Having a little issue with DVD Shrink that just started a week or so ago. I am using the newest DVD Shrink and Nero 6.3.1.18 currently on my computer. It seems that everytime i start DVD Shrink the computer starts to lag. The mouse cant really be moved and i have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the task manager to slowly come up and i see that DVD Shrink 3.2 is using 99% CPU.

The only think i can think of new that i have added to my computer is a video card. I added a GeForce 6200 and the new nvidia drivers. Not sure if this would cause conflict but have not been able to find any information from anyone else with this problem.

I have also tried completely uninstally DVD Shrink and Nero and reinstalling but it still consumes most of the cpu when DVD Shrink is run.

If anyone happens to have seen this problem before and knows a fix for it, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Shrink is a resource hog and will use all of your processor power, no matter what the size of the processor. If you have Nero use the Recode program in it. Recode is faster and less CPU intensive. It is by the same developer as Shrink, and the backup movie looks just as good.

That sounds really wierd.

I have 5 machines, 2 laptops, one is 1.8 ghz with 512 meg ram centrino, the other is P4 1.8 ghz 512 meg ram, and 3 desktops, 1 P4 1.8 ghz 768 meg ram, 1 P4 2.8ghz 1024 gig ram, and 1 AMD 3600 Athlon with 2 gig ram. I can burn with shrink with all of them and do other things such as word processing, email, scanning, printing, photoediting and still not max out my processor. I don't seem to run into any lag issues with the mouse or window paint when switching between programs.

Resource hog yes, but not to the extent of 99%. Sounds like you need to msconfig and check out your background processes and/or resources. You may be running other things you don't need and aren't aware of.

What are the system specs that your computer has? Ram, Processor, etc.

Which operating system are you using?

DVD RW Drive?

Make sure that you are not multi tasking while shrink is running. Do nothing else and turn off screen savers etc.

I used to be able to use DVD Shrink and Nero with no problems. I have made backups of quite a few of my movies for down at my boat and they all worked perfectly. It has just been the past couple weeks when the cpu usage seems to be through the roof. The first screen of DVD Shrink doesnt even come up. it is right after i double click it on the desktop that computer goes into super laggy mode. The only way i can get the lag to disappear is ctrl-alt-delete wait about 10 seconds for the task manager to show up, move the mouse, wait 5 seconds for cursor to move and turn off DVD Shrink that way. Like i said. DVD Shrink never actually gets fully started so it isn't like it is using the cpu during the analyzing or encoding step. It uses the cpu the second i double click the icon.

Some of the specs for my system:
AMD 3400
1 gig 2700 ram
GeForce 6200
DVD DRU-500A

The onyl thing that is new on it is the video card. Is it possible that this may be causing a conflict? How do i go about checking to find out if that is the cause?

Seems like you've got a pretty descent vid card. What is the mem cache on that, what amount of ram is being set aside in the bios for this card? If you don't need super gamer video from it, I'd pipe it down a bit.

It's easy enough to check, just uninstall the nvidia drivers using the windows add/remove programs function, reboot, ignore the found new hardware wizzard (just close it), try using shrink.

DVD Shrink uses around 90-100 of my CPU when I decode a movie.
Doesn't prevent me from surfing the web or anything.
I'm not worried about it.

Well John...thank you for telling me to do what i shoulda done in th first place. I went ahead and uninstalled all my nvidia drivers and DVD Shrink started working like a charm. So then i reinstalled the newest drivers from nvidia.com which i think was the forceware 84.21 driver and rebooted and DVD Shrink was still working just fine. I didnt pay attention to what nvidia drivers i was using before hand but obivously something in them was conflicting with dvd-shrink. thank you all for the help. i really really appreciate.

i've very often had 2 or 3 movies ripping from DVD Shrink at the same time on my AMD Athlon 2800+XP with 1GB of ram. it's only burning where i'm ever careful to leave PC alone..

Why not? if you have more than one drive, all you have to do is set which drive you want to select your movie from. If you are using AnyDVD as your protection removal, you can set up as many drives as your board can handle.
