Hello. I was wondering if anyone had experienced any problems with dvd shrink crashing for no apparent reason. I tried to back up a few movies including An Officer & A Gentleman, Steven Seagal's-Black Dawn, and Four Brothers and the software simply crashes when you click the backup button. I ripped the files with DVD Decrypter instead and then tried to shrink and burn them with dvd Shrink and it still crashes the moment you click the backup button even though the files are no longer encrypted are being read from my harddrive. Anyone have any idea whats going on?

Also,is there another way to shrink and burn the files I've already ripped with DVD Decrypter?

Thanks - Aratech

I dubbed both Black Dawn & Four Brothers using Shrink & no problems.
I believe Shrink is choking on the dummy sectors generated from DVD-D.
You should quit using DVD Decrypter since its no longer updated (give DVDFab Decrypter & VOBBlanker a go).

I got Black Hawk Down with nothing, but shrink try running it through VOB Blanker (as stated by monce) if you get continue to get problems it could be a bad press. I can't remember if I had to use VOB Blanker for Four Brothers, or not...another way to 'shrink' is using Nero recode...

I'm still working on this issue. I'm determined to get it to work since I was able make a ton of complete backup copies using only DVD Shrink at one time. I didnt start using DVD Decrypter until DVD Shrink started having problems and now that combination doesnt work either. Let me list the last changes I remember making before all my troubles began.

1) I installed my new Hauppage pvr150 and WinTV.

The audio on my live tv playback was stuttering. I traced it back to a conflict between WinTV and WinDVD. I uninstalled WinDVD and replaced it with PowerDVD. WinTV problem fixed.

2) Ripped data off of another harddrive. I had to disconnect burner and use that ide channel to connect the 3rd hard drive. Ripped data...reconnected burner.

3) Reset my ACPI settings to ACPI Uniprocessor PC mode.

Thats all I've done.

Here's another clue...

I now see a message in dvd shrinks dvd preview window that says "The player is incompatible with the region marking of this disk" It is displayed on a blue screen with white text.

Who wants to take a stab at this? Thanks - Aratech.

Try running anydvd in the backgound.
Its not free but has a 21 day trial.
It is regularly updated and works well with dvd shrink,
And doesnt add any extra steps or procedures.
The new protections will cause this to happen,
Anydvd can and will elimatinate the problem.

Good luck

Aratech,
That message the disk is another region from the burner.
EDIT: Have you been changing the burner region settings as you are only allowed so many and then it lock it to that region

Use as suggested AnyDVD along w/ Shrink or DVDFAB Decrypter and rip the DVD to HD and then process w/Shrink.

If the OS crashes then you have computer conflicts and you need to get those sorted out. D/L a free registry cleaner ( you can Google for One) and clean the registry as those conflicts can cause a computer to crash. You might also uninstall Shrink, re-boot and then re-install after you clean the registry.

I will try to run anydvd in the background and see if that works. About changing the region settings, I have not made any changes to them and they are set to region 1.

Also, I am still able to rip the disks with DVD Decryter but am not able to shrink them since dvd shrink stopped working. If the problem is with the new encryptions, shouldnt dvd decrypter be removing them when I rip the dvd initially?

DVD Decrypter is no longer updated so it will choke on new encryptions.
Any/DvD is frequently updated & you should be fine with newer settings.

Aratech ,
If it is the newer encryption then DVD will not work. You then use DVDFAB Decrypter in it's place. The only one you might have from your list that might give DVDD a problem is the Four Brothers. The crash is caused though by the OS. Have you found a registry cleaner, if not I can recommend a free one: EasyCleaner

I have downloaded a reg cleaner and am doing that now. I will also try DVDFab instead of DVD Decrypter. I'll post the results tonight. Thanks - Aratech

Ensure that you have enough space on your hard drive for the entire process. Clean it up, delete stuff you have not viewed for several months. Archive stuff on removable media. Just leave your drive(s) as free and clear as you can.

