Hmm, I'm not sure whether or not your model drive is capable of being flashed with firmware that will make it capable of bitsetting or if their is even any bitsetting f/w available for that model. I know the newer models do. I hate sending you elsewhere for answers but I would start a thread here http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86 Hopefully they can give you the information you need and link you to some f/w. Sorry but I just don't know about your model.

thanks for you help - i did upgrade to the nec 1.07 and then i found out it didnt do anything for the bookmark - so i found one that was modified and used that one - its still 1.07 but i think it does it this time
i am not sure how to confirm that its actually dvd-rom after i burn it
i got dvd identifier and when i check it - it says dvd+ etc. dosnt say dvdrom - then i check with DVD Decrypter under tools - drive and whats the drive capable of - and it says it can write to dl also -
so i am assuming i can burn to dl disc -- not sure what else i can do to check for sure -- i checked with dvd info and it says dvdrom on the right hand side - some boxes are highligthed and the rest or not but all say dvd-rom - its a bit confusing -- i read all kind of ways to check it and nothing is as i read it - i have Nero 7 the latest and i try to check it there - from another site i read and i follow there instrutions and its not the same - ? i just hope my dvd burns are good now - and work as before at least -- any more info would be helpful - thanks

dvd identifier will tell you whether or not they are booktyped dvd-rom. Here's what it should say after disc & booktype.
If your drive is now capable of bitsetting you will still have to use a utility such as DVD Decrypter, Nero, or dvdinfopro to set it to booktype DVD+R media to dvd-rom. If you have been using dvdclones burning engine to burn you may have to start saving the file to a hard disc folder and burn it with Nero making sure you have Nero set to booktype dvd-rom.

ok thanks - i see what you mean -- DVD+R and dvd-rom --- mines didnt say that - it said both DVD+R so it didnt bookmark it then - now i am more confused since i though i had it - i do use dvdclone - i really dont like the Nero - but i would try it again - one thing - how do you bookmark with Nero ? -- i have the latest version -

i think i figured something out with dvdinfo - when i checked the bookmark icon to change it - i was checking the box dvd-rom and then ok - and nothing happened - but now i did it again and just clicked the change button and then i clicked ok and now the dvd-rom is checked
and it says i have 499 changes left from the 500 it gives you -
what does that mean excatly - when the changes are finished -- what happens - ? but it gives me only the option for dl discs -- the other buttons are greyed out -- the only buttons i can change the booktype for are for the DVD+R DL and dvd-rom -- what does that mean now - ?

I'm not sure about the 499 since I don't use dvdinfopro to change the booktype. Both my drives are capable of bitsetting with official f/w and they both have their own booktype utilities to automatically booktype all DVD+R media to dvd-rom. Thats a couple nice things about litey's and benq's. I think nec drives are capable of bitsetting DVD+R DL media with official f/w. You need the hacked f/w to bitset/booktype DVD5 media.
Before we get to involved in this just to make sure we are not spinning our wheels, go to that other forum I gave you the link to and start a thread regarding bitsetting DVD5 media with your model drive to be sure there is firmware available for it to be capable of booktyping DVD+R DVD5 media to dvd-rom. If there is no f/w available for your model dvdrw drive then we are wasting our time. See what you can find out in their NEC forum and get back with me.

thanks - i will do that - since this is all confusing now - i used another problem and it seems to be working - but i lost the dl burning now - when i check it with decrpyter - it says it cant write dl anymore - before with the last firmware i used - it was able to and bitset to dl only - now it seems it can do it with single layer - which is ok - but i am curious on how to get all of it to work - i still have a burn a disc to make sure its bookmarking it to dvdrom -

i just flashed it again with another program i got and i checked it with dvd dycrpyter and it says it can write to dl so i think its working this time - but some a few posts back was saying they had a problem with bookmarking it with dvdinfo - i tried it with dvd info also - it shows the box to check for dvd-rom and i check it and when i open it again its not checked as if i didnt do anything - so now i know what the other guy means - havnt a clue on how to set it and forget it with dvdinfo - but i then checked with dycrpter and i went to tools and drive and change bookmark and i did change both dvd+ and DVD+RW to both Dvd-rom - and it stayed that way - i am burning a copy now to check to see if dvdidentifier shows it as dvd-rom this time - i am using dvdclone 2 to burn the files from my hard drive - i think this will work this time - i let you know - also i am still now sure why its giving me a certain amounth of changes i have when i change the bookmark - it started with 500 -- i had to play around a few times and now i have about 497 i think or 496 - dont know what will happen if i finish them -- does this happen to anyone else ?

