Hi All, just wanted to add that you can use DVD Decrypter and pgcedit to backup Sony Movies. This stuff is all freeware. I like Nero recode to shorten and burn my backup. I am new so if this link does not show do a google search of pgcedit for more info. http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56078

@augerpro & whom may concern or those that were having issues:

Glad some of you have THE FOG sorted.

Anyways, below is what I said:
Quote:
<><> Alkohol's VobBlanker method to successfully rip and backup "The FOG" <><>

No AnyDVD, no DVD43, no hustle, no black screen, no glitches whatsoever, always 100% success.

Alright, since there are tons of threads in here are having issues left to right about "The FOG", I've decided to make this simple guide, specifically for Newbies, or those that don't have AnyDVD or those that needed helps only. Yes, THE FOG has the latest Sony's protection just like "THE CAVE", it has an error of "not compressable" when you're trying to "transcode/compress" with DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 even if you've successfully ripped the movie into your hard drive by DVDFAB Decrypter or DVD Decrypter. To solve this problem, here's what you need to do.

<><> TOOLS NEEDED <><>
<> DVDFAB Decrypter 2.9.6.8 DVDIdle.com/download/DVDFabDecrypter29.exe" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.DVDIdle.com/download/DVDFabDecrypter29.exe
<> VobBlanker 2.1.0.0 http://members.aol.com/posunplugged/jsoto/VobBlanker_2100_exe.zip
<> DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 (your choice)

My advice is... if you have any kind of cracking engines like DVD43, AnyDVD or something similar, then turn it OFF or if you DID NOT ripped the movie with DVDFAB Decrypter 2.9.6.8, then IT WON'T WORK with VobBLanker period. This guide is specifically for those that DON'T have AnyDVD or any other cracking engines only.

Good luck!!

Question.... since you have to rip it to your HD and then re-rip? with VOB a second time to take out the protection, do you require to have at least 16GB free? I ripped it but have less than 1GB left of free space. Do I need to free up some space (or buy a bigger HD, that would be a logical solution)?
@rOcket

You don't rip with VobBLanker, all VobBLanker does is read or process the movie files and filter out junks/craps, fake/bad cells or dummy sectors that's all.

Once you have the movie or VIDEO_TS file from VobBLanker (meaning after you've successfully "processed" through VobBLanker), then you can DELETE your original folder, THE FOG and VIDEO_TS file that was ripped by DVDFAB Decrypter earlier. By doing this, you'll never run out of space on your hard drive.

Hope this help, just hollar at me if you run into any issues and hopefully I can help. Good luck!!

Since i didn't get an answer the last time i asked the question, how long is it taking other people to run their files throuh VobBlanker?

Mine took a little over an hour which is A LOT longer than alkohol who said it takes him 10-12 minutes.

Shagwell -

I am new to V-Blanker as well, but in the handful of times I have used it, it has NEVER taken longer than 10-15 minutes.

Thanks for the information. I followed your instructions and everything went accordinlgy. I was however concerned that when I entered the Blanking info, 24-25-26 etc., that there was no indication as to whether it had registered or not. Only that the length of the movie had been shortened.
Also it took a good hour for VobBlanker to finish. I guess I can live with that since it's only Sony movies that require this method. (So Far)
SONY! What are they trying to pull...lol
Thanks again

Mine took an hour as well but other people on this thread and on the board in general have said theirs only takes 10-15 minutes. I'm hoping its something that can be fixed.

@shagwell & dbw9

What is your computer specs (i.e. processor, ram, etc.)? Honestly, VobBlanker 2.1.0.0 should take NO MORE THAN 15 minutes just to PROCESS and FILTER out craps/junks.

If you have 2 hard drives, then the best/fastest way is to set your "output folder" into a new place/destination/hard drive, this will increase the processing times faster.

For example:
"input folder" = C:\THE FOG\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO
"output folder" = D:\VOBBLANKER FOG\VIDEO_TS

Mine only took like 10 - 12 minutes to process depends on how big is the movie.

==========================================================================

@dbw9

By "blanking" those VTS 23, VTS 24, VTS 25 and VTS 26, the movie is not shorten, those are basically useless stuff only (i.e. fbi waring, one possibly is a Sony dummy cell "the one with a Sony Logo" and the other 2 is useless craps only).

Some craps was put on the very first VIDEO_TS.VOB, however, by using VobBLanker to PROCESS, it took care of those junks or fake cells/dummy already.

alkohol,

I'll check the specs later on but i have been using an external harddrive to do all my DVD backups. I'll see if it goes any faster if I first put the files on my local harddrive.

