Not sure this is the right forum, but I hope so. I have Nero 7, and downloaded DVD Shrink. I have 2 problems. One is when I open up the folders. The audio folder shows as empty. Does this mean that once I use DVD Shrink to get the movie to fit the disk, that I won't have any sound? I have tried to shrink the movie 3 times and each time I come up with the same error. Plus it tells me my disk isn't big enough to copy the movie too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks much,
moe

If you have the full version of Nero7 then I would suggest you try using Nero Recode which does the same job as DVD Shrink.

Audios folder are always empty - at one time (I think it goes) dvd players needed both to play the dvd. Newer movies you'll just see the video_ts folder which has everything you need - movie & sound.
What's the error you are receiving? Shrink can't handle the newer movies by itself and if your backing up an original dvd that it can't handle that may be part of your problem. If that's the case you'll need something like AnyDVD running in the background to handle the copy protection. With AnyDVD you can use recode like Gwen suggested.

Nero Recode will ony work if the files have already been decrypted or if you're using it with anydvd as binkie stated.

binkie is right on the money, it's more than likely that the DVD has copy protection on it that shrink can't handle. If you want to keep it free, instead of using shrink to rip the video files to your HDD, try using DVDFab decrypter. DVDFab is updated to keep up with the newer copy protection and will more than likely be able to rip the files to your HDD, it's a whole movie ripper so you'll still need DVDshrink or Nero Recode to reauthor if desired and shrink the files to fit on a single layer disk.

Once DVDFab is done, run shrink or nero recode and open the files, browse to the VIDEO_TS folder created by DVDFab and choose it. At this point you should be able to use shrink or nero recode as you normally would.

Get DVDFab decrypter here...
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

If shrink or nero gives you a problem with opening the files created by DVDFab, then you'll need to process them thru vobblanker first, then use shrink or nero on the files vobblanker created.

Get vobblanker here...

With respect gwen,

The error displayed by shrink is more than likely caused by a copy protection issue that shrink is unable to cope with, by using DVDFab decrypter or anydvd, the error should no longer be an issue.

But you're right, knowing what it is would be of help.

@Binkie7, Karen wasnt one of the Nero7 versions giving problems with DVD Shrink.

@moe2006, which version of Nero7 are you currently using. It will be something like 7.0.0.0

Just a small point...
The AUDIO_TS folder is there as part of the fileset required by the DVD Specification. It is intended for use when recording audio DVDs.

From SearchStorage.com:
Quote:
Almost all of the space on a DVD video disc is devoted to containing video data. As a consequence, the space allotted to audio data, such as a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, is severely limited. A lossy compression technique - so-called because some of the data is lost - is used to enable audio information to be stored in the available space, both on standard CDs and DVD-Video disks. In addition to using lossless compression methods, DVD-A also provides more complexity of sound by increasing the sampling rate and the frequency range beyond what is possible for the space limitations of CDs and DVD-Video. DVD-Audio is 24-bit, with a sampling rate of 96 kHz; in comparison, DVD-Video soundtrack is 16-bit, with a sampling rate of 48 kHz, and standard audio CD is 16-bit, with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz.

Nero isn't even in the equation yet, the error is being produced by shrink not Nero.

Quote2:

"Plus it tells me my disk isn't big enough to copy the movie too"

This would indicate the shrink is displaying a red bar across the top of its window indicating that the file size too big to fit on a DVD-5 disk.

@gwen
The last one I remember causing a problem w/ shrink was 6.6.1.4 - I remember earlier b/4 this a version of ultra caused some problem but there my memory eludes me on what the problem or version was.
That's why I asked for the error - actually now that I think about it should have added what's the movie, is this the original and if not what kind of file/dvd is it? So moe2006 which movie etc are you doing?

@fasfrank
Txs for the info!!

Sorry has taken so long to respond to every one. The error is that VTS _04_0 and the other VTS_04_0 is not the same and should be. Therefore the disk may or may not play. I am using Nero 7.0.8.2 which is the only one I could find to download. I wanted a different version. Oh, it is also the Ultra Edition. And DVD Shrink 3.2. The dvd I am trying is The Dukes Of Hazzard Unrated. DVD Shrink says that it is encoding it and it takes approximately 2+ hours for it to do that. Then it says as long as the bar is green at the top I can use a DVD+R, but when I put it in to copy it says my disk isn't large enough. So I never really reach Nero, the one time that I did, it kept saying that the file couldn't be read. So, I'm not sure.
Thanks all,
Moe

@moe2006
If you follow the suggestions I gave, you should be ok (re-rip the video files to your HDD using DVDFab from the original DVD if possible).

