For some reason, when I the burning process starts, it says book type to dvd-rom only the sony discs. But on the TDK, Princo, and Fujifilm, it doesnt say it. Can someone tell me why this is happening?

hey borhan, my friend put the drive in for me, and i am a newbie, and i dont kno what the brand of the drive is. It is weird also because the computer will not read any of the backups except Sony's which are +R's and -R's. ALL discs work on my dvd players but like i said only the sony's will read, and not the other brands. Is there neway to find out what brand my dvd-rom drive is b/c i dont kno it.

Nero Info tool and DVD Decrypter will tell you what burner you have and what is the current firmware.

Is booktyping to dvd-rom really any better than just leaving it at dvd+/- ?

First, you can only book-type the DVD+Rs.
And yes, it is much better. DVD-ROM is the same format like the original DVDs, so you will have greater compatibility.

Like you were told, use DVD Decrypter or Nero Info tool to tell you what burner and what firmware you have. Some burners will not recognize all kind of media, especially if firmware is not updated.

It is not the burner, that I dont know what brand it is. It is the reader. The only thing it says is 16X/48X DVD-ROM

If you use DVD Decrypter or Nero info tool, it will tell you what burner and what reader you have, and what firmware. We need to know what firmware your burner has. The reader is not involved in the burning/booktyping process, and from your post it seems that is the problem, booktyping, or media compatibility:
