Im following the guide on this site.

I renamed my pics 01 to 12

When I place them in the root they do not show the BMP icon it stays as a file icon. They dont look like the pics on this link

http://www.psp-hacks.com/pspersonalize-howto.php

What am I doing wrong?

I dont know what you mean,
why do you need it to show up as a bmp?
all you need to do is make sure your pic has the following attributes
a 24-bit Bitmap (BMP)
<= 150KB in size
<= 300x170 resolution

Then the psppersonalize will do the rest, If all the above are correct the background would work fine

If your icons arent showing up properly you are getting a buffer exploit
this means your picture is not
<= 150KB in size
Make sure it is.

Did you make this background yourself?
Open it up in paint, and check the size again. 300x170 not psps native 480X272
Youve stuck me on the background Q man dont know how to help
www.psp-hacks.com has alot of nice backgrounds which should work.

Stock backgrounds are for ppl who accidently flashed out thier old ones, dont worry wont happen unless you really want it to.

almost 4am here im going to sleep cya and good luck

jaskaran, any program that messes with the psp's flash runs the risk of bricking it, tho it is very unlikely, it can happen.
mph gameloader, psp set, psp personalize.. all of those could possibly do it, but you'd have to be a super noob to do that, if you follow instructions you dont have to worry about it

I use pspset and it wont run without the AC adaptor in, so thats its security against bricking.

Pspset asks u to plug in the AC adapter??? Since when??? ... i guess that maybe when ur battery is relatively low. I use flashmod vr.2, it's cool.. and makes the background wavey lines dissapear oh yeah =)

pspset will brick if you accidentally try and change something without the right file you need to change it or something i read.. so yeah, be careful... other than that, its pretty simple.

and i change my wallpaper with pspset with no AC adapter pretty sure

its naturally going to become bigger. JPEG by definition are compressed images. Going from jpeg to bmp of same resolution will always result in a bigger file.
As for the wallpaper. It can get bigger, as long as it stays under 150 its ok.
So if your pic goes from 76kb to 149kb, that is fine and normal

Ive had that problem too, i had a jpeg that was 80.4kb and when i converted to 24 bmp it went to 382kb.
I installed it anyway and it worx but my icons dont show up as they normally do i see white boxes where my icons are supposed to be

How does one make the 382kb bmp smaller? Its the right size and everything.

well the only way i kno is if the original pic was in jpeg, you would open photoshop click save as and click jpeg and reduce the quality of the picture, this would reduce the size of the original picture which would help for when you turn it into a bmp
