Hello, I have a question on DVD Shrink, I have searched around all I can and have read tons of guides and I think I basically have this figured out but I want to ask just to be sure...
When making a full copy of a movie when you are selecting the compression ratios etc., my question is on the audio part...I have been keeping the AC3 5.1 Channel English and getting rid of everything else (Director's Commentaries, Other Languages, etc.) My question is, what's the difference between the AC3 English 5.1 and the DTS English 5.1? From what I have seen, the DTS is a larger file, does that mean that by keeping the AC3 and not the DTS I am not getting the best possible sound or what? My receiver still shows dolby digital and everything I am just wondering why the DTS is larger (so one would think it's also better) but all the guides say to keep the AC3 instead?
Any explanation would be much appreciated!

The DTS (http://www.dtsonline.com/) is if you have a audio multi-channel and cinema surround sound system. In other words, a home theater system. Since most people don't, is the reason for the recommendation of the removal.

The AC3 is normal Dolby Digital Stero. Just about all TV's will use this for stero sound.

Ok that does make a lot more sense. I do have a 5.1 channel surround sound system so would I be better off to do the DTS instead of the AC3? Or do I need both of them or how does that work? And do all movies have both or do some just have only AC3 or only DTS? I have only done a few so I haven't really noticed. So like when I put the original (store bought, not the copy) DVD in my player and play it with my surround sound, I am most likely hearing the DTS not the AC3 right? Thanks again, you are awesome!

Basically, the AC3 sound is two channel while the DTS is 5 channel. So yes, if your system is 5 channels, then you would be hearing the DTS 5.1 tracks. When you backup the DTS tracks they will play also not just the originals.

If you want to keep the sound on the menus and extras then you'll need the AC3 sound also. Additionally, if you ever loan any backups to anyone (and they don't have as good a system as yours) they'll need the AC3. It would be a good idea to keep it in this case.

Some movies will have only the AC3 sound, in which case there isn't a problem.

Your welcome. Glad to be of help. :)

Is AC3 still 2 channel if it says AC3 5.1? Like I have noticed on some discs it says AC3 2 channel. And then on some it says AC3 5.1? Like on Fantastic 4 for example (under main movie) you've got:

AC3 5.1 Channel English
DTS 5.1 Channel English
AC3 2 Channel Spanish
AC3 2 Channel English

Now obviously I don't need the Spanish. What would I need to have checked/unchecked out of the other 3 for this to play dolby digital on a capable system and then to still play just fine on a regular system (no surround sound). Should I ever keep anything 2 channel under the movie or should I just keep the 5.1's? like if I only keep the 5.1's but then play the disc on a non-surround sound system will it work? And do I need to keep the AC3 and the DTS or if I only need one, which one? Sorry, this is the most confusing thing I have ran into so far, I pretty much have everything else down no problem. Thank you!

Never mind, I searched around some more and found what I was looking for. AC3 will down sample, DTS will not. Thanks again dolphin2 for all your help!
