I have licenses for AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 already so both are up to date but I heard some people saying that DVD Shrink is the best cloning software for picture quality. Better than CloneDVD2. This is because DVD Shrink has those Picture Quality setting options you can select when you backup a DVD to analyze the DVD first and clone for sharpness / smoothness. Yes it takes 1.5 hours to clone a DVD if you do this but having said that, it's suppose to be the best quality on the market. Better than anything CloneDVD2 can do. Is this true ? Do people see a real difference when they use these options ?

hey sammy. i have clonedvd2, it is a great program, better than shrink in almost every aspect but in one, when it comes to large amount of compression, shrink's picture quality is better than clonedvd2. that's is my opinion anyway.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

The absolute best program for picture quality is DVD-Rebuilder when used with a high quality encoder (CCE, Procoder, HC, etc.) The downfall is the time it takes, with my system (see below) I'm getting about 2.5 hours per full movie encode when using CCE at 3 passes, but the results are second-to-none.

And just to answer, yes, depending on compression required, I would definitely see a difference when using Shrink's Picture quality settings, if this is your program of choice, then these settings are definitely worth using.

Unfortunatly, the quality of all the output from the programs used far exceeds the quality of most movies nowadays.....:-)

What about cloning a DVD with DVD Shrink without either one of those Picture Quality settings selected VS CloneDVD2 ? The amount of time to clone is around the same and I think the picture looks pretty good on either way. Would you guys say the picture quality on those two scenarios are the same or is DVD Shrink still a bit better without the picture quality settings, the same, or not as good as CloneDVD2 ?

A friend of mine did a copy of King Kong with clone2 and he said it came out funky. Kong apparently looked greenish and parts flashed green during certain scenes, but no such problems with Shrink. Is it old, yeah. Is it slower, yeah. It is still very good though, and maybe better under certain circumstances.

My copy of King Kong, movie only, compressed and burned with CloneDVD on TY DVD-RX8 at 4X, had no problems whatsoever and appeared, to me, to be of excellent qality when viewed on my 32" TV.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder and depends upon many thing of which the program used is only one.....

When you all speak of Shrink, does it also mean Nero Recode 2 ?

Since it's made by the same people ?

I really don't know what caused it, but there it is. The quality seemed just fine apparently, the ape just looked green in certain scenes. Maybe it's not clone2, I don't use it, but the guy definitely knows how to make a good DVD, so I give the benefit of the doubt.

That's interesting. Yeah I guess it depends on a lot of factors. On everything in settings and stuff in a person's WindowXP, and DVD player too. My friend Cloned King Kong with CloneDVD2, all the titles, menus, audios, and it looks good. I think it also depends on which DVD player I use too with my clones. I notice my Insignia dvd player, even at crazy compression like 45 - 50% still looks very good but that same dvd on my friend's Nova DVD player, it looks good but when the action gets fast on the screen, the pixels come up whereas on mine still looks good. Then get a clone dVD with little compression and looks good all the time on both DVD players. So I think some DVD players handle compression better than others. Well I've been wrong before but that's what I've noticed anyways. With all these programs an methods, it seems like Clone a DVD movie can be an art or a trade that takes time to get fairly good at hehe.

If you are after quality with comnpression over 10% or more,
I recommend using DVD Rebuilder.
With no compression or compression rates below 10%,
the difference wont be noticible,
The higher you go the more I would use DVD-RB instead.

For movie only copying with limited compression,
it really wouldnt make a difference either way.

Cheers!

I'm with you here. Some backups I just don't give a crap, and use Shrink. The rest go through RB.

Thanks guys. DVD Rebuilder is something I should look in to. bilbo65, I know what you mean but I'm still new to this so I want to listen to the experiences of others to better my techniques. Sounds like I should be using this DVD Rebuilder almost all the time. It's not very often at all that a dvd movies compression is less than 10%. It's usually 25 - 50% or down to 50 - 75% of the original size which ever way you want to say it. I hope Slysoft improves the picture quality abilities of CloneDVD2 since people are paying for the software (Usually) and they do update it. Last update was only Feb 28 which is what I got. I guess it's better to have several software packages to keep my options open though.

The picture is degraded more by transcoders, but it's usually more than watchable. Even Shrinking down a large movie looks better than VHS. Since I do own the originals as well, I'm a little more open to high compression that some may be. If I really like the film, it goes to rebuilder. Since 90% of the movies I buy are the ones I like, most of the time I'm using RB. The other 10% I buy solely for my daughter or wife, and most of those (like Bambi 2 or Yours, Mine and Ours) are going to get backed up with Shrink. Some odd few don't require either. Dick and Jane for instance required no compression after removing FS version with vobblanker.