@DJFAST

Yes, it (THE FOG) will work with PgcEdit with PSL2 plugin + FixVTS, I've used PgcEdit before and it's as flawless as VobBLanker. In fact, I did a guide for "THE CAVE" using PgcEdit PSL2 plugin with The Wizard + FixVTS last month. That went smoothly in addendum to successfully backup THE CAVE despite of all the confusion and mumbo.. jumbo from a few member/whiners, thus I've requested the thread to be closed by one of my buddy "creaky, the Nero-nator".

Honestly, I think that both VobBLanker and PgcEdit are definitely 2 of the most powerful free tools (I'm in favor of VobBLanker, it's more stronger because you can blank, cut, play/preview and process) that will handle encrypted protections besides DVDFAB Decrypter, DVD Decrypter and DVD43, regardless if it's RipGuard or ARccOS.

Again, my VobBLanker method has never let me down, it's always 100% success. No AnyDVD, no DVD43, no black screen, no glitches whatsoever.

Good luck and enjoy it!!

Did you guys know that, you can actually open up PgcEdit rip directly from the original without ripping with DVDFAB Decrypter or DVD Decrypter first? Yes... I'll try that for my next guide.

So I have ripped the movie but only have roughly about 800MB left on that drive. Will that be enough to run it through VOB or will I need more?

You'll need more since VOB will leave you with a file the same size as your original. It's not until you run it through Shrink or Nero Recode that you'll get it down to a smaller size.

my computer specs are Pentium 4, 2.5 Ghz and 256 of RAM. Is that what you were looking for?

@shag

Then it should NOT/NEVER take you more than 20 minutes to process with "VobBlanker" at all.

I have a P4, 2.67GHz with 1024MB of RAM and it took me roughly 10 - 12 minutes to successfully process through VobBLanker 2.1.0.0.

My other suggestion is to disable/close/shutdown any unnecessary running programs in the background, disable/shutdown all STARTUP programs in prior to start your next project, run a "scan disc or disc clean up" and "defrag your hard drive" before proceeding with the ripping and burning project (keep defrag on your system on a nightly basis to better smooth itself from running).

Good luck!!

This is all you need to do, set your input, output folder, then click on PROCESS if you don't want to blank out anything. If you do as I said, then you SHOULD NOT be getting any errors whatsoever. Here's a picture for reference: REMEMBER, you need to rip THE FOG with DVDFAB Decrypter 2.9.6.8 into your hard drive first.

Alkohol, I gotta thank you for the detailed instructions, if only I had followed them to the letter the first time. I already had DVDFAB running on my computer but it was not "29" and it failed first time around, but as soon as, and I can't stress it enough everyone out there, I read your instructions again and updated DVDFAB to version 29 it worked flawlessly.

You're very welcome. Glad I could help, now enjoy your backup to the fullest.

Yes, I've always tried to make things simple and FREE for other Newbies or those that needed helps, but I don't know why some people are still having issues left to right. Seriously, I don't know... if you'd asked me, LOL. All I could do is simply provided all the FREE programs that it can successfully backed up any new release just like AnyDVD does.

*Note: before I posted this guide up, I've tested my backups and it worked 100% flawlessly, no glitches, no black screen whatsoever.

Again, you're welcome and I'm glad you've it all sorted out with my simple guide.

Okay - this new vobbblanker is running slower for me than the older version I had for some reason (or maybe it is just the junk sony dumped in this new movie) I tried clicking the analyze button in shrink and it seems to sorted everything out, I haven't tried a burn on it yet though, still waiting on vobblankker to finish

I know it must be starting to sound like a broken record by now, but I have spent the better part of the day trying over and over again to get this Movie (The Fog) to work for me, and still nothing!

I have read the threads over and over again. Uninstalled the software, redownloaded it, because I didn't see anywhere to tell which version I had!(VOB Blanker and DVD Fab Decrypter)

The last time I did it, I did not "Blank" anything out, I just ran it normally. It took 10-12 minutes, which is fine, but the total file size for the folder is only 4.52 GB. It should be 7+ GB, as you have pointed out earlier. + 29 errors.

Your guide is excellent by the way! I just wish it would co-opperate!
Of all the times I have done these steps today, There was once, at the beginning, where DVD Shrink did not give me an error. Although the file size was even lower than what I have listed above, I created an ISO File, burned it to a LightScribe Disc, and tested it, only to find all the trailers, etc, about 2-3 minutes of the movie, and then the credits roll up! Very Frustrating. And ever since, I get a 4.52 file that Shrink gives me an error saying, "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Invalid data in file "C:\Fog|VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB" ok"

I don't see what I am doing wrong, but I am almost to the point of giving up on this one.

Thanks for any comments,
JBurden
