Could this be the crappy media? Also, my DVD burner is a Sony DVD-RW DRU-820A. I've downloaded the latest firmware. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I am looking through the rest of the log. The first thing though, your memory is very, very low, don't have even the minimum recommended for burning DVDs(500MB):
Quote:
Physical memory : 127MB (130352kB)
Free physical memory: 17MB (18116kB)
127MB is enough for your OS to run.

You have Roxio installed in your computer. Some people repeorted conflict between Nero and Roxio. You can download Roxio Zapper and remove Roxio.
The media you are using is not the best, but not the worse either. You could try different ones, but without enough memory, the best discs in the world will not help.

Once you get more RAM memory and try burning again, turn this option off:

DVD high compatibility mode: Yes
Here you can get Roxio Zapper:

I would also suggest getting a different brand of media. BUt that's really just my opinion, I don't like Ritek.

But you really need to get some more ram, that 128 is nowhere near enough for DVD burning.

Thanks for the replies. I'm laughing at myself because I recently upgraded to XP and I had to take out my add-on memory because it was causing a conflict and my XP wouldn't install. Appreciate the tips - I'll throw in more memory and try this again as well as getting rid of Roxio.

Just tip of caution: you might want to remove serial number, it begins with 1A

Good job AddisonII !! Do this before your serial is stolen

As far as the problems go....

Means the burner is not recognizing the media,
I would recommend updating your firmware.
But with only 17 megs of memory free,
I dont think your be able to complete until you
add another stick of memory.

I had already updated my firmware so I'm guessing it is the memory or the media . . . or more likely both!!!

Alright guys (and gals) I'm back and can't say I'm much farther along. Got my memory in and am using Nero 7 Ultra Edition. I get the Nero Burn ROM going and the burn begins but then fails and says write error and the next line says illegal disc. I switched my media to Verbatim. Is it still the media that the drive doesn't like? The following is the log:

Below are the errors w/ Nero 7

This is a write error by the Nero code ( 1135)

D: CdRom0: SCSIStatus(x02) WinError(0) NeroError(-1046)

This error is an illegal disk (1046)

This info from the Sony site: Approved Media

DVD+R

Sony Corporation -Disc labeled for use at 8x and 16x speed
Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. -Disc labeled for use at 8x speed
Verbatim/Mitsubishi Chemical Co., Ltd.- Disc labeled for use at 8x speed
Hitachi Maxell, Ltd -Disc labeled for use at 4x speed

Richo Co.,Ltd.-Disc labeled for use at 4x and 8x speed

What that is telling me you need to use the 8X (+)Verbatim disks as they have not written firmware for the 16X. This is why you are getting those error codes. I have no idea where you will find any 8X Verbatim as most of what I have seen is 16X

Now if you can find the 16x (-) Verbatim they are OK to use

Here is the site: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/820mediainfo_gb_na060227.htm

Car.Mike:
Thanks for the reply. I can't believe how picky it is with media. Is that because the drive is a fairly new version of Sony you think? Guess I'm off to track down some other media. . . sigh.

I really do appreciate your help in sifting through the info and pointing me in the right direction towards a solution. AD rocks!

tito911 ,
Make sure that you look at the Sony site and print out the info you will need. I also would have thought if 16X(-) was OK then 16X(+) would also be OK.
Your best bet since the speeds of the (+) media is low is to look for Sony blank media or go w/ the (-) blank media

Car.Mike,
Thanks again for your help. I will post back after I attempt with different media I pick up later today. Keep your fingers crossed!

I saw back a couple posts that you showed a Nero error - is that related to the media as well or is that a separate issue in Nero that I need to investigate?

It might not be your case, but it won't hurt either. I had a couple of burns fail when I used that feature.
Also, save the project to HDD drive first and then open NBR and do the burn manually. The only time my burns failed it was when I had the DVD high compatibility on and when autoburning Shrink/Nero.

Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!

Thanks for the responses everyone. I have the movie saved to my hard drive and am burning it manually with Nero. It isn't just this movie either. I've tried Domino, Fight Club (which I got read failure errors with), A Sound of Thunder. They all fail. Anybody think it could be the actual drive? Only 2 weeks old. . . Any other ideas? Try another type of media perhaps?

tito911,
The laser could be off on the burner. Heck it could be anything. If it is 2 wks old the burner has to be under warranty but that is supposition

Wow, was that a hassle. Well, I finally got the issue resolved. It was the sony burner that was a dud. Took it back and then got a benQ. Dropped it in, put in a DVD with AnyDVD and copied with no trouble using CloveDVD. Amazing. It seemed almost too easy after going through the mess with the other burner. Anyway, just wanted to close out the thread and give a big thanks to all those that dropped in and gave some help. Happy burning all!!!
