I can "open disc" just fine using DVD Shrink, but when i click on "back up" the hourglass appears and after "thinking" for a bit, the whole DVD Shrink application just closes?

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, multiple times, and from multiple sources, and even different movies, but still the same.

Could someone please help? Thanks in advance.

It looks like DVDshrink can't handle the copy protection that's on the disk. Instead of DVDshrink, try ripping the movie to your HDD using DVDFab decrypter, then use shrink to open the files with and proceed as usual.

get it here:
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

here's a guide on use (If needed):
http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvdfab_decrypter.php

If shrink gives you a problem with opening the files produced by DVDFab decrypter then you'll need to use VobBlanker to get the job done. VobBlanker will correct any file structure porblems created by the copy protection, once corrected DVDshrink will have no problems with opening the files and processing them as instructed by you.

Once DVDFab has ripped the files to your HDD, you'll now need to process them thru VobBlanker, VobBlanker will create a new set of files corrected of structural problems that you'll need to also store on your HDD;

NOTE: Create a folder on your desktop and give it the name of the movie your backing up...ie. Flightplan_movie..., next create another folder inside that one and name it VIDEO_TS, this is where you'll direct VobBlanker to store the files it creates in.

Run DVDshrink once VobBlanker is done and open the files created by Blanker (use open files tab), once shrink imports the files you can proceed a usual with your backup.

get vobblanker here:
http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

Looks like you've got a corrupted DVD Shrink file or version. Try to download it again from mrbass.org, here http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/ -- then uninstall your current DVD Shrink, then reinstall the new one to see if that'll resolve the issue.

Good luck!!

Rip the offending movie to HDD first using DVDFab Decrypter, then proceed with DVD Shrink via Johnl123's guide and suggestions.

I uninstalled my version and redownloaded from suggested site and retried. Still nothing.

I never had this problem on my old computer, i could do everything very simply in Shrink, so I would like to try to keep it that way. Shouldn't be any reason i couldn't right?

DVDshrink is no longer updated so it can't handle the new sony or microvision copy protection being placed on some of the new movie releases, this can cause it to stop encoding, produce an error condition, or lockup and shutdown. To get around this, the procedure described above will be necessary if you want to get a backup on disk, the tools described are free and do work.

If you're willing to pay for something that can make the backup process alot easier, try using AnyDVD. AnyDVD is a driver that runs in the backround helping DVDshrink crack the copy protection and produce a backup, it comes with a 21 day free trial before you have to buy it to keep it.

Check it out here:

I'm sure it's not a dvd issue. I have tried the same exact dvds on my old computer, and they work fine.

The only thing i can think of is that this is a brand new computer that i built. Everything works super, but shrink??????

Here is one of your last resource, since nobody has mentioned. For example: the movie I'm going to transcode/compress with DVD Shrink is DOMINO, and I want DVD Shrink to transcode then put my final VIDEO_TS file/movie into my Hard Drive. Look at picture for reference.

If you've done the above and your DVD Shrink still crash and or it just closed by itself, then there is definitely something wrong inside your OS/system that conflicts with DVD Shrink.

Thanks for the suggestion, but like i have said numerous times and IS THE PROBLEM i'm having, I cannot click on "back up" and get anything. When i click back up, i get the hourglass, then the whole program closes. The normal "back up dvd" window as you show does not come up.

This is my problem.

It sounds to me like you have a bad download of DVDShrink. Try a fresh download and install.

Get it here: http://mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

See if that helps.

It's possible that your ASPI drivers may be corrupt, you can correct this by installing the ones located here at ForceASPI located here:

It might help if we have more info. Nero Infotool does a good job of taking a system snapshot. I have it here:

http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/InfoTool.zip

or you can get it from Nero:

http://nero.com/nero7/enu/Info_Tool.html

Install and run, save and then post the .txt file.

@shag45

Well then throw us a bone. Provide some form of significant details of what is going on, other than it's just closing. Logs, etc. System specs, etc. There has to be a conflict with your OS somewhere or shrink would not behave in this fashion.

Sorry, but I am not the most computer literate user.....I just built a new computer: Windows XP home SP2, 1 gig ram, lite-on light scribe dvd rw, 250 gb hard drive, msi motherboard.............and have had the mentioned problem, ever since downloading DVD Shrink.

Clicking on "back up" after "opening the disc" brings about the hour glass icon, then the whole DVD Shrink window closes..........I have taken the exact disc to my old computer (hp, windows xp sp2) and everything works fine.

Hope this helps.

Hey I was having the same problem. I uninstalled Nero. I think it was 6.6 and once I uninstalled it, DVD Shrink began to work like it was supposed to. I haven't reinstalled my older version of Nero, yet. But, I'm pretty sure that's what was causing the problem.

Why would Nero be the problem. A lot of us that use Shrink set it to burn with Nero. I have 6.6 ultra version and it works fine with Shrink.

Those links I posted were for Nero Infotool, NOT Shrink. This will allow you to give us the system information we need.

I see that i am using Nero OEM SUITE 3 6.6......would this cause any problems?

I uninstalled shirnk and neeo, just put shrink back and when i clicked on "back up" everything appeared fine.

I then put the Nero back on and now i have the same problem again?

Are those Nero "info tools" jsut for version 7.0?

The Info tool will work on any system and you don't even need Nero 6 or 7 installed. It doesn't matter what version is or is not installed.

If you are running an OEM version of Nero then you very well could have problems. An OEM version of Nero is usually a software CD that comes bundled with a new drive or computer.

I always considered these as nothing more than a teaser. The OEMs come in different formats but in general they always seem to be missing critical components and plug-ins that allow you to burn.

Most of my friends who burn do not use Nero or even have it installed on their PC. They use DVD Shrink to rip and compress with and then burn with DVD Decrypter.

Until you get the fully registered version of Nero I recommend you use Decrypter or its more up to date relative, ImgBurn to burn with.

Decrypter can be set as the target in Shrink so it will open at the correct time to burn your DVD. You can also "trick" Shrink into opening ImgBurn to burn with automatically.

Your problem with Shrink and your OEM Nero may be because you have Shrink set to open Nero to burn with. Because it is missing a required plug-in, it fails.

Make sure you have the box to "Enable burning with Nero" unchecked.

This box is located here in Shrink:

At the top left, click "Edit" then click "Preferences".
Click the "File I/O" tab.
Uncheck the "Enable burning with Nero" box.

Hopefully you have DVD Decrypter installed so when you start the backup process, you can select your drive and burn with DVD Decrypter. That will come up when you click the Backup! button.
