I have not had any problems backing up Geisha, Chicken Little, Capote or anything with the latest protection. Clone DVD2 with Any DVD is the simple solution!

DVDFabDecrypter version 2.9.6.8 did NOT work. When going thru Shrink, I found out that only a portion of the movie got ripped onto the HD,so I unistalled DVDFab and installed version 2.9.7.2 instead (someone earlier mentioned that 2.9.7.3 does not work with this movie). Works like a charm now (2.9.7.2). I'm only backing up the movie (compression is 72.8%)without any extras with Shrink and burning with DVD Decrypter.

As Alkohol has mentioned in other threads, AnyDVD and DVD43 MUST BE TURNED OFF.

Good luck.

I think its funny when you gusy try so hard with this program and it dosnt work, when i used 2 programs with out all your steps or anything else, and i have never had problems with these programs..

Anydvd + Clone worked all the way, if you have problems with AnyDVD virus thing reinstall or get a new dl, turn off automatic updates..

AnyDvd ver.5.9.4.1
Clonedvd ver.2.8.9.2

this is the only 2 programs i use now to burn a backup of my movies now...

@ ArthurA

Call me cheap, but I do not want to pay for AnyDVD nor any other software programs. Heck I'm spending bundles just on the movies itself. The challenge for me and for others is to back up our movies by using "freebie" software. We know the easy way out is AnyDVD. Peace man.

ArthurA has nailed it. I may have a "Newbie" title but I have backed up over 800 movies & rather than struggle for hours & even days like some of you are doing, you must have the right tools to do the job right. At First, I too used all the freebie tools available but they soon became outdated. Kicking out a few bucks to get the RIGHT software is the way to go along with QUALITY media. Clone DVD2 & Any DVD will crue you of all your headaches. I also have to scratch my head at those using 3 & 4 programs to back up a single movie. If you forked out the cash for a decent PC & your spending money renting all the new releases, why not shell out a few more bucks for some software that's simple, effective & is constantly being updated?

CloneDVD2 is a fickle program that does not always work for me and is a last resort program, I prefer Nero. None of the programs used are 100% all of the time and none work with everything that's why most people here have many decrypting & ripping programs to source from and also the reason that many are frequently update to new software versions. I think, "Work Around" understanding I may need to bounce from program to program searching for a quick solution.

I am not drawn to any 5 to 10 step option to back up a given flick. It ain't worth that to me. I own the original. DVD Decrypter, DVDFAB, SHRINK, DVD43, AnyDVD, Nero, CloneDVD2 and VOB Blanker are all the programs I have resourced to successfully back-up movies to file or disc. With much success using these 3 AnyDVD+SHRINK+NERO normally when these do not work I option for VOB Blanker or CloneDVD2.

I can't say this enough invest in fast PC 3.2 to 3.4 processor speed as these programs can demand proformance. To not do this, you will suffer and complain here or elsewhere about the failures you have encountered attempting to back movies up to your hard drives or media disc. You can get the job done on a slower PC but be patient. Invest in large to huge hard drive internal or external. Max out you RAM or memory 256 a bare minimum and good luck. No cheap media. Freezing with pixelation? Choose MEMOREX,TDK, or FUJI,and most in store brands.

Notice they make you no promise to quality. Do not be surprised at the flawed results found when using these types media. Though they may be capable of a good burn here or there. Their inconsistentcies out wiegh the positives. Don't forget people It's just a hobby (I hope). Indulgence for pay can and will be addictive and your rehab may be a cold lonely cell.:P

@ cujo007

I'll agree with the right tools sentiment and a better more capable pc and quality media, but even if people using freebie software that is slightly out of date and are spending days trying to figure out the ins and outs of making a back-up of a movie, but thats the challange. If everyone forked out $$$$ for a program that does the same thing a freebie does, where would the challange and the thrill that you experience after you've gotten a movie that won't backup for love or money to finally backup be? But then again, for everyone CloneDVD and other retail progs don't work and other options need to be found. Don't be disparaging of the freebie software, some of it just helped you backup those 800 movies your so proud of. Besides, what happens when your RIGHT software can't do the job? But this is a hobby and a potentially fun one. Happy burning.

I used AnyDVD 5.9.4.1 and the latest clonedvd2. Disc burned fine but watching the backup copy, at 1:46:10 of the movie, things get really screwed up until 2:00:00 of the movie. I wrote to a DVD +R DL disc so I didn't need to use Shrink. I've also notified Slysoft as well.

Any other suggestions as to what might have happened. I'm supposedly using top quality DL discs.

Do you have a copy of the best media on the market? 1. did you upgrade your firmware on your burner. Also I like to burn at 4X's or slower. I think you can also slow down the read speed on your DVD rom, or burner, that might help. I found a list of the best media to use on afterdawn about 8 months ago. I have a Plextor Burner. I went to their website and it gave the best media to use, and all the other media that would work. danmax

@shibadude - what happens when you watch that section of movie from the files on the hard drive ? ie is it the rip of the movie that's at fault or (more likely) the burn went screwy somewhere. plus what did you use to burn with ? as Nero doesn't really handle the layer break well at all (it certainly doesn't in 6.x, not sure if it's any better in 7.x)

Thanks for the response danmax and creaky. I will check the items you have mentioned and respond back. I used CloneDVD2 to burn the disc and my drive usually is operating at 8X speed. I checked at one point on a drive update but there is none available. This is the only movie of about 200 burns I've made that has given me this problem.

You mean there is something other than "freebie" software?

This one does SUCK, I have not had any problems using One Click DVD with DVD43 in the background until Geisha.
I think the obvious solution is to avoid buying Sony DVD's, ARRGHH day to you mates!

So anyway, was not making any progress on copying Geisha.
I have the files on HD and they appear identical to what was on the original only when I attempt to view them the movie hangs by going to that chaper 1-1, the original dvd goes to menu after 12-1.
The movie wasn't all that good so I have no idea why I want to make a copy, some sort of strange compulsion is driving me, maybe because Sony pissed me off leaving me with a few 900mb coasters.
The only thing I have seen even close to this was also a Sony DVD where they inserted a bad file on the disk to cause a sector read error.
That fix was simple, copy to HD then find and delete the unreadable file and copy back to DVD.

So, does anyone know if I can manipulate the files on my HD to make this thing work?

Can't seem to view these VOB's individually to see the content, which is something I have never seen before, every file I attempt to view just leads back to the original splash screen.

These software programs seem to all require the original dvd to work from

I finally got a good backup of this disc. Used AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 without problems. I used a DL disc and a 4X burn speed. I've noticed with Ritek DL discs that the burn speed is only 2.4. For those of you having burn problems you might want to check the burn speed for the discs you are using. The slower speed of 4X worked for me even though my drive has an 8X speed.

This past week I must say I have been lucky, as I said before I dont compress, did kong with the old dvdxcopy from 321, didnt even need AnyDVD to do it, capote did not take with dvdxcopy, but worked perfect with my dvdxplat and AnyDVD, and geisha again worked perfect with dvdxcopy, and all this done with none of those difficult complicated methods like Nero etc. just one click and go, its been a good week, they dont always come easy this way so I count my blessings.
