Could be in PIO mode, check it with this:

Go to
My Computer
Control Panel
System
Hardware
Device Manager
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Open the installed IDE channels (Primary and Secondary)
Click on Advanced settings
You will see the transfer mode. Change it to DMA if available. If any are PIO or stepdown dma you need to un-install the channel (right click on the channel and choose uninstall) and re-boot. Windows will reinstall the device and return it to DMA mode.

daledog,
If you,ve tried uninstalling your ide channels and manually setting them to dma with no luck, then try this, enter your bias and reset to default settings if this option is given:

You don't state which device(s) is/are still in pio mode so I'll assume it's your drives (DVD/CD-ROM or burner) and not the HDD.

Power down the pc, open your case and physically remove/disconnect the ide cable connectors from the back of your drives. Power-up the pc and let the process complete, power back down and reconnect every thing. Power-up the pc, the ide devices should be re-dectected and reinstalled. Check to see if they've been now set to dma mode.

You should also be able to do this for your primary HDD, when you power backup you'll get a black DOS in appearance like screen. Just power back down, reconnect, powerup and recheck.

This should restore DMA mode for all devices. If shrink still appears slow, check its settings and make sure it's not set to run in low priority mode.