Once you exceed your drive(s) capacity, using any program, it's going to tell you it can't do it. There are swap files. there are temp files & so on. The finished product will require more resources than you suspect. Better to have another drive or two that the finished project(s) can be stored on so that you can eliminate all traces of the project on the drive on which they were created. Hope that makes sense.

Good Advice.^^^

I've got about 200 gigs free so that shouldnt be an issue.

****Here's the latest***

I'm still working on cleaning the registry and temp files ect with the program I downloaded. I found 367 entries in the first scan.

Here is how I NOW know for sure that it's the pc that's causing the problem with DVD Shrink...I installed the same program on my second rig. Its an old 667mhz P3 with 768mb of ram and 2 - 20gig hard drives. I was able to rip and shrink "Four Brothers" with no problem whatsoever using ONLY DVD Shrink. No DVDFab or AnyDVD was required. It didnt even take that long considering how old the pc is.

I'm hoping that this reg cleaning will free up what ever is tripping up DVD Shrink on my main rig since I'm now sure that the program itself is capable of doing the job.

It may also help to do a good cleaning of the computer case as well. I try to blow out the inside every couple of months to help the old girl run cooler. It certainly can't hurt. Overheating due to shrinks high CPU usage can cause crashes. I lost a MB from overheating once. Now I keep her cleaned out.

Cheers.

Finally a solution!!! It was none of the causes I speculated. In fact, I dont even know why it works now. I decided to uninstall and re-install Power DVD since I was getting that region setting message in DVD Shrink and viola!...it started working. I must have somehow corrupted the DVD Shrink files when I switched from WinDVD to Power DVD. Comments??

Beats me!
I have used DVD Shrink before. Just re-installed windows XP clean on my laptop [VAIO FS500, sony-schmony] and tried to run DVD Shrink again. But not one blink! Installation seems to go fine, but when I double-click its icon, the hourglass shows for 1 sec. and nothing else happens. Tried it without Antivirus, firewall and pestpatrol running in the background.
Who has the magic word?

So I was bored after I we figured this out so I decided to break it again by updating Nero. After I installed the latest Nero Update it stopped allowing me to burn directly from DVDshrink. The program is still ripping and encoding just fine, I just get an error message from Nero when I try to burn the DVD. I'll be uninstalling Nero and re-installing without the update when I get back from work. Here is the log...

Remove your serial Number.
Nero Version 6.6.1.4 has caused problems and they have not fixed it yet. Revert to version 6.6.0.18 after you uninstall Nero and use Nero Cleantools( all of the tools) to remove Nero completely

I removed the serial #. Sorry about that.

I uninstalled Nero and did a complete reinstall from the disk which contains version 6.6.0.18. Its working again.

Wow, from now on I'll be cautious before making any changes in my system such as installing a new program or an update. You never know what will get broken when you do.

Hey, does anyone have an opinion about the in depth analysis and the 2 pass encoding feature in DVD Shrink. It says if you use that that it will yield a better picture. Is this true? What are your experiences using this method?

Aratech,
You will get better pic but it will take alot longer. You might even double the time it takes you. Shrink is an transcoder not an encoder as there is a big difference. Do the deep analysis and the bigger the file go from sharp to smooth. You can play areound w/ it and figure it out. Also there are many threads on AD concerning this issue

Hey Car.Mike

Just wondering about this version of nero you recommended...

Nero-6.6.0.18

It seems to have slowed down my burner some. It takes twice as long to burn an audio disk now. It used to take about 2 1/2 minutes and now its closer to 4 or 5 minutes. I also noticed that it limits my DVDR speed to 8X when it used to be 16X. CDR speed was also reduced from 52X to 48X. Any idea why?? Thanks -Aratech

Put the disk you are going to use in the drive and let Nero recog it and your speed should be back up. You can check it in the speed control. If the speed you need is there then you can burn that fast.
