I've read through a few manuals.Good stuff. However what I dont udnerstand is this...

Why do you combine DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink to Backup and burn

DVD Shrink backups to the hard drive and burns to a dvd too...

Also doesn't dvd decryptor do the same on its own too?

What are the differences in the methods...

thanks!

ok wait... DVD Shrink does not burn on its own.

I think I'm getting the combination of software somewhat.

DVD decryptor cannot compress? but DVD Shrink can?

But, Dvd decryptor can back up just like DVD Shrink can -according to the manuals. So what makes you choose one over the other?

omar1 hi :)
dvdshrink is not a burn engine, you need decrypter.....Nero....imageburn which do have burn engines to work with shrink, after you have used it to compress decrypt or reauthor
shrink uses decrypter to drop to HDD
decrypter drops to and burns from HDD
imageburn burns from HDD

Shrink doesn't have a burn engine so you need either Nero or Decrypter to autoburn. Decrypter can handle copy protection that Shrink can't so in those cases you would rip to your hd 1st w/ Decrypter then open the files in Shrink. Decrypter can rip and burn in iso mode. If the movie is over 4.38 gig you'll need a dual layer burner and dual discs or use comression (where Shrink comes in).
But neither program is updated anymore so there are movies that neither can do w/o some help. Anydvd is a great program that runs in the background breaking the copy protection and can be used w/ both. Catch - not free but you can try for 21 days free. A free alternative is Dvdfab Decrypter - a ripper only that will handle the newer movies. Once ripped you can then open and process the ripped files thru Shrink.
Here's links for anydvd and dvdfab decrypter:

DVD Decrypter removes the copy protection from a DVD and copies it to the hard drive.

Often, the DVD files add up to more than 4.5 gigs or so, and, if you want to use the inexpensive DVD blanks, the files have to be compressed. That's what Shrink does.

When shrink is finished, it can be set to call in Decrypter, which will now burn the files to a DVD blank.

There are variations in all this, and the on-line sites do a good job of telling you what all your options are.

Warning: Decrypter is no longer supported and some newer DVDs have copy protection that it won't handle. Then you need something else.

I use DVD43, which is updated to handle most of the new protections. I still use Decrypter in additon because I'm used to it and I like its options.

Dvd shrink has no burn engine. It will use other burn engines like nero/copytodvd/dvd decrypter/and maybe IMGburn?

It takes longer to rip using dvd decryper/then compressing with DVD Shrink. You are correct, much quicker using DVD Shrink to rip/compress/and let it autoburn with Nero or those other burn programs I mentioned. When you click the backup tab in dvd shrink/look at your target device-open it up to see which program is doing the burning.I have burn with Nero checked.

On the newer encryptions,DVD Shrink may have a problem with them. DVD Decrypter may work, but I use AnyDVD by slysoft in the background and backup in my usual process.

Dvd decrypter has 2 main modes: File mode-which is when a DVD-9 is being compressed to fit a blank DVD-5-using DVD Shrink to compress.

And Mode ISO read/write. This mode is for non compressed backups like DVD-9 to DVD-9 or DVD-5 to DVD-5.Read to hard drive/locate those mds files and burn.
Much quicker than using DVD Shrink when no compression is needed.

When backup process speed counts, the size of the original dvd does make a difference between which programs you use.

If you have a DVD-9 and you use a DL DVD, you don't need DVD Shrink, you can just ripp the movie to your HDD in ISO mode and then burn , using just DVD Decrypter. Samr thing when you have the movie on a DVD-5. However, if you want to put a DVD-9 an a singel layer DVD, then you need to use DVD Shrink to shrink it, as DVD Decrypter does not do that.

You must know that DVD Decrypter has not been updated latey and might not be able to handle the newer encryptions by itaself. I would also download DVDFab Decrypter and VobBlanker.

ADDED: Jeez, I'm so slow!

ok it makes more sense now. Thanks!

Although, you can't play with the menu and remove parts in DVD Decryptor like you could in DVD Shrink though too, right?

So you would use:

DVD Decryptor - if you want to just burn the whole disc as is (assuming the space on the original and the target DVD is equivelent)? I guess you can also, copy the entire disc onto the HD and then take it back into SHrink to remove parts and then burn back in DVD decryptor if you did want to remove some things?

DVD shrink - if you'll need to compress, but you'll need to take it back into a burning software to get it on DVD?

If you do need to use DVD fab will it tke the place of DVD Decrypter in this process?

Another q:
I did a back up using DVD Shrink just taking the widescreen title and then I burned in a 3rd party software. When I load the DVD in a standalone player, the player shows all of the source files, but does play when I hit play. Is there a way I could stop it form shoing source files and make it auto start when it's popped in?

thanks everyone.

DVDFab Decrypter will only take the place in the ripping process, the decyption. It will just put the movie on your HDD. After that, you will have to use DVD Shrink and some burning software. DVDFab Decrypter does not burn.

Another function that DVD Decripter has, is that you can rip movie only. That will save you some time.

I really don't know why your DVD does not autoplay. What 3rd burning software did you use?

I think I realized why...?

It seems that the folder structure AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS are not being set on the DVD. When i explored the DVD in my PC the source files are coming up in the root with no folders. (I thought I created those?)

Yes

Yep again!

Shrink will autoburn w/ decrypter if you have it installed & pick this option once you click back up - see below:

Shrink will also autoburn if you have Nero by default - unless you change it.

As for the autoburn on your copy sounds like you did a data disc.

If it shows all the source files, you might have done a data disc. How did you do it , again, what software?

ADDED: But I guess Binkie was on to that faster than me:~)!

hmmm.. i guess then. I used something called easy dvd/cd burner. it didn't prompt me for any options. I'll try other software.

I haven't had trouble copying using DVD shrink but I tried using DVD Decryptor and at 97% it threw an error saying something like I/O sector problem [abort, ignore, or retry] anyway it messed up so I'm going to trying DVD FAB...
Can you copy using DVDFab, shrink using DVD Shrink and then burn using DVD Decryptor?

What burning software do you guys recommend? Nero 7 gave me some problems on my XP so I uninstalled it.

also, is there any difference with burning IFO, VOB, BUP files as opposed to burning an ISO. I see that DVD shrink creates IFO's and DVD Decryptor creates ISO's?
I'm not getting the difference?

You can do that. other than that, I can only say I have used Nero to burn, sio I can't recommend anything else from my experience. But the 3 above software should do the job.

Yes, there is a difference. DVD Decrypter will only burn ISO. DVD Shrink will create an ISO, if you want to burn with DVD Decrypter, or can create a Video_TS folder with a bunch of VOB,IFO BUP files if you want to burn with some other software, like Nero for example.

DVD Decrypter can also create ISO, if you rip under ISO mode, or can create the same Video_ts folder if you rip under "File Mode"

Everything is MUCH clearer to me. Doing a bunch of test copies and burns along with these respones have helped me better understand the relationship between the programs and the entire process.

Thanks everyone!

DVD Shrink can open an ISO, if that is what you try to do:

Or you can use a virtual drive:~)
