dvd shrink slow / Explorer hog?

I suddenly have a problem with DVD Shrink 3.2 (Rate: 544KB/s)taking hours to complete what took minutes before. I uninstalled, downloaded fresh and reinstalled DVD Shrink. IDE controller DMA set OK. Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. Nero on/off doesn't matter. I ran AVG, Spybot SD, Adaware SE with no difference. Task manager check showed Explorer.exe hogging all the CPU (955MHz AMD Athlon 1G Ram). If I end the explorer.exe process I get Shrink back up to 3,100KB/s.
I checked another machine and Shrink runs fine without the Exploreer.exe drain on the CPU.
Any suggestions appreciated.

If your internet explorer exe. is running at 100% when you aren't actively accessing webpages, than you have more problems than DVD Shrink running slow.
It sounds like your computer is being used by a third party.
This is not a DVD Shrink caused problem. You may be being hijacked for DOS attacks. Millions of computers are Trojan hacked and anti-virus and spysweepers aren't even close to up to date enough to stop it.
Explorer should NOT be taking up enough CPU when not in use to affect usage of any other programs.
Have you tried possibly running Trendmicro sweep, it is a free online computer sweep and it is very good. It has helped me out of trouble before that Norton and spysweeper couldn't.

Juicer try to disable your virus scanner when using DVD Shrink, I had DVD Shrink problem a few months ago, where reinstalled it a few times and try all kind of thing with no solution, I disable my virus program and my problems were over...best regards Latin124

Welcome to the forum. If you de-fragged the HD and you are not in PIO Mode, your HD is not failing, Ram Memory is seated properly and the cables are seated properly then you might have a trojan. Check the cables and Ram before preceeding any further
It sounds like you have advertising software that you did not authorize has made it on to your computer and it is calling home giving them info. Do you have Grokster, Bearshare , LimeWire , Net2Phone or KaZaA or anything like those programs loaded on the computer. If so do you have any of these processes running and make sure they are spelled exactly like I typed it:
Dlder.exe and ExPlorer.exe .
Both of those are trojans but the spelling looks real similiar to Windows genuine processes
My neighbors college kid had the same problem and it took me about 1 1/2 hours to research and figure out how to blow this off the computer w/o doing a re-format and re-install of the HD but I probably should have just re-formatted and re-loaded all of the programs except for Limewire

Ahh
Didn't even think of freeware accepted adverts LOL.
I removed all of that from my computer after having to reformat due to Kazaa downloads.
I don't use any of that freeware anymore (don't even download free smilie packages).
I only use an advert free version of Limewire now. Just to keep my P2P up.

Keep those cards and letters comin' in. Nope, I don't have any of those Grokster, Limewire etc running. I started to keep an eye on the task manager and as soon as I start a Backup with DVD Shrink, explorer.exe heads for the buffet table and chomps at the CPU. I think I've run everything on this computer but the 4 minute mile to no avail. I ran HiJack this and will try and get a pro feedback. Hep me puleeze!

If you ran HiJack and have posted it on their site they should be able to tell you what is causing that problem and how to cure it. I am still betting on a virus ,Malware or ET calling Home and I'll vote for ET as the problem.

For the record, I don't recommend using Internet Explorer. I think it's the worst browser out there. I find Mozilla FireFox to be the best browser out there right now. I have IE disabled on my PC.

I know alot of people using FireFox. I have never had a problem with IE.
I believe you can help yourself tremendously with IE if you block the Windows Messenger program from the internet. This is not a real messenger, it is just an open port waiting to be compromised. Since my re-format and blocking of the messenger, I have had no problems at all.

The explorer.exe is Windows Explorer not Internet Explorer. When I end the explorer.exe process in Task Manager, all of the Desktop shortcuts disappear until I reboot. Somehow on this computer Shrink DVD affects the way Windows Explorer operates with a net negative affect on Shrink DVD speed.

You also can d/l a free registry cleaner and try cleaning the registry. It is a shot while you wait for the log to be read as that might take a few days or hopefully quicker. Will you post back the results of what they find?

Just did a D/L of PC Tool Registry Mechanic and used the free portion with no success... yeah I know I didn't gert iot all but I don't want to spend until I've exhausted the other options. Not knowing where I'm going, I can easily head off in the exact wrong direction!

I wasn't on the web if that's what you mean but as I tried to explain before, explorer.exe refers to Microsoft Windows Explorer and NOT Internet Explorer. When I end the explorer.exe process under Task Manager, the CPU drain goes away and Shrink DVD works at lightning speed.
The unfortunate result of ending the explorer.exe process is that all desktop icons disappear and I can't run any other (unopened) programs until I reboot.

dude i had the same problem. the thing is that my hp laserjet wouldn't allow me to finish burning cds. it would go on for hours and never complete. i disconnected my printer and wala!! everything was fine. however, i formatted my pc and i connected the printer. no more problems. i use "microsoft antispyware" and "avg". make sure u dont have norton cause there is something called CCAPP.exe that runs with norton. it makes the pc so slow u will start to kick the sides. if, by any chance, u kicked the side, check if ure ram is connected properly cause it will mess around with the pc if it isn't.
BTW i hope im not too late with replying

Oh no, Saad, you're not too late in replying. Wait one second while I gather the pieces of my former computer beneath my window.
Actually, I'm glad you solved your problem but in my case, it was pointed out on another website that when I replaced Windows ME with XP Pro on my weakling CPU (Athlon 1G with 1G Ram), XP Pro sucked the life blood out of the CPU.
I discovered that I could use Task Manager in XP to end the process explorer.exe and get the necessary CPU processing to get back to speed for Shrink. Once finished, use Task Manager file/new process(run)/type in explorer.exe and the desktop and all else comes back.
I may reinstall the old HD with Windows ME on it as it is much less demanding of the CPU.
Hope this helps others websearching similar problems.

Are you running an anti virus program when you encode? I was having the same problem as you and it ended when i de-activated my anti virus. The anti virus was using all the cpu through explorer and left little cpu for shrink. Try it, it worked for me.

hey if anyone is still reading this thread here is a quick fix to your explorer.exe hog problem. if your explorer is usin all your cpu cycles and you have programs running that you dont want to end to do a reboot. just do this hit ctrl+alt+del find explorer.exe and end its process. and when you do this yes your windows and taskbar will dissappear. but dont freak out if task manager closed when you did it just open it back up ctrl+alt+del. and click on file then click on new task (run). then type in explorer.exe and then you get back windows with all running programs. and explorer is running normally. the problem your are having is with AVI. files. dont believe me just google it. explorer.exe to much cpu AVI. i would tell you how to fix it but i cant remember.

hey and here is another fix that seems to have just worked for me. I have all my AVI files in one folder and it is about 90 gigs. i watched task manager closly as i opened the drive i keep my movies in and programs and such and opened every one then when i opened my movies folder it freaked out. this what i dont to fix. i just right clicked on my movies folder down to properties and then clicked the customize button. then in the first drop down box i selected documents for any type option and it seems to work great. you dont get thumbnails or folders that show little picture of whats inside the folder. but hey who cares right. hope this helps.
