Hello,

I like using DVD Shrink, but there is just one little problem that I have had with it. It does not allow you to put more than one item in the "backup" menu; it only allows you to "backup" one item at a time. ..... This is a problem because I want to put 2 90-minute movies onto a blank disk. Theoretically this would not be a problem, if it were not for the fact that DVD Shrink does not allow you to burn onto a disk that already has some stuff on it. ....... If I can put more than one selection into the "backup" menu before I click "backup", this will allow me to burn from one movie to another without having to start over with a different blank disk.

So, this is why I am here to ask a question.

My question is, does anyone know of a program similar to DVD Shrink that will do all the things that DVD Shrink does, but has the added benefit of allowing me to put more than one movie, in one burning session, onto a disk?

If anyone can help me with this, please e-mail me at johnsmith2022 at yahoo dot com ...... Thank you.

John Smith

Hi johnsmi,

welcome and before we start lets edit out your email address as it is against the forum rules and attracts spambots.

Now you can backup more than 1 movie using dvdshrink just keep in mind the more you fit onto a dvd the more chance of a loss of quality.

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm here is a link on how to use DVD Shrink and see the 1st link in my signature as well. Post back and let us know how its going with your project.

Hi Matt.... Thanks for responding. But, I do have DVD Shrink (3.2), and I have been using it for quite some time. ... The problem is that the MENU selection only allows you to put ONE movie in the burn playlist to be burned. It does not allow us to have multiple selections to be burned in one session. .... So again I ask, is there a DVD Shrink type of program that WILL allow multiple selections? ..... Thanks . John

Ok are you using re-author mode where you can add to the compilation as there you can add files and set your target output to 4.3gigs. Also in the re-author mode you will not have a working menu, that will be for another program to do.

Hi again Matt .... So, are you saying that if I use that re-author mode, it will allow me to hold down the "control" button and select 2 movies for the burn menu? ...... Thanks . John

Hi,

You will need to add the 2 files from the right panel to the left panel. In re-author mode you will have to select the 2 files 1 at a time. Once you have them in the right pane drag them to the left and that will give you two files that can be put on 1 dvd. Depending on the size of the dvd compliant files and the amount of compression needed will dictate the amount of quality loss if your combined files are over 8gigs or more. Anything under that will result in moderate quality loss but will be somewhat noticeable if you are trying to watch the dvd on a large screen.

When referring to burn are you using nero or dvd decrypter to burn automatically?

Ok out of curiosity I tried this and the compression was 49% with 2 movies, original size of each was 6.2gigs without compression.

Hi Matt,

I am using DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD's, and DVD Shrink (3.2) to burn them. ..... The very first ever DVD burning that I did using DVD Shrink was with a 3-hour movie, and it came out nicely. So, I figured that doing 2 90-minute movies would be basically the same thing.

I'll take your advice and go ahead with this processs to see what happens, then I'll get back to you with the results.

In the meanwhile, can you tell me if there are any newer versions of DVD Shrink, and where to get them (for free)? ... Also, are there any other programs that you know of that work like DVD Shrink?

Hope to hear from you. Thanks again ... John

Hi,

First the last versions of DVD Shrink is v3.2 and DVD Decrypter is 3.5.4. A few other programs that work along the lines of shrink are: Nero recode, clonedvd2 (excellent program along with AnyDVD...both have a 21 day trial). There is also dvdrb that works well with cinema craft encoder probably the best but a bit more advanced until you get the hang of it. Many others profess to do what shrink does but to be honest I don't experiment unless I can read about them or some of the more experienced people here recommend it. Ulead movie factory supposedly is a nice piece of software to add multiple movies with your own menus but I have no experience with that software. All of the above mentioned programs have trial periods and you should test for yourself to see if you wish to purchase them. Personally I would like to suggest using AnyDVD w/ clonedvd2 as their updates are free for lifetime.

One more thing be sure to check outfilepedia (affiliated with Afterdawn) as they always have the latest programs. Link is at the bottom of the page.

Hi Matt, I took your advice and did the drag-and-drop idea with the re-authorizing in DVD Shrink so that I could put two movies on one disk. It started out fine, but 15 minutes into it, my computer re-started.

Hoping that it was just a fluke, I tried it again, but again my computer re-started. ...

Is there some legitimate reason why my computer would re-start when I use this method? Or could it be that my 2-year-old computer just can't handle the work needed to do this?

Hope to hear from you, Matt. ... Thanks .... John

Could be that your computer is overheating, if you are running a desk PC open the case and have a fan blow on it, or if a laptop get one of the fan cooling pads. To test if it is this try after about 10 minutes pausing your encoding for 5 minutes and let the CPU cool down and then continue, see if goes beyond 15 minutes.

Hi Arnie, actually the fan is working fine. When I use DVD Shrink the normal way, everything works fine. It's only when I use DVD Shrink the other way that my computer re-starts. But I appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

So Matt, if you see the previous post by me, please respond if you might know anything about this.

Thanks ... John
