HELP! I have just started using DVD Shrink and its counterpart DVD Decrypter a month ago and I thought it was great. I was able to both both programs to rip and burn a DVD in about 30 minutes (using two DVD drives of course). I've probably burned about 20 DVDs. These last couple of days I noticed that DVD Shrink is taking a lot longer to encode. It usually takes 22 minutes to encode the DVD but now it's taking 1.5 hours!!! That's a big change. I haven't downloaded any new programs and do not have anything else running when it's ripping and burning. I even delete the ISO files when I am done to free up space. Can anybody tell me what's going on? I'm a newbie here but this forum seems to have a lot of good advice. I'd appreciate any advice I can get. BTW, I'm working off a laptop and it's still new so I hope that isn't a big factor.

Are those drives internal or external? Either your DMA mode has reversed to PIO or Off Mode, or you have DVD Shrink's backup quality setting to "Deep Analaysis" + AEC.

If it's your DMA, then try the simple guide below to troubleshoot and enable your DMA.

This is a very simple/basic guide showing "how to enable DMA back On by uninstalling the driver(s)". This will solve your DMA issues nearly 99% most of the times, unless you're the few that has a Nvidia driver, then I can't help you. You'll need to google on the net for an answer on that.

Enjoy it!!

If you haven't done it already? Your hard-drive will need defragging also.

I have both an internal (on my laptop) and an external burner. I use the internal one to rip and the external one to burn. I already ran the defrag. That didn't help. Then I uninstalled the DVD burner and rebooted. Still does not work. The enconding of a movie using the internal burner took 8 minutes to analysize (deep analysis is off) and 1 hour and 50 minutes to encode. On the external burner it took less than 2 minutes to analysize and 28 minutes to encode. What else can I do?

In the DVD Shrink options, there is an option to run DVD Shrink in low priority mode. If this option is selected and you are running other processes at the same time, you will experience some delay. However, if you don't use this option your other programs won't run right. Your choice on that one.

Also, (having two drives) if you are ripping and burning at the same time, you will experience longer times for each process. My times go from about 15-25 min. for each process alone to 40-50 min. if I do both at the same time, and I have 2GB of RAM.

It doesn't sound like this is your problem, but it may help.

@angellady

Have you followed the DMA guide given to you by alkohol? Are you ripping the DVD to your HDD first using DVD Decrypter or are you starting with DVD Shrink to rip and burn with DVD Decrypter? Try ripping to HDD first and then process the files with DVD Shrink.

Nice tut,alkohol...can't go wrong with your clear instructions. If I may jump in here quickly with an off-topic question...I have two DVD burners, but I use my Pioneer most of the time because it's +/-R; the other burner is a NEC +R. I've just noticed after looking at your tut that my Pioneer reads "Ultra DMA Mode 2" while the NEC reads "Ultra DMA Mode 5" as shown in your captures. Is there a setting in the Pioneer to change this?

Again, apologies for going off-track here.

Uh, to clarify. You need to uninstall the IDE/ATAPI controllers, and not the burner. Uninstalling the burners will not solve the problem.

And, you may need to do this for BOTH IDE/ATAPI controllers. I know the instructions above tell you to check the actual burners, but this is NOT a guarantee of resolving the issue. You need to go into the same device manager, and carefully check the items listed as "IDE/ATAPI CONTROLLERS." See what is listed under the PRIMARY IDE and the SECONDARY IDE, and take a look at the ADVANCED tab.

Please, go back to your settings in the DEVICE MANAGER, and checked carefully to see if both of the IDE/ATAPI controlers are running in "DMA" mode? Please, do this. Now. If you see ANY mention of PIO mode, on either of the IDE/ATAPI controllers, then this will slow your burning down to a painful 1 1/2 hour ordeal (or even 2 hours on an older system).

Let us know. Are BOTH of your IDE/ATAPI controllers showing DMA mode, and are they 100% free of any mention of any "PIO" at all?

IF you see PIO mode on either, then uninstall the IDE CONTROLLER. Whichever one it is (or both). Then, after you re-boot, go back in and make certain you check to see if it has changed the setting back to DMA mode, where it needs to be.
