@cincy - phew! I am not into pissing people off unless I am really trying too!! lol

@RIAA - Huge middle finger!!!!!!!!! My husband & I are musicians, he is a pro, I am not. Anyhow...his only hope of making money is to start an indy label. Every other deal out there, including most indys is that the artist gets crap out of it when you look at the percentages. Even the big ones only make small percentages thanks to people like RIAA. MORE MIDDLE FINGERS!!!!!!!!!!!

All Purpose Curse for the RIAA:
RIAA may your collective karma come and gift itself to you as soon as possible.

Au_.exe a wonderful trojan...My system is JACKED...No more firewall...No more Anti-virus...removed the file...still can not reinstall my Anti-virus...

That will not always work because too clean some of the nastier malware or viruses System Restore needs to be disabled. Once your machine gets too screwed up it's just as easy to re-format and start clean.

Linux has a lot more to offer than just Internet access. Security is much better on Linux when set-up properly. A dual boot system is the way to go and very easy to set-up.

Most viruses are smart enough to keep in the system even when you do a system restore. But, as ddp said, you should be able to get rid of the virus after you do a system restore.

I personally recommend Symantec Antivirus (not the Norton garbage, but Symantec.) Although I don't use it due to my gaming.

I use ClamWin as its on my flash drive that I plug in once a day to check for virus updates then I run a full AV scan once a week (or every other depending on how much I download). It doesn't install anything to the hard drives except some temp files that are deleted as soon as its done.

ClamWin is also free and can be installed to your hard drive if you wish. It (as far as I know) doesn't have a "Real Time" scan engine but I like it as its good, free Antivirus. You can download it here.

Thanks to Ireland for finding this wonderful application. :)

If you would like here is a antivirus test conducted 14 September 2005 with a big majority of the more popular antivirus programs out there. I know its a bit old but I think it still gives a good idea of how AV programs perform.

Here are a few that are on the list:
McAfee
Kaspersky
PC-cillin
Norton
ClamWin

Yes, they are part of the same company but Symantec (the non-Norton variety) is a far better AV. It uses hardly any resources (about the same as Kaspersky) and, from what I have seen, has a great detection rate.

Here are the minimum system requirements for Symantec (Corporate Edition) which is what I used to use before I discovered ClamAV Portable:

Symantec AntiVirus Client 32-bit

* Windows 2000 Professional; Windows XP Home/Professional/Tablet PC;
* 128 MB RAM
* 55 MB disk space
* Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or later

Norton's Requirements:
* 300MHz or higher processor
* 256MB of RAM
* 180MB of available hard disk space

Just for kicks here is Kaspersky's Requirements followed by PC-Cillin

Kaspersky:
* Intel Pentium 300 MHz or higher
* 128 MB RAM
* 50 MB available HDD space

PC-Cillin:
* Windows XP Pro or Home with Service Pack 1 or 2 (32 bit)
* Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 or 2005 (32 bit)
* Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2004 or 2005 (32 bit)
* Intel? Pentium? 350Hz, or equivalent processor
* 256MB of RAM
* 250MB hard disk space

Based on the system requirements alone I would go with Kaspersky. Combined with its high detection rate it would, in my opinion make it King of the Antivirus Hill.

You can get a fully working trial of Kaspersky (if your current AV isn't doing a good job ;p) (30-days) here.

xbobdvl is in rare form today LOL! I was surprised when I first saw Anna Nicole Smith because she seemed like an anachronism ... like she belonged from the more robust bleach-blond days of Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield.
