First of all, let me apologize in advance for the probable length of this message, but I want to describe my problem in as much detail as possible to ensure that anyone reading this has all of the information needed to hopefully come up with a solution. OK, here goes -- I have been using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter for some time now, with no problems whatsoever, great programs. Last nite, however, was a different story. When attempting to backup Friends Season whatever disc whatever (and yes I also attempted to backup a number of other Friends DVD's with the same results I'm about to tell you about, and yes, I have backed up a number of Friends DVD's with no problems at all prior to this), after selecting "Open Disc" the results showed the Main Movie as anything from over 4 hours to over 5 in length, which is much longer than it should have been. After numerous attempts to correct this problem, including uninstalling DVD Shrink and downloading and reinstalling it several times, I pressed on, only to notice a different display than I was used to for the "Select Target File", plus it no longer made the file an ISO file no matter what I tried, yet it did not give an error message when I continued. Now, in what I consider the main problem encountered, after selecting "Full Backup", after sucessfuly analysing and encoding, when it got to the actual burning of the DVD it displayed a message stating "Checking Discs. Please insert an empty disc to write to....Media Requested: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL. Media detected in Drive: Unknown. Phase: Checking Discs", beneath which it diplayed the familiar "progress bar", which went from left to right, then repeated, and repeated, showing no signs of stopping no matter how long I let it continue. I tried it with numerous discs with the same results, and yes, the discs I was using are the same discs I have been using with absolutely no problems, from the same stack, good ole Sony discs. No change there. Well, there it is, for what it's worth. Any help anyone can provide will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try updating your burner's firmware, even though you say you haven't changed the brand of media you're using, something about it has changed and your burner is having a problem recognizing it and therefore unable to write to it successfully (if using sony disks, stick to the +R variety, they're good ones).

If your creating an ISO image of the movie, make sure DVD decrypter is installed on your PC if you plan on autoburning with it. If you're not seeing certain menu options in shrink when backing up, make sure you don't have any operating system skinning programs installed and running, they have been known to hide cretain options in shrink. Also check all of shrink's options and make sure there are as they were before you uninstalled it.

Another ripper option is, instead of using DVDshrink first, use DVDFab decrypter to rip the video files to your HDD.

Get it here: DVDFab Decrypter 2.9.7.2
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

Here's a guide on use (if needed):
http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvdfab_decrypter.php

It's updated to keep pace with the new sony and/or microvision copy protection, use it to rip the video files to your HDD (it's a whole movie ripper so you're getting everything on the DVD ripped to your HDD). Once it's done run shrink and open the files created by DVDFab decrypter and proceed as usual at this point.
