it from the control panel if possible. If not delete the entire Nero and when setting up the new install, leave InCD out. Give it a try and check back with us. Even if it doesn't help the current problem, it will be preventive maintenance, because InCD is a known problem with doing DVD movie backups.

If you installed Nero and didn't know NOT to install InCD, then you did. InCD is on all the time. There is no key to turn it off. In the old Nero 6, I heard someone say it could be deleted from the control panel, add remove separately from the rest of Nero. Not sure. Check and see on your version. If InCD isn't listed, then delete the entire app and reinstall without the InCD. I'm not sure that is your problem, but I've seen InCD do this in the past.

The way InCD causes the problem is that it is constantly on and retains a link to the optical drive. When another app is trying to operate the drive, you have 2 apps communicating at the same time. InCD can work in segments on a drive which affects finalizing. So, InCD can cause a disk for another recording app not to finalize.

As I said, it may not be the problem, but you will be doing some preventive maintenance and in the process it may cure the current problem. Also, that will be another possibility eliminated. The log was showing the burn finished, but the disc isn't finalizing.

No offense here, but I don't think TDK is a very good media to begin with, it's definitely better than CMC MAG though. My suggestion is to try other high quality media like genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim "advanced azo or datalife plus" and MAXELL (mij by Hitachi).

Good luck!!

That may be an issue because the firmware for some drives isn't capable of handling a wide variety of media from different manufacturers. In some cases it's just a matter of an inferior product. But I'd try taking out the InCD first. That's a no cost item and it needs to be done anyway.

There are also a lot of drivers in your log! Do you by chance have roxio installed? It will cause problems similiar to that of InCD.

rujin: A small amount of hard drive maintenance might help. Be sure to Check your hard disk for errors and defrag. Just in case, lots of people don't know how to do this, go to your C: drive and open proerties then tools and run the error checking option - check both boxes and reboot and then defrag. If your putting files on another drive DeFrag that one for sure. You have no idea how much backing up a DVD will mess up your HD.

2 schools of thought there. I have about 500GB on 2 WD HDDs. I do a lot of DVD backups. I do leave most of the DVD files off the main boot partition. However, I don't defrag very often and I don't suffer any detrimental effects. I've gone months without doing it and even when I did, I didn't see any appreciable results. Maybe it helps on some systems, but it isn't a panacea for all.

Here's a link to some info about Roxio that Mort mentioned. Pay attention to RoxiZap. http://www.roxio.com/en/support/kb/ecddvdc/ee6000061.jhtml

But, before doing all that, remove the InCD and see how that works.

Hey guys, thx for the help so far, esp Mort and BroBear for there quick responses

Okay to answer some questions, I have reinstalled Nero7 come to find to out that InCD is not even available to install with the custom installation selected. So I don't think that is a problem, however I had Nero 5, but I uninstalled that though. I have never installed Roxio so that should not be a problem either. Anyway to cut down on the amount of drivers Nero uses? A program or somehing of that sort, does seem to be alot compared to your logs. The defrag/check disc is a good idea, I will do that a little later.

Not quite sure why I would be having system problems as I have a P4 2.4ghz with 512ddr ram.

I will burn a few tonight and let you guys know how it turns out

If it had the X then it probably didn't install. It would show up in the Programs file if it did.
