It seems like the new dvdfab decrypter 2973 did not work for this movie but the older version 2972 seem to work fine. No vobblanker was needed AFAIK. After just dvdshrink and copy with your favorite software.

@buffster - i don't have DVDFab Express, just DVDFab Decrypter. all you do with DVDFab Decrypter is let it rip the entire DVD to hard disc, then fire up DVD Shrink and point it towards the folder that DVDFab Decrypter wrote to. just use DVD Shrink as normal as it's working with a whole copy of the DVD that now lives on the hard disc. you can then take out the DVD.

I may be out of luck here, but I bought Geisha yesterday before heading out on a trip. I ripped it to my laptop hard drive using DVD Fab Decrypter Express 2.9.7.3, planning to later compress it and burn it to watch it on the road.
As I don't like taking originals with me when I travel, the disc is resting safely back at home. Unfortunately, when I went to compress the files tonight I found what's been documented on several threads, that there's something special with this disc.
I've tried VOB Blanker, blanking out VOB_1* but Shrink still wouldn't open the files. I've tried AnyDVD's "Rip Video DVD to Hard Disk" to no avail.
My question is, is there something I can do with these files to apply the AnyDVD decryption or am I stuck waiting a week till I get back home and starting with AnyDVD and the oridiginal disc?
If there's an answer I'll be much more popular with my wife, whose movie request this was. Thanks!

P.S. I moved this post from another thread because the situation being described here seems closer to what I've got (trying to Shrink from DVD Fab Express-ripped files on hard drive). I read the forum rules and saw no cross-posting, and I apologize if deleting a post from one thread and moving it to another still counts as cross-posting.

@jbsjbs - nice one with editing out the one post and then starting another; if only more ppl would do that. we haven't got this movie here yet (UK) so all i can suggest is try those other links i posted up near top of thread.. unless you have of course :)

I have tried the suggestions in other threads as well. Mostly I'm just unclear on whether the files DVD Fab Decrypter Express generated are still useful, or whether the fact that I was not running AnyDVD when I extracted them means that I'm stuck waiting till I get back and have the physical disc again.
It appears that AnyDVD has a mode to work from files on the hard drive, but that did not seem to do the trick. Are there any emulation tools you'd recommend for mounting the folders as a DVD and trying again?

Okay I backed this one up did the whole first disk, usually I just do the movie. Used AnyDVD in the background and then ripped to the HDD using DVD Decrypter. AnyDVD blanked out the whole VTS_15. Opened the file using Shrink and substituted a still image for it, the I believe is blank frames before the movie and may also refer to the unreferenced cell. Movie backed up fine burned with Nero and is playing great.
Movie only is at 71% compression with all the junk it comes in a 61%.

I had this problem. Used Fab, tried to use shrink, and clicked just main movie. It only had about 1 GB movie ran for about 15 min. I was going to install Fab Platinum to see if it would work. I wonder is Sony has found a new way to mess it up. Help

I'm backing up geisha now and haven't needed VOBBlanker at all. Try the newly updated DVDfab Express in conjunction with shrink, then Nero or dvddecrypter to burn. BTW, when I first tried backing this movie up, I had the old version of DVDfab and it gave me a HUGE file that shrink had probs compressing. But if I use the newer version, the file it spits out after analysing is just about as big as King Kong with the menus and stuff and that wasn't a prob. Weird. But DVDFab (new version) + shrink + whatever burning engine=backup, without needing VOB. Any ideas on why?

Your method didn't work for me, and I even tried 3 different dvd drives, thinking it might be that. Yes, I donloaded the newest version of DVDFAB, I have spent a total of 11 hours in 4 days trying to burn this piece of???????

Did you try doing what arniebear did? (realize you've been at this for a while). What about getting rid of the file you have now and doing it over again? Know what your feeling though. What exactly are you doing? Decrypting with fab and then re-authoring? Are you doing the entire movie with the bells and whistles or just the movie?

Just the movie, nothing else. I even tried getting two different DVD's of Geisha, thinking it was the actual disc. I put it thru DVDfab 7 times, deleting the previous file each time..then going into shrink. wouldn't re author, wouldn't analize(up to 15%( wouldn't do jack) I swear if I have this problem with Narnia tomorrow, I am going to rip out my hair.

Do you know someone that has? That way you could borrow it and do whatever instead of tearing your hair out.

I wish I did. Everyone I know seems to have the same problem as I do. I used to have a good friend who was a tech but he moved. It really wouldn't have made much difference because he had the same programs I have: shrink, Nero, dvdfab, clone2, AnyDVD. I tried them all.

It doesn't make sense. Have you had any other problems backing up movies of about the same size?

No I don't think thats it, theres too many other people having the same problem. Besides I only used AnyDVD with DVDfab, then I used shrink. So its not that. Either I am vastly missing somrthing or sony put some new thing on this dvd.

I think AnyDVD is the key.
The entire movie with the exception of the last two scenes was missing using DVDecrypter 3541 with AnyDVD 5721.
DVDdecryptor 3541 with AnyDVD 5941 in the background copied all the files onto the hard drive. Then DVD Shrink 3175 had no problem.

Again, as usual, "DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker" can get the job done flawlessly. I could simply put another "mini guide" of mine for "Memoirs of a Geisha & Chicken Little", but I don't have all of the free times (as much as I used to). However, for those that has been using DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker, you should at least figured it out by now.
On the other hand, I strongly deemed that with DVDFAB Decrypter (the latest) alone can easily rip the baby as well.
Best of lucks to all and happy burning!

Do not use AnyDVD with DVDFab, use one or the other.

alkohol:
When you say DVD Fab Decrypter handled it, are you talking about the Express (free) version or the full paid version? I ripped the files with Express, and when I now try to open it in Shrink I get this message:
I've then run it through VOB Blanker but got similar results.
I can try to rip it again once I'm back at home and have access to the original disc, but at the moment I'm travelling and have it only on my laptop.
The error Shrink is giving me seems fundamentally different from the "can't compress" error others are getting.
If someone's had success with VOB Blanker on it, can they post what titles and cells they blanked out?
Thanks!

I am glad that I haven't had this problem. All i did was have (1) AnyDVD running in the background as I normally do and opened (2)DVD Shrink 3.2. I then (3)loaded the disc in my dvd drive. (4)Waited for it to be recognized and (5)then clicked D:drive which had Geisha in it. (6)A menu of files open up and I double clicked just the movie (no menu, options, features etc JUST THE MOVIE). (7)The movie cycled through the preview screen and everything came out OK. (8)The ISO file was created and then (9)I used DVD Decrypter "Mode-Write To Disc". VIOLA!

I used new dvd fab download last night with AnyDVD running in background. I even have an old version of AnyDVD. The new fab download did the trick. I even backed up the menu's.
