Welcome to the forum. If the training movie is not encrypted then Shrink should do the job for you. A guide is below as it has Pics for you to follow. A DVD-9 is a Dual Layer DVD. The DVD-9 dvd's in the U.S. are about $2.00 a piece so I would advise you to try and compress it to a simgle layer DVD

Thank you for the response! Does this software DVD Shrink, have any spyware etc, associated with it?

Thank you again,

None whatsoever. Shrink is one of the must trusted and used programs on this site.

Since downloading it, I don't think it's a stretch to say I've used it everyday (and multiple times per day, at that).

Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

Nope: It hasn't even been updated in over a year and a half.

When I do my backups, I turn off the internet.

Dvd shrink and DVD Decrypter are excellent programs, even if they are no longer updated.

I did a bunch of Marine Training films the other week. They were only on dvd-5's.

lindadobe,
If it is the encryption then Shrink might not be able to read the disk. You can then use AnyDVD ( driver based decrypter) along w/ Shrink or use DVDFAB Decrypter and rip the DVD to HD and then use Shrink. You can burn the compilation that you do to either a (-) DVD or to a (+) DVD or what ever your burner does

If it's on a dvd -r (dash),then there should be no encryption on it. It's already a backup disc. Look on the bottom of the disc for purple on r or dark gray color for rw. Original dvds will have a shiny/silvery color on the bottom. Those originals are Pressed in,so no burns.

I used anydvd. It'll tell you if it has encryption:

Summary for drive E: (AnyDVD 5.9.5.3)
Drive (Hardware) Region: 1

Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 1
Total size: 1783728 sectors (3483 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: MONSTER_IN_LAW
Media is not CSS protected.
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1 2 3 4 5 6!

RCE protection not found.
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Structural copy protection not found.
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Bad sector protection not found.
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!

Mine tells me:
It's region free
Set as a dvd-rom,because I booktype them.
No encryption

Now if that training film is an actual dvd backup, then it may be a totally different ball game. When it comes to re-ripping other peeps backups, compatability can be an issue.

Your HP 740c must be able to recognize that backup in order to rip it,or it'll give you a no disc/no data error. The specs say it'll burn both, along with Dl media. Reading other burners backups may give it issues.

Several possibilities may occur if you can't rip it:

Burned too fast
Burned too slow
Used low quality media
Burn program
It may have a sticker label on it.
Crappy burner may have made it
Etc:
Backups with a lot of errors/or in the wrong spot can be tricky!

The main thing: You want to get those files to your harddrive. Major item is trying to get those files to your harddrive without a crc error.

Plus or Dash? I use either in my Benqs. The plus works better because I booktype them to dvd-rom to make them more compatable on other drives.

My HP 640C performed better with the dash format, and has no booktyping capability that I am aware of. It is a pc of crap when it comes to burning backups, but ok for reading and lightscribing.

I'd get some quality dash media for HP writers.Maxell/sony/fuji-but make sure they say made in Japan on the wrappers.Verbatim and Taiyo yuden are some of the best.

Try downloading dvd shrink/insert training flick/open disc/let it analyze-usually a couple mins for that quick analyzation.

Look on the compression tab: If is says 100,then it's a dvd-5. Anything lower than that,It'll be a dvd-9. 100 means no compression. No compression, then you can use dvd decrypter in Mode ISO read and Mode ISO write. You won't even need dvd shrink for that one.

lindadobe,
What is the size of the original DVD. If you insert it in your DVD drive and then go to My computer> C:> DVD Burner and hover the cursor over it it will tell you the size

lindadobe,
You can Shrink it twice to get it to fit. If you want good quality I would suggest you put it on a D/L disk. Does your burner do D/L disks. I would suggest DVD-RB but I think the d/l dvd is the way for you to go

lindadobe,
I suggest you burn at 2.4. If the disks are not encrypted then use DVDDecrypter;

DVDDecrypter setup
1. Go to Mode
2. .iso> read
3. DVDDecrypter should save the file to C; Drive usually in the name of the movie but just remember where it is saved
4. Click on the decrypt button and wait for it to finish

5. After read make sure the file is on the C: Drive. You should see 2 files. One will be a image file and the other will be a .mds file

6. Under source locate the files on the C:Drive and click on the .mds file
7. On the lower right side select the speed you want to write at. I suggest 2.4
8. In DVDDecrypter go to Mode
9. .iso > Write
10. Hit the decrypt( write ) button and wait

Thank you. DVD Shrink copied that particular DVD by itself with a DVD DL double layer. Copied great. Now I am back to my german training dvd. This one, when I play it on my computer it plays and shows the menu items in english, and has english audio, but when I encode it and burn it...it seems to be in German. It is encoding now so I will find out later if it will burn ok etc. In the DVD Shrink preview it looks to be all in German though. (the menus etc). How do I get this thing to copy in English which I know is on there because it plays on my machine in English just fine????

I see the english menus on there now...ill let you know how it copies tomorrow. Thank you for your help!!!!

The DVD copied fine to a DVD DL... The problem now is on my computer it plays fine. On my TV DVD player it is in black and white and it scrolls. Is this a problem with DVD Shrink? Is it something DVD Shrink can fix? I have burned the other video using a DL DVD and this was not a problem>? Please help, these DLs are expensive!

lindadobe,
What brand of d/l blank media did you use?. Try the DVD in a friends DVD Player and see if this happens there. It could be a compatibility problem between the DVD and the player

On the German Training File. When you did the DVD did you include all of the audio or did you just edit out the audio you did not want. When playing the original is the main language that comes up will it plays German?

Hi,

Even the original I can play in the laptop but not on the home dvd player. I was hoping a copy would allow me to watch this dvd on my TV and not have to view it with my laptop. Could this be a region issue? If so, can DVD Shrink fix this somehow?

When you ripped the DVD to HD is should have removed it and made it region-free

hmmm...ok...then I am really confused. It plays perfectly in my laptop but not on my Panasonic home dvd player. It plays in black and white and it scrolls. What might that be? Its only my German DVD...none of the others?

Can DVD Shrink fix this issue?

lindadobe,
Is the name brand on the disks Verbatim or is it something else. All of the other D/L blank Media are inferior to Verbatim and they will cause you problems.

If you did an exact copy of the training DVD then all of the language should be there. Then you can choose the audio language w/ the DVD Player.

Did you burn it exactly like my instructions stated or did you change it.

Shouldn't need shrink for DL backups. Rip with DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read to HD/Mode ISO write/ Locate MDS file/and burn away.

Is that training flick in PAL or NTSC format?

Here in USA, we use NTSC format. Britain uses PAL and NTSC/and I believe the rest of Europe uses PAL. That would give you the black/white picture. If so,you'll probably have to transfer it to NTSC?

lindadobe: What region are you at?

arrggghhh...how do i tell if it is PAL? I called someone else that also bought the DVD. they said this "I had to convert it to avi then reencode to
NTSC MPEG2"

What would I need to do that?
Where do I look to see if its PAL?

CarMike, I did not dl the other program since the horse DVD copied fine just through DVD shrink.

Will the whole movie be on my computer hard drive before it goes to burn?
