all I have searched this hole forum and the net as well and can't find the answer to this. I load dvd shrink up it starts the analysis of a dvd, any dvd. Go to backup to copy all of a dvd or just sections either one, and the dvd drive will open and then I get an error and dvd shrink shuts down. It shows the dvd burn options box. I can't copy the error on the windows xp send report screen. Does any one have any ideas? Thanks

What's the exact error message shrink gives? So it's done encoding and is now ready to burn - is that where the problem happens?

As binkie7 mentioned, we need the error message. Try it again and then tell us what error pops up.

When you say Shrink shuts down do you mean it closes or do you mean it is freezing?

Are you getting the "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue" error?.....The one where it wants to send a message to Micro$oft?
I'm thinking that you select "Backup!" which opens the Burn Options then you select OK. Then at that point you are getting the error?

Try it with another movie. What movie is this?
Some newer movies have extra protection that causes Shrink to do strange things.

You may want to try removing and reinstalling the program.
Also..
Make sure you don't have that Interactual media player installed.

binkie7 and fasfrank and the rest of afterdawn, here is as detailed a description as I can give you to help me. Thanks in advance for trying. I have AnyDVD 5.8.3.1 and DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15. I open DVD Shrink and go to open disk. For example today I am trying X-2. I have tried atleast 15 different DVD's. It goes to the screen to pick your drive. Mine is D drive. It then opens the analysis screen. Once this is done it is back to the DVD Shrink main menu. If I go to either the "entire disk" or "re-author" it does the same thing. A new window will pop up asking what region I want it to be, even though I have region free selected in DVD Shrink options. As soon as I hit backup the drive opens, and the "backup screen" opens. It has the 5 tabs on top and shows my backup target as my D drive and the X-Men 2 Folder as the Temp Folder. I hit ok and then it goes to DVD Shrink as encountered a problem and needs to close (Microsoft generic report message). I click on see data and the error signiature is AppName: dvdshrink3.2.exe AppVer: 3.2.0.15 ModName:dvdshrink3.2.exe ModVer:3.2.0.15 Offset0007c98a. If I click on technical information the following comes up; there are over 67 module's that come up all .dll files. Do you need all of this? It is a lot of info. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well.

fasfrank may be the best to answer this one for you but here's some things to try:
You have a conflict going on somewhere. Run a registry cleaner - if you don;t have on I use registry mechanic - here's a link to try it:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Registry_Mechanic_d3306.html
Do a windows disc cleanup and a system defrag.
The RCE Region Protected pop up you get can sometimes happen - nothing I would be concerned with. Does it do it with all movies though?

ok I have uninstalled and reinstalled both AnyDVD and DVD Shrink. I have tried old and new versions as well. I have also taken advice from binkie7 and run a registry cleaner. It found a few errors, but it still has not solved my problem. Could this be a software issue, maybe something that is conflicting with DvdShrink? I know the DVDR work I have used DvdX Copy with it, but the compression ratio is not that good. Maybe even the cable hookup on the drive itself? I am at a loss any help would be greatful.

Do you have access to Nero Recode? It works aboat the same as DVD Shrink...try it and see if you can get it to work.

I am wondering if the issue is not a DvDShrink issue at all. I was searcing the forums after LOCOENG suggested using Nero recode. I have Nero 6 ultra edition. I have found a few people that said they had problems with Nero not working. I am wondering if this could be the problem. I got the program from a friend and it is the complete no crack version. I am going to see if there is a newer version of Nero to use with DvDShrink. Could I use any other program the burn as well? Thanks again for the help. Styles

If you create an ISO you can burn with:

DVD Decrypter: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm

Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Here is the Nero update, current version 6.6.0.18...packages 1 and 2 omit the InCD packet: http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php

If you installed INCD when you 1st put Nero on your computer. Uninstall INCD, then go to the Nero site and look for their clean INCD link. I had some problems with Shrink until I cleaned INCD out.

I deleted Nero 6 ultra, and installed the latest version 7, without the "incd" function. Now Nero goes in and out of responding and the drive opens and closes by itself when you load Nero. Also it still has not fixed the DvDShrink issue. I really want to use these programs, but I am all out of options. Should I give up and use something else or does anyone else know what I could use? If there is a program that is similiar to DvDShrink let me know. As long as I can increase the compression ratio to something worthy of my DvD player. Thanks. Styles

There is Nero Recode and CloneDVD.

CloneDVD can be found here: http://www.slysoft.com/en/
It has a 21 day free trial.

ok so DvDXcopy platinum is the only working program that I have. I deleted this reinstalled DvDShrink and had the same problem. I also deleted Nero and reinstalled without the INCD function. That didn't work. I deleted Nero and DVD Shrink and got Nero 7 Ultra and went to use Recode on my Dvd. I still get the same problem with the drive opening. Could this be a Firmware issue? I have had the drive for almost a year and never updated the firmware. I have tried about 20 dvd's with every program you have suggested and still the same result. It gets to the cope to ISO section and then opens the drive. I have a DVDR and Cdr drive on my computer, so I burn to a folder then back to the DVDR, which worked fine with Xcopy but now nothing works. Thanks again for any help.

Seems to me that it's not a problem with Shrink but with the folder and hence the directory(D:) you are trying to use.

Have you checked your hdd for problems or have you made any changes to it. For example if a new hdd was installed and it is using the FAT file system then that's the error you would get. In this case the drive or partition should be reformatted to use the NTFS type.

Can you change to a different location, like your C:?

Have you tried doing a XP system restore?

If that does not work then it might be time to reformat your drives and reinstall windows. That's a drastic step though.

If you tried Recode then maybe it offered to save a burn log. If it did you should post it. You also may find it here:

Nero 7:
C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log

For Nero 6:
C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

(this assumes Nero was installed on your C drive.)

Just send the last log you may have. Be sure to remove your Nero serial number.

Your problem is most likely your media choice. CMC Magnetics are some of the worst discs you can buy, stay away from memorex, imation, kyphermedia etc. Use quality media from Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony, Fuji, Maxell (Made in Japan).

Yup, your burner doesn't like your discs.

LOCOENG I appreciate all the help. I have a few other questions though to educate myself. When I used DvdXCopy I never had a problem with these disks. Why would I encounter it now using a different program? Also not to sound stupid, but I bought my DVDR over a year ago, I don't even know the make or model to download new firmware. Where could I find this out??? I checked in hardware manager and it doesn't give me the make or model #'s. In all the information I included in my last thread, did it say anywhere why the drive automatically opens when I load shrink or why it won't allow me to recode a dvd? It opens the drive at the last stage and looses all the encoding information. Should I remove the drive and reinstall it with updated firmware? Can I use the HP +R disks that I have or should I buy new ones? I guess it doesn't pay to check cnet reviews. They rated these disks above average so that is why I bought them. I heard +R is the better choice especially for my DVDR drive. Once again thank you for your help.

The drive info is the first quote of my post, and the link will take you to a page which contains the latest firmware version.

If you are using DVD Shrink for the transcode, then you are selecting to burn with Nero, which will automatically dump the encode files into a temp folder that automatically writes over itself with each new project unless you specify a different folder each time.

MaximumPC also rated Memorex DVD highly in an article of the January issue...go figure. Tech sites and magazines do a quick test, not an extended experiment, so alot of the information in not so accurate.

maybe you should try running DVD Shrink in low priority when encoding?