ok this time it worked -- i burned a copy with a DVD+RW disk and dvd identifier says its a DVD+RW disk and dvd-Rom booktype - so finally its working -- i used someones firmware version 1.08 modified - not sure what excatly i found it on a site - which had many of them - and some dont explain what they do etc. in detail so i used a few and got this one to work - now i have to try to see if i can burn dl discs - and i have to try this dvd in the player that it didnt work before to see if the dvd-rom really makes the difference
thanks for you help - i would like to know why dvdinfo dosnt keep the setting ? or maybe i missing a step -- either way - dycrpyter did it
also i was trying dvdbitsetter i think its called - and it didnt even open when i click to run the program ? but when i shut down the computer says its running so i am guessing it has a bug and something is not making it run on my system - i read its a easy program for my nec 2500 drive to change the bookmark - anything this works now -
hopefully i wont have any problems --

Glad to hear you found some bitsetting f/w for your drive and all is good now. I was a little out of my league since I don't have a NEC drive but had read from others that do how to make them capable of bitsetting. Good luck and hopefully those discs will be compatable with more players.

thanks for you help -- its always good to hear from others who know more about a subject - also - do you know if the quality would be affected for better or worse with any firmware upgrade like what i have done or this dosnt affect quality at all - i hope it dosnt - whats weird is i just burned a disc with nerovision and it didnt bookmark it as dvd-rom
i though any burning software i use would make it dvd-rom - i used dvdclone 2 and it worked - i looked around in the settings on nerovision and couldnt find how to make it dvd-rom -i found a setting but it wouldnt let me make any changes - i seen dvd-rom but it was greyed out
who knows - even with Nero recode i cant figure out how to bookmark it
thanks -- what about shrink - does that bookmard it also ?

firmware will not affect the quality of the backup. It basically gives the drive instructions on how to burn different and new medias as they become available.
As far as the bitsetting with Nero, open Nero then click on Nero toolkit then Nero cd-dvd drive speed then click on extra then bitsetting. Set all the dropdown menus to dvd-rom.
You can booktype dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom with DVD Shrink as long as you choose to burn with Nero. After you have clicked backup and selected your drive as the target, click burn settings then put a checkmark in booktype dvd-rom.

hi - thanks - i done that already before i posted - i found it and thought ok -- i can do it this way - then i clicked and its greyed out
it wont let me change anything - but it does show dvd-rom in the grey boxes -- if i put in a dvd - it tells me the disk type but thats it --
under book type - its says N/A - i am curious to see if dvdshrink will allow me to do it - does dvdclone allow you change it somehow - i checked but dosnt seem like it has many options in that area -
i belieave it will bookmark dvd-rom when i burn and it has with dvdclone but i only made one burn since the firmware upgrade - and it worked - then i used nerovision and the disc came out dvd+ as before - i checked around on the options on nerovision and cant find anything that would allow me to change it - and i checked Nero recode also and cant find anything - i am just curious how its working now - and why it works with some programs and not others - in case i need to make it a dvd-rom - i would know which ones to use or not to use -

hey guess what - weird things happen here - i just put in a DVD+RW and decided to erase it with Nero cd dvd speed since i had it open and after i erased it and checked the bookmark again - it didnt give me any options to change it as before but at the bottom it says the disk type
which is DVD+RW and then booktype dvd-rom -- ?
thats weird - i didnt do anything else but erase the disk and format to use it again
any ideas why its this way

I'm running out of ideas and suggestions. It would help if I was more familiar with your drive but I'm not. You could try saving the files to a hdd folder after compressing with whatever and then burn the folder with Nero express. Good luck.

looks like your drive is either a rebadged lite-on or LG. you can try Nero usind the directions I gave in an earlier post in this thread or try DVD Decrypter selecting lite-on or LG as your drive make. You could also try dvdinfopro. Have you checked what your discs after burning are booktyped as using dvd identifier?

OK... heres a stupid question... what is firmware? ive been backing up dvd's a while now... with no trouble at all... but ive noticed alot of post that mention firmware... what the $#@! is it?

Full description not available yet.
Sort of a "operating system of the hardware", an embedded instruction set built-in or flashed into a hardware equipment, such as a router, CDR drive, DVD-ROM drive, washing machine, etc.
see what i mean? that definition... is scratch

i appreciate that.... now that makes alot of sense... i have yet to have any problems from my Sony DRU 810-A... now i did read the part about fixing something thats not broke.... should firmware be something i should look into? what kind of ... lets say.. upgrades... or what-ever does new firmware offer.. basically im trying to understand why i would want to do such a thing.. i have a dvd burner and a dvd rom and a standalone dvd recorder for my television... the only trouble i have had so far out of any of it was transfering the tv recorded dvd's which by the way are dvd- and my burner is dvd+ but i resolved this problem by loading them in my dvd rom.... it will accept the tv recorded dvd's ... so once again... no problems yet... ok... im going on and on again... somebody drop me a line and help me understand more about this firmware...

Hey expresso which firmware update did you download? I got the same drive as you 2500a (firmware V1.0) And im looking for a firmware to flash my drive so it allows booktyping.