Here's a guide to using VobBlanker if you need to use it:
http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/37_1.html

Worst case, you may need to process the files thru IFOedit, but I believe that the DVDFab + vobBlanker combo should do the trick:

On the DVFab, when I went to the link you gave me and tried to dl it, it came up with a page saying that I wasn't authorized to view that page. Is there any other way of getting the program?

Thanks,

One other thing may be amiss - shrink saying 2+ hours to encode. Depending on your pc specs and if you have deep analysis checked - that seems a bit long. Check and make sure you are in dma mode - here's a guide for help:

There is so much advise on this thread, you gotta make it work!
Yet, I will make a suggestion...
Binkie might be right about the 2+ hours to encode, check the DMA. But, If you try to rip the movie with DVD Shrink, it will be slower, as it has to also be decrypted, not just encoded(and it will be slower and slower and finaly quit if it can not break the encryption).
The easiest way(and probably the fastest) is to rip it with DVDFab Decrypter, and, since you have Nero 7, encode it with Nero Recode 2, which is twice faster than Shrink, and you get great quality.

Ok, I downloaded DVDFAb, and when I try to run it, it says: DVDFAb is not a valid Win32 application. So it won't run it. I saved it to my documents. Also to my desktop and it still won't open. I get the same error each time. Here is the complete error message: C:\documents and Settings\Hp_Owner\Desktop\DVDFabDecrypter29.exe is not a valid Win32application. I get almost the same error when just trying to run the application without saving. I'm really sorry to keep bothering you all with this. I have turned off all firewalls, antivirus's etc. I will keep trying though. Thanks for all your help.

Did you try to download it from a different link? It can be a bad, corrupt download.

Remove all the unnecessary audios to help with compression - just keep AC3 5.1. You can also try reauthor in shrink to do just the movie only.
Another good ripper is DVD Decrypter - though no longer updated like fab decrypter. It will handle some of the movies shrink can't. Then there's AnyDVD which handles anything as mentioned above - not free but has a 21 day free trial. Here's some links:
http://slysoft.com (anydvd)
http://mrbass.org./dvdrip/ (dvd decrypter)
Let's us know how it turns out!

Ok, 1. If Shrink can "open" the disc...then you don't have a copy protection issue and don't need DVDFab. If Shrink can analysis it..first with a quick scan then deep analysis-you're good so far.

check under the compression setting tab- select "automatic" the bar at the top should be green. If it is; this DVD will fit a DVD-5, if the bar is mostly green but turns red toward the right end...try selecting "dvd-9" or custom compression...or just leave it. Un-check the boxes under audio that you don't need/want. see if that works. I'm assuming you are trying to backup to your Harddrive before Burning with Nero..the direct burn can be a pain...are you sure you have enough space on your harddrive for the files? You're gonna need atleast 4.7 gig of free space to write the files to. Even if Shrink pops up the warning that it may be too large to fit a DVD-- You're using Nero 7 with Recode...just Analysis again with Nero RECODE and slide the Video Quality back alittle and It will fit, or use a DVD-9 DL Disc.

Ok, everyone how dumb can I be. Remember I told you that I couldn't open DVDFab after saving it to my computer. Well, why not hit the run button when the download starts instead of the save button?? BIG DUUUHHHH here. So, I got it to download. Ran my disk through it, which took a little bit of time, then opened DVD Shrink (that only took 5 minutes for it to encode), opened the files, and clicked backup. Then there was a small box that appeared with a couple choices, one was burn with Nero and gave my dvd drive. Guess what? It actually burnt to the disk that I have. The only problem is that the preveiws have no sound, but the movie itself does. My question is this: I didn't uncheck anything when I ran DVD Shrink, so is it normal not to have sound with the previews? Not that it really matters, as long as the movie has it. Just curious. Did shrink only take 5 minutes this time because I used DVDFab first? Before when I would use Shrink it would take over 2 hours to encode?

Thanks everyone for being so patient with me.

Moe
